Re: Upgrade CPU

Thing is, the wider the temperature range, the more thermal stress on the electrical connections, and the shorter the useful life. That's why you don't want to hit scorching hot temperatures with a laptop, even if if seems like nothing happens in short term. That's something I love about my X301. Wi...

Re: Upgrade CPU

I have a W530 with a 3720QM. Temperatures are only reasonable if I disable Turbo and the discrete video card.

You'll be much better off with a 3540M. Performance is not that far and battery life and temperatures are much better. You can leave Turbo on, for example.

Re: GNU ThickPad

I think guys from Tex design who made classic inspired keyboard are the most competent. Nice stuff, but not very practical when it comes to a laptop. There has been a trend to try to miniaturize the key switches even more, but no successful design has appeared. Most new ones use the butterfly princ...

Re: T25 can take ANY T470 motherboard and 64GB RAM

But the 4-RAM slot models like P50, P70, P51, P71 are still limited to 64 GB RAM. Even if you use 32 GB sticks to physically install >64 GB RAM, the BIOS will only report 64 GB, and the OS may acknowledge the increased RAM but reports only 64 GB usable. Oh well. It's easy to read the EEPROM, do som...

Re: 2022 Thinkpads

According to this article (japanese) there is going to be a 30th Anniversary model. It's unlikely to be anything but a rehash of the T25; this is, a regular T series with a classic keyboard. This is cheap for Lenovo (small budget) and probably enough to please the nostalgic folks. (Found it on Reddi...

Which OS is your sister running ? Windows 10 Pro. The 420si came with Windows 7 Home, but I replaced the COA with a Windows 7 Pro. From 7 Pro to 10 Pro is a free upgrade and works every time. I have a T410s with no battery life (so it stays on mains), with a wobbly (and now cracking around the hing...

A gift to my sister: the last Classic Thinkpad

Hi folks. My sister still had my old X301 (1.4 GHz SU9400, 8GB RAM, 64GB SSD) from around 2013 in (sporadic) use. She learned to appreciate the cute little machine and became fond of the classic keyboard and Trackpoint thanks to me. But she complained some time ago that the machine was starting to r...

Re: Latest/ last Gen of CPUs Chipsets (Mobile, Desktop/ Workstation) from Intel AMD still support & can run Win 8.1?

the latest Intel-based ThinkPads that are officially tested and supported for use with Windows 7/8.1 by Lenovo are the Skylake-era laptops like the L460, T460, X260, X1 Gen4. Skylake may be old and underpowered by today standards, but it's so special because it's the only intel generation to suppor...

A word of warning about getting used X1C machines

Maybe people in the US hasn't noticed it yet, but there is a major drawback about purchasing old X1C series laptops if you intend to switch languages: it may end up being quite costly, since there isn't a single palmrest, but many (each is specific to a keyboard layout). They aren't easy to come by ...

Re: Time to replace T430s ?

Honestly, you're looking at the problem from the wrong angle. The World Wide Web is the largest scam Humanity has ever devised. Just think about it: most web sites provide a window for foreign code to be executed on visitor machines, essentially stealing your computing resources. Like 95-99% of all ...

Where did you get it? Have you actually tested to store 2TB on it?

I ask because, normally, the whole model number shown in the sticker also appears in the title of the application and here it doesn't. That's a red flag.

Maybe not 50mm thick but we surely need a (RISC V) GNU ThickPad.

It surely takes ages to dry up. I have a fuzzy memory about spilling liquid over something (don't remember what exactly) and checking it after two or three weeks it still had traces of it. Re: Choosing CPU Quad Core Mod or SSD for T500

I used to have a desktop (ATX) motherboard for Pentium M CPUs. I think it was 915GM based, with PCI Express ports, SATA and all. I do remember that I installed a 1.8 or 2.0 GHz version of the CPU, raised the FSB and got like 2.4 GHz out of it. Not sure if it required a small bump in voltage; it was ...

x41 was marginal for Windows 7 Anything that doesn't run 64 bit software is pretty much obsolete. 1) OCD? 2) They changed a lot of things with the island keyboard and not everything was positive. The obvious is, of course, they layout / reduced functionality but water resistance was also affected. As you've noticed, the new keyboard doesn't really have a tray like the old one so in certain areas...

Thank you for your answers. I begin to see a pattern here. 1) It has a high aesthetic component. People don't like to see how things work or are built (I begin to think that magical thinking is deeply ingrained into the collective unconscious... topic for another day). Sandy Bridge supports frequencies above 1333 MHz. I have absolutely no idea about Coreboot as I've only heard about it but never actually installed (...

Get a 3520M. All quad cores have a popensity to ovearheat. Besides, the per-core frequency is lower in a quad compared to a dual, so activities that are not heavily threaded (which is most of them) will be faster. Also take into account that memory bandwidth doesn't increase as the threads do, so mo...

Why manufacturers stopped using the "Classic" hinge design?

Maybe someone can explain it to me. I've always wondered why most manufacturers stopped using the "classic" hinge design (the one that sits vertically over the chassis and places the rotation axis of the lid in its middle point) and began using offseted or "modern" hinge design (generally constructe...

Re: Thinkpad T700 i7-10710 private project

Maybe OT, but did anybody with an X300/X301 ever try an Ultrabay SATA-mod similar to the T43/p drivebay? The SATA lines could be, in theory, redirected to one of the Mini PCIe slots, effectively adding mSATA support. Then both a secondary battery and a secondary hard drive could be used at the same...

I've had all machines we're talking about and, in my opinion, the X301 is the best (classic) Thinkpad ever. Sure, other models may beat it in specific ways, but none offers the balance of features the X301 has. Had Lenovo released it with a Sandy Bridge ULV processor instead of Core 2 Duo, and a bet...

The only quad core I have around of that era is a W530 and I struggled to keep temperatures down. The W530 IS designed to handle 45W + nVidia K1/2000M... in theory. In practice temperature rises super quickly and throttles or shuts down under anything intensive. The only way I can use my W530 normal...
