Re: modern laptops with "trackpoint"

I don't think anyone forced you to buy anything, unless someone was holding a gun to your head and made you buy a laptop. Its your own choice which device you buy and you chose to buy a worse device because of your own hatred. It is self-imposed suffering. I had to buy a worse device because of Len...

Re: modern laptops with "trackpoint"

I truly hope that your Dell experience works out better than mine did, but it's not sounding that promising. Cheers. It's predictably bad. But I wouldn't have been really happier with a Lenovo anyway. (Good for you if it improved your experience at work, that's certainly important. Though I suspect...

Re: modern laptops with "trackpoint"

So I've just taken hold of the Latitude 5400 which I had ordered a few days ago. Here are my fresh first impressions from unpacking it and running it for a dozen minutes. It comes with Win 10, which is annoying as heck. Microsoft is really forcing down a lot of things through your throat. Their desi...

Re: modern laptops with "trackpoint"

Okay, I've just ordered the Latitude 5400. I should receive it next week. It'll be my first Dell and I sure hope it won't suffer from the same coil whine as the XPS series :o Because of that potential issue, plus the subpar screen/keyboard/trackpoint, I took the middle range route. Had it been a Mod...

Re: modern laptops with "trackpoint"

Okay, I'm upping this thread as I'm close to biting the bullet and getting the Dell Latitude 7490 (the smaller 7390 would have suited me better, but there's no trackpoint option AFAIK). My X220 is messed up and the fan was dead for a few months before miraculously reviving tonight (but not after a "...

Unfortunately the detachable keyboard is terrrible.
But that's exactly the point ! Since it's detachable, you don't have to put up with this disgrace of a keyboard

Re: Just a story of reliability

My X220 is starting to fall apart. The plastics on the frame are of really bad quality compared to my T60. Thinkpads might be monsters, but Lenovopads sure ain't.

Today I tried all those steps again and it booted up one time, sent me to bios screen to set the date and time and then ran for a minute or two and shutdown again. I again tried the reset button, it booted up again and then shutdown after 15 seconds or so. I haven't been able to get it to boot back...

Re: New Zealand border cops warn travelers that without handing over electronic passwords 'You shall not pass!'

I agree that this is not unique to NZ. It's a trend that ALL government are doing. What's most disturbing for me is how easily the sheep, me included, have accepted less and less and less freedom and privacy every year. Shhh. It's for your own safety, citizen. Now keep your mouth shut and your head...

Well IIRC that "Core" OS is a light Windows, so quite obviously it's aimed at the so-called "smartwatches" ; which happen to sport circular screens.

Re: Toshiba sells its laptop business to Sharp

I actually think this is just part of a Japanese trend of declining sales and innovation - Not only Fujitsu, Toshiba and Sony but Sharp themselves haven't been doing that well either with their TVs. Or Panasonic and Pioneer TVs when was the last time you saw one of those? Or Sony's phones. A lot of...

Microsoft unveils 10-inch Surface Go for 399$

Now that it's cheap enough to warrant enduring a non-matte screen, I'll prolly get one. (The resolution is fine btw)

And then maybe a Dell once they release their 3:2 models, even though their XPS series is plagued with coil whine.

Re: Thoughts on convertible laptops ?

Thank you for the additional inputs guys :)

The particular Yoga mentionned above is interesting and relatively cheap, but :
1) It's Lenovo-made
2) It doesn't feature a real keyboard, which will be an issue for intensive typing

So far I'm leaning towards an Asus ZenBook Flip.

Thank you for your feedbacks guys. I mentionned the tablet because she'd use it for watching movies at home, especially in her bed. That's the only use she'd have for it. The Thinkpad line has been deliberately Macbookified! No Thinklight, no removal batteries for the X280 and Carbon, gigantic clickpads - but they can put real Thinkpad features on this.

Thoughts on convertible laptops ?

My mother is going to need a new laptop. She's mainly doing web browsing and typing, so she doesn't need anything powerful. (Keyboard isn't much of a concern to her, exit the need for a normal Thinkpad keyboard then  ). She also uses it to watch moview on Youtube when she's in her bed. For ...

Toshiba sells its laptop business to Sharp

Toshiba wants to sell its laptop business and it has found a buyer. Sharp, a subsidiary of the huge ODM Foxconn, will buy the business for a comparably low price. Sharp, the buyer of the business unit and itself a subsidiary of the Taiwanese company Foxconn, pays a comparably low sum for the busine...
