Re: Stay on Windows 11 or switch to Linux?

I still haven't been able to get my integrated wifi chip to work with Linux Mint. And that's after I spent a long time googling for tutorial, drivers, etc. I'm sure the OS is decent but it's pretty pathetic that on my particular setup it can't even do such a basic task as to connect to the Internet....

Re: Any Framework laptop adopters? I am a one, ask my anything

Looked at the product presentation page, I'm actually kinda shocked at the lack of detailed technical informations... for a product which is clearly geared towards technically minded users. E.g you have to download the user manual just to know the resolution of the screen. And there's not even any i...

Re: X220 unreliable power-ups

Buonasera,

I had similar power issues with my T60, and it turned out that the keyboard (where the power button is located) was faulty.

IBM's after-sale service replaced it and the issue was fixed.

Couldn't watch for more than half a minute.

Every other second the scene is cut to show the jury's stupid, faked facial expressions.

It's extremely unnerving. I don't know how you can put up with that.

Re: "Framework" laptops - a possible ersatz for us Thinkpad keyboard lovers ?

Agreed, giant trackpad certainly is a disease, with nefarious repercussions. But seeing as the palmrest is removable as well, there could be room to reconfigure the keys to our liking ; especially after the trackpad would be either dramatically shrinked or removed altogether. The flexibility of this...

Re: Is the forum dying?

Being a classic forumer, at first and for a long time I hated Reddit. Then, over time, I realised that this website is incredibly rich in terms of the communities it fosters (from funny cat pictures, to biology, to cryptocurrencies) ; and counts some very knowledgeable people, too. In fact, Reddit h...

Re: TRUE old tech users, using today

There really used to be so much more variation in phone designs. When I see phones now, I think they are all so boring. There is so little difference from one brand to another and one year's model to another, it is hard for me to understand how people can still have such strong brand loyalty. Exact...

Re: ReactOS

Personally, I came to the conclusion that Linux wasn't going to be a proper replacement for Windows. What's needed is an actual Windows clone, conceived from the ground up as a replica of William Gates' operating system. ReactOS seems to be the answer. They just need (ahem) more time, but more impor...

"Framework" laptops - a possible ersatz for us Thinkpad keyboard lovers ?

As we all know, a disreputable company going by the name of "Lenovo" has completely ruined the Thinkpad keyboards which we enjoyed up until the *20 generation. A few years ago, we all had high expectations about a possible revival of the True Thinkpad, which thanks to the input of David Hill, would ...

Re: Anyone here with Hyperacusis too?

Any other recommendation? Personally, I use the Moldex Spark Plugs 7800 . I've stopped using professional grade, molded earplugs because : 1) they don't protect as much 2) your ear canals will enlarge in time - so your molded earplugs won't fit anymore (they'll wobble) Finally I'll point you toward...

I don't think anyone forced you to buy anything, unless someone was holding a gun to your head and made you buy a laptop. Its your own choice which device you buy and you chose to buy a worse device because of your own hatred. It is self-imposed suffering. I had to buy a worse device because of Len...

Re: modern laptops with "trackpoint"

I truly hope that your Dell experience works out better than mine did, but it's not sounding that promising. Cheers. It's predictably bad. But I wouldn't have been really happier with a Lenovo anyway. (Good for you if it improved your experience at work, that's certainly important. Though I suspect...

So I've just taken hold of the Latitude 5400 which I had ordered a few days ago. Here are my fresh first impressions from unpacking it and running it for a dozen minutes. Okay, I've just ordered the Latitude 5400. I should receive it next week. It'll be my first Dell and I sure hope it won't suffer from the same coil whine as the XPS series :o Because of that potential issue, plus the subpar screen/keyboard/trackpoint, I took the middle range route. Had it been a Mod...

Okay, I'm upping this thread as I'm close to biting the bullet and getting the Dell Latitude 7490 (the smaller 7390 would have suited me better, but there's no trackpoint option AFAIK). My X220 is starting to fall apart. The plastics on the frame are of really bad quality compared to my T60. Thinkpads might be monsters, but Lenovopads sure ain't.

I agree that this is not unique to NZ. It's a trend that ALL government are doing. What's most disturbing for me is how easily the sheep, me included, have accepted less and less and less freedom and privacy every year. Shhh. It's for your own safety, citizen. Well IIRC that "Core" OS is a light Windows, so quite obviously it's aimed at the so-called "smartwatches" ; which happen to sport circular screens.

I actually think this is just part of a Japanese trend of declining sales and innovation - Not only Fujitsu, Toshiba and Sony but Sharp themselves haven't been doing that well either with their TVs. Or Panasonic and Pioneer TVs when was the last time you saw one of those? Or Sony's phones. A lot of...
