Re: Post your desktop.
You're not being 100% objective here. A Z16 is WAY faster than a T43. Meaning: all electronics inside the T43 are expected to work at lower frequencies and use higher voltages. The chips themselves were made using larger node litographies. Motherboard PCBs were noticeably thicker than current ones....

Re: Post your desktop.
https://i.ibb.co/sQgHNX7/1.jpg Updating the T43p to the latest OpenBSD release. A semi-annual ritual for the past half decade. A single core doesn't have much browsing power even using fvwm and netsurf. To the left, there's the Z13 and Z16, our daily drivers. The Z13 and the Z16 are both done. Mult...

WTT: 13.3" MacBook Pro - A1278 - New In Box
I was cleaning the attic and found a new in box MacBook Pro. 13.3. Model: A1278. The side reads, "MPB 13.3 / 2.5 / 2x4GB / 500 / SD" I assume that means 2.5GHz Sandy Bridge; 8GB of RAM, and a 500Gig platter drive. This is the last non-Retina MacBook Pro that can be upgraded to 16GB of RAM and still ...

Re: New Cars Tracking Information
50 year old parking garages collapse because American infrastructure is collapsing, but sure, let's blame it on the weight of vehicles that in their best year only constituted 4% of the new car market and are 1% of the total car market overall. There is a parking garage within walking distance of my...

Re: New Cars Tracking Information
I am 100% behind EVs coming onto market. When it comes time to finally retire my 23 MPG landyacht V8 coupe from the late 90s, I will be getting one. But that doesn't mean I'm rushing any of my cars to the scrapyard either. I like simple and old-fashioned, but I'm also getting to the point where fix...

Re: New Cars Tracking Information
My daily driver was designed in the last millennium and runs fine. It's paid off and does everything I need it to. No electronics until I bring my smartphone, plug into the AUX port, and listen that way. Plus, I like the way it drives. New cars are just not fun at all. I had a work rental a few mont...

Re: X1 Titanium SSD upgrade
Also, one thing I learned in the hunt, is that 2242, 2280, etc. refer to the size of the drive in millimeters (22x42mm, etc) and that there are even smaller 2230 and 1630 size drives. I never knew that before and thought I would share. All of my previous laptops took standard 2.5" drives or 2280 siz...

Re: X1 Titanium SSD upgrade
For my Z13, which also only takes 2242 size NVMe drives, I purchased: OWC Aura P13 M.2 2242 NVMe SSD (2.0 TB) For $144.99 on their website. It isn't the fastest in the world, (supposedly, I wouldn't know since it's plenty fast for me), but it has a 5 year warranty from OWC, who is the best in the bu...

Really cool to watch that video. Use magic eraser on the lid, it should remove the stains.
As for the OS, there are lots of cool systems from that era that you can probably get working reasonably well.

What's the purpose here?
I can only imagine value for businesses that operate in the Sinosphere, who have mistrust of Western products.
Is this intended for the West at all?

Re: Value of a NIB x31?
It's worth however much you were willing to pay, since I imagine there are less than a handful of X31's sitting in an unopened box 19 years later. FWIW, an iBook G4 from 2004, still in box sold for a little north of $400 earlier this year. That's probably as close as you'll find to what you have now...

Re: Fairphone 4
There hadn't been a security update since September, and it was still Android 11 as a base, so I installed CalyxOS on the FP4 today. The install procedures are incredibly simple and easy to follow; the official script handled everything well and I was able to install the new OS without issue **and**...

W530, easily. Desktop replacement, it's just a nicer system to type on, even if the screen isn't that great.

Re: WD Blue 2TB HDD Slow
I used to have a 2.5 WD Blue 2TB for ~5 years. They were slow, yet reliable. I used it for data storage only so speed wasn't a very important factor to me (OS was running from a separate smaller SSD) and I took it for granted that 5400RPM 2.5 HDDs are slow out of its nature. I got rid of that WD re...

Re: Negative feedbacks for traders and Tips for fair trading
Just leaving a warning for eBay user "discountonthego" I purchased a backup P71 last month. 4k, Xeon, 32GB RAM. Bidding started in the mid $600's, and I was the only bidder. Consequently, I won the laptop and paid immediately. Seller hemmed and hawed all week over why they could not actually ship th...

Changing username
Is it possible to change my username? Maybe I don't want to be my initials anymore.
I guess I can just sign up for a new account, but I don't want to give up 11 years of discussion / street cred (whatever that's worth) around here. Thoughts?

If it can wait a couple of months, I think I still have 2 NIB on a shelf somewhere at my house in the US. For a project that never happened half a decade ago.
Looking at my emails, it seems the model is HV150UX2-100.

Re: Fairphone 4
I've been using the Fairphone 4 for about 2 weeks now with Google Fi without issue. The phone itself is by far the most powerful smartphone I've owned, and also has the best camera(s) of any phone I've owned. The stock camera app is terrible, but I installed gCam and it's been great. Battery easily ...

Re: Fairphone 4
UPDATE: I bought one. Waiting on it to arrive. A modern phone that lets you repair and replace the parts without voiding the warranty is amazing. They have a sort of github for kernel sources and encourage aftermarket OS development. There are rumours that Fairphone is coming to the USA but that is ...

Re: Want to buy P7X ThinkPad
You can see a review of the P71 here . The system battery is not internal. I have two with the IPS LCD and the Xeon CPU available if you are interested. Send a message. Brad Brad is right. P70, P71 have traditional batteries. With the P72 it moved to an internal battery. Still easier to remove than...
