Re: Xue Yao talking about ThinkPad modding on Friday Mar 09, 2023
IMO the original Compute Module was too limiting, even the CM3. The CM4 provides a decent amount of CPU horsepower and additional capabilities (e.g. hardware video decoding) that older Thinkpads like the X40/41 and X60/61 lack . I did some research on whether a CM4-based replacement board for the X...

Re: Xue Yao is giving a talk about ThinkPad modding @ 11:00 GMT this Friday!
At one time I would have said I would have liked to see a custom motherboard for a classic thinkpad that made use of a raspberry pi CM module. The 51nb group has proven that updated motherboards could be made for the intel platform to make use of all the legacy hardware on the classic thinkpads. Mak...

Re: X210/X2100 embedded controller fixes (was: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control)
I run my EFI Gentoo Lignux (in fact GRUB) through the stock BIOS with disabled CSM. 6.5.0 here, both s2ram and s2disk work well. Maybe I have a bad machine. Even standard Debian 12 live USB ISO that uses EFI won't boot, and a HD with EFI won't booth. Either boots on every other machine I've tried, ...

Re: X210/X2100 embedded controller fixes (was: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control)
Do you need to patch the BIOS to get working EFI on the X210? I noticed today that the BIOS reports UEFI 2.x but I've tried to boot off both USB drives and hard drives that have a EFI partition -- both do not boot either presenting a black screen or an error "enter a proper boot device". Only boots...

Re: FS: ThinkPad "X61HK" 51nb X210 in a X60 Case
I remember seeing a lot about this Frankenstein job when I last bought my X210. I was fascinated by the photos I saw on the 51nb site. Could never fully understand the story around the photos as it was all in chinese, but the "zipper" in the photos explained to me a lot about what was done. Never th...

I'm in Missisauga and would agree to buy both and have them shipped. I have a W520 and I never got around to buying a second adapter and I always know one day that the adapter is going to kick-the-can. I want a second adapter and the third is good insurance incase one dies.

Re: X201 Linux doesn't power off after shutdown
Do you guys use Always On for USB power in the BIOS settings? Consider disabling that. It is one of the various things that can prevent a proper power down during shutdown. I typically will disable everything at the BIOS that I have no intentions of ever using just so that is one less thing to start...

Re: How to make trackpont work under linux
There are new issues with trackpoint starting with kernel 4.19 -- hence someone mentioned about buster. My history: I'm an old-school linux and thinkpad user. Been using linux exclusively on all my thinkpads since 2012. I always use the trackpoint and disable or not use the trackpad whenever possibl...

Did a bunch of testing using memtestx86+. After a bunch of passes, 0 errors on both modules. I've now managed to upgrade to the latest possible in debian (debian 9.7 with kernel 4.19). With both modules installed, I rarely can even get into a logged in state without the system crashing. If I run on...

Maybe the microcode fix was applied to your board already? Mine is part of the third batch (delivered from the factory in Dec 2018) and perhaps they forgot to apply the patch to the third batch. The problem was occurring a lot. Every computing session on the laptop included at minimum 3 reboots due...

Re: x201 screen mod, can I put an x61 1400x1050 screen on it
I got annoyed with the Core Solo and pulled out the X61T L7700 from storage. It has a broken hinge, but I'm hesitant to dismantle it as the pen digitizer is still working. I don't have a working battery for it, so it's locked down to just 1.2GHz due to the limiter built into the BIOS. The limiter i...

X200/X201 and X60/X61 LCD cables have the same connector at the motherboard. Nice, I'm also suspecting the keyboard connector is identical. If one were to have a spare X61 AFFS with a dead motherboard and a good X201 motherboard but dead screen.... the marriage of the two would create an ideal Thin...

Incorrect. Compare this X61 4-cell battery with the underside of the Frankenpad . X61 batteries have the release slider on the machine while the X201 batteries have it on the battery. There's all the proof you need. Good eyeballs you guys have. I'm just looking at the photos I archived of the same ...

He did the same thing with a X210 board. I observe that the battery is an X61 battery. In other capture shots from the X210 board version, I saw the audio and usb plugs on he right side lined up, so it must be using the original daughterboard of the X61/X62. The power plug appears both on the left a...

Re: Heat and fan noise and coilwhining with x210 ?
tpfancontrol won't work. I don't rarely get the fan engaged with regular usage in Linux, especially compared to the X62 where the fan is nearly always on in the same workload. I've put the X210 in storage because I'm having random seg faults. I discussed this in another thread -- I ruled out RAM, SS...

Wow they LITERALLY stitched an X61 and X201 body together, wow. The X63 is basically an X62 with an extra M.2 slot. It supports PCI but not the SATA lanes. They've also merged the sound card with the main board. https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=zh-CN&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fforum.51nb....

Re: X62 questions...
I have no issues with my X62 i7. As far as I know, they only ever used engineering samples for the i7. Maybe something to do with cost. I know the same "engineering sample" i7 chip has been increasing in price between each production batch for the board released.

It is actually working faster because it isn't dealing with segfaults and other i/o errors. At least disabling hyperthreading is not the same as disabling real cores, and since this system has double the number of cores then the X62, the performance has been great. How are you getting the CPU temper...
