Re: Thinkpad + Linux = I really want to learn !!

I have an external 32GB SSD (M.2 2242 SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure) with Debian installed. It boots much faster compared to a similar install on a USB 3.0 flash drive; the performance is good even when plugged to a USB 2.0 port. The USB 2.0 bottleneck only shows on heavy disk access, i.e. software up...

Re: Current Thinkpad models that support 32 gb ram (even unofficially)

Web browsers alone are horrendous RAM hogs.

When I first installed Ubuntu on my T61 I used the same 32-bit CD on my A31p. An unexpected benefit was no process could exceed 4GB RAM so browsing didn't hang my 8 GB machine!

Re: What to do if Computrace is activated in your TP BIOS

Just coreboot the machine, X220 has perfect coreboot support. Less hassle :) There are obviously other, perhaps related, backdoors so Coreboot may be the solution. Much love for Thinkpads but every Chinese company is an organ of the Party. Nothing anyone here does with their entertainment/hobby mac...

And who needs 32GB of RAM?
Those who run virtual machines. 32GB isn't much nowadays.

I use Windows VMs for interacting with Kindle, then immediately use Calibre to convert my ebooks to use them on all my devices. https://calibre-ebook.com/

All my Linux installs get Calibre. It's popular for good reason. Binary installs preferred: https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

My solution to webmail interfaces is not to use them. I've used Thunderbird for many years to interact with all my email accounts because webmail interfaces annoy me. On Windows I use Thunderbird Portable so I can copy the program folder including all saved messages and burn to DVD (malware can't wr...

Re: Thinkpad + Linux = I really want to learn !!

I've run several similar spec T61s for shop PCs with no problem. Gaming is for gaming boxes. I prefer light DEs and mostly use xfce.

Any distro should do so try a variety (remember you can run live off USB to test) and have fun!

Re: ThinkPad P52 boot issue

I stopped dual booting off a single hard disk back in the early-2000s because it's much more hassle than running a host OS and virtual machines. I warn people away from dual booting unless their Thinkpad is too ancient to make a usable host. A P52 has ample power to run VMs which is why I bought min...

Re: Best time / place to buy a P52?

Getting an SSD to replace the disposable spinner placeholder is the way to go. I ordered my P52 (I cancelled the P72 I was going to buy after reading too many BIOS issue posts) with one so I'd get the SSD cable which isn't otherwise supplied. I threw in 64GB more RAM, disconnected the WD spinner, in...

Re: Stop W10 from automatically updating SPECIFIC drivers.

You can install Windows (or anything else) as you prefer in a VM then take a clean snapshot to which you can always revert. The safest way to run Windows is on a Linux host. Virtualbox is easy to get started with and you may never need anything more advanced. Virtual machines can be left disconnecte...

I agree on using a Linux host. If you need anything Windows-specific you can run Windows in a VM or using Wine if the program is compatible.

Re: Did my T440p died? Help me diagnose it

If you need Windows you don't necessarily need it on bare metal. I prefer to confine it to virtual machines which never connect to the internet and run Linux hosts. I like being able to boot to any snapshot including a new clean install at will. I like never having to update Windows unless it serves...

The problem is the ancient spinning rust HD. No distro will solve that problem, but small SSDs are plentiful around $20 or less new.
Longer battery life will be a bonus.

Re: Looking for a devil's advocate: why SHOULDN'T I move to Linux completely ?

I see no reason to "switch" when I can have it all at zero cost. It's trivially easy to use VMs. My Linux hosts have Windows guests and Windows hosts have Linux guests. If I only ran one or the other I'd still use VMs to have different OS versions and test applications before loading to bare metal....

Re: Good distro for replacing Windows?

I keep a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7 with folders containing any applications and printer drivers. They are easy to prepare for both Windows and Linux. If ...

Re: T61p 15.4 - Keep or ditch for W500

I don't see an SSD mentioned. If still using spinning rust for your operating system drive, an SSD will make your machine much nicer to use. The old spinner can be used for extra storage in a caddy. Even if you replace your T61 an SSD is a very good idea because old spinners are severe performance b...

I do everything I'd do with a Windows box with much greater convenience, control and stability. If I want to run Windows-only applications I run them in a virtual Windows machine using KVM. I don't dual boot and dislike it. Before VMs were convenient I used hard disk swap racks instead or selected m...

COA labels are controlled items (and useless unless you have a particular reason to want one) but if you aren't good at remembering software keys you could type yours, print on a label, then paste that in the battery compartment for reference. You can read your existing key with a variety of free ut...

Re: Protect MBR from ransomware

For maximum protection, run Windows in a virtual machine on a Linux host. You can take a clean Snapshot in Virtualbox (a good basic virtualization solution) and a fresh install is a VM reboot away. The best way to protect Windows is by running it as a guest OS, and if you are that interested in secu...

No matter what you eventually bought, a Comp Sci student should have zero difficulty running Linux and other OS in virtual machines. I've been throwing Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on T61s for years with not much fuss, but sometimes it just hangs because it's Windows. I greatly prefer Linux on T61s and anything else I can run it on. Easy way is wait for a cheap Intel GPU donor notebook and swap whatever is good from yours. My WUXGA T61 is made from an Intel base and a screen from a dead Nvidia unit. Takes little effort to swap.

I don't find the labor involved to possibly rescue garbage GPUs for a little longer worth it though T61s are easy to disassemble. I strongly advise anyone with a set of floppies to image them using Winimage or similar on Windows (dd in Linux) and make self-extracting files so you can write fresh floppies if your originals become corrupted. Self-extracting files are handiest because you don't need the program which produced the...
