Re: Good distro for replacing Windows?

Windows installs deteriorate over time. The colloquial term is "winrot" and the usual solution is nuke and pave (wipe and reinstall). I keep a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7 with folders containing any applications and printer drivers. They are easy to prepare for both Windows and Linux. If ...

Re: T61p 15.4 - Keep or ditch for W500

I don't see an SSD mentioned. If still using spinning rust for your operating system drive, an SSD will make your machine much nicer to use. The old spinner can be used for extra storage in a caddy. Even if you replace your T61 an SSD is a very good idea because old spinners are severe performance b...

Re: What do you do with Linux?

I do everything I'd do with a Windows box with much greater convenience, control and stability. If I want to run Windows-only applications I run them in a virtual Windows machine using KVM. I don't dual boot and dislike it. Before VMs were convenient I used hard disk swap racks instead or selected m...

Re: Replace base x220- how to get coa label/touch button adhesive?

COA labels are controlled items (and useless unless you have a particular reason to want one) but if you aren't good at remembering software keys you could type yours, print on a label, then paste that in the battery compartment for reference. You can read your existing key with a variety of free ut...

Re: Protect MBR from ransomware

For maximum protection, run Windows in a virtual machine on a Linux host. You can take a clean Snapshot in Virtualbox (a good basic virtualization solution) and a fresh install is a VM reboot away. The best way to protect Windows is by running it as a guest OS, and if you are that interested in secu...

No matter what you eventually bought, a Comp Sci student should have zero difficulty running Linux and other OS in virtual machines. They are better for learning than bare metal because you can restore to a previous state. You can network virtual OS and try any software you like at no risk of borkin...

I've been throwing Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on T61s for years with not much fuss, but sometimes it just hangs because it's Windows. I greatly prefer Linux on T61s and anything else I can run it on. If you don't absolutely require Windows I suggest experimenting with various live Linuxes off USB key...

Easy way is wait for a cheap Intel GPU donor notebook and swap whatever is good from yours. My WUXGA T61 is made from an Intel base and a screen from a dead Nvidia unit. Takes little effort to swap.

I don't find the labor involved to possibly rescue garbage GPUs for a little longer worth it though T61s are easy to disassemble. Organ donors are so cheap on Ebay it's less hassle to find a T61 with no hard disk and an Intel GPU and swap your parts over. I don't buy boards since people who pull boa...

Re: List of Thinkpads that Supported OS/2

I strongly advise anyone with a set of floppies to image them using Winimage or similar on Windows (dd in Linux) and make self-extracting files so you can write fresh floppies if your originals become corrupted. Self-extracting files are handiest because you don't need the program which produced the...

You can use a Windows XP .iso image and a USB tool (Rufus is excellent) to prepare a USB flash drive to perform your install. You may copy additional drivers and applications to a folder on the drive to finish the installation. This is less prone to error IMO than using an external drive, though I k...

Deep Freeze by Faronics is an old standby for locking down school and business PCs, but it also is fine for reverting your machine to a clean state each reboot. It's around fifty bucks but eliminates need for other programs such as AV which devour RAM. No changes including malware survive the reboot...

OP could always sell the tablet mainboard here or on Ebay.

Alternate option, get a dead X200 tablet or a BIOS-locked one since there's no need for the mainboard. I've been considering the same thing
since it's so inexpensive.

Your mileage may vary with live CD/DVD but with a good drive you can boot most of them. You could build a better Polish Win7 x54 recovery image for any computer by slipstreaming driverpacks and any software you want to load, then sysprepping the image. Don't limit yourself to recovery disks. They are convenient but not ideal, and you know what apps you prefer. A single sysprepped image...

Nice distro with a MUCH more useful program selection (for me anyway) than on most live distros. Re: Is it difficult to remove Windows and Load Ubuntu?

OP can do it without spending any money by burning recovery media for the T61 before he installs Ubuntu. If he decides he misses Windows he can do a clean reinstall that way. Since a Ubuntu live CD or USB will boot and run on a T61 he can even use the T61 between installs or with no hard disk at all...

BTW this may serve you if you want to make more than one set of recovery media in case one gets damaged.
