I don't think Windows 10 is worth upgrading to at all, but that's just my opinion.

Re: Refurbishing is in order

Goo Gone is a funny substance and I've noticed differences between various batches. I mostly use it on the lids, but these have be to re-cleaned - preferably with isopropyl alcohol - because GG does leave a sticky feeling more often than not. I try not to use it on the palmrests, though. If a palmr...

Re: School district changes iPads for laptops, Teachers call them "toys"

I'm 22 and a few years after I left school I noticed that my handwriting had degraded dramatically. It was bad enough that I compared it to some handwriting I did at the age of 5, and it wasn't too far off. I've since started to write a lot more, and my handwriting has bounced back to be even better...

Good to hear!

Magic Eraser is also abrasive, so that's probably why it worked so well. I haven't used one of those in years. Maybe I should get one.

I'm not totally surprised by what has happened to the T50. I am however interested in knowing more about your love affairs. :P  Five years ago I bought a brand new Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L mATX motherboard. For its price point it was decent. I got it in February of 2011, and by late March it w...

Re: Refurbishing is in order

Let me guess, our very own RBS is the fellow forum member in question, right? :P For the palmrest I'd recommend Goo Gone if you can find it. It works well to remove sticky grime. It might work on the lid too. I'd had some success with making lids look good again by really scrubbing at them with Goo ...

Not sure about ThinkPads but I know with other brands of computers there is usually a recovery procedure involving the use of a floppy disk.

Have a look around on Google.

Re: W7/SP1 Windows Update stuck checking for updates

Microsoft has released a new hotfix for Windows Update. Yet another alteration to win32k.sys. This time it's KB3161608. I have installed this hotfix and found Windows Update scan times greatly reduced. Windows Update returns results in 3-7 minutes. These are existing installs. I have yet to try it o...

It also depends on what browser you use. I use Pale Moon, and I find it to be considerably less CPU intensive than Firefox and Chrome.

I already have a pair of UXGA S-IPS monitors on my desktop, so no FrankenPad for me. At least not at the moment.

Re: How long a max-ed out T601 FrankenPad will last until obsolete

Performance wise, I've had no problem at all using my T60 and other 945 based Core 2 Duo laptops. I am using Windows XP though. I suppose it depends heavily on what you use them for, plus your level of tolerance. My tolerance is pretty high, since I still use Pentium Ms. The T60 almost feels like a ...

Most Dells cool themselves pretty well, even the consumer ones which are typically louder for some reason. Of course Dells aren't immune to a high-powered GPU sharing the heatsink with a CPU, or even the various subpar CPU architectures that have been around. I know they made a Pentium 4 ThinkPad, i...

I've noticed that dedicated GPUs in old laptops run hotter under Windows Vista / 7 than they do with XP. Perhaps your burn-in test was successful because the GPU didn't reach its thermal threshold. I agree with a few other people here in thinking that there is something not quite right with the way ...

Check the lid switch. The one that tells the laptop to standby. It may still have moisture in it, shorting the contacts.
