HARDWARE LOOKS TO BE OK Not knowing how to locate and remove the rootkit, I have used the Last Resort -- starting from scratch with the Recovery disks. I forgot how much time this takes :( With the fresh install, I no longer get the disk-check prompt when I reboot (I've been through numerous reboots...

Re: T42 Erratic Behavior Diagnosis

FOR THE INFORMATION OF ALL INTERESTED READERS ... Drives that comply with the S.M.A.R.T. standard are designed with extra storage space (over and above their nominal capacity). With every storage access, they check the integrity of each allocation unit (usually sector, for a hard disk), and if that ...

In case anyone is interested in the progression of my "soap opera" ... ROOTKIT Although there is clearly a rootkit, several packages I installed that are supposed to be able to detect and clean common rootkits failed to detect anything. Actually, GMER (which is very detailed) found a large number of...

HD Tune Pro error scan passed (twice) with no errors. I have just run RootkitRevealer ... because the symptoms are so weird and flaky. Re: T42 Erratic Behavior Diagnosis

Well, my brain is almost melted ... I tried copying from the saved dd image into the new disk in the drive bay, and also copying directly from the Travelstar (via a USB adapter) to the new disk in the drive bay. Same results as before ... won't boot, and my attempts at "rescue" don't work. Deeply ba...

Re: T42 Erratic Behavior Diagnosis

@Ray & George, I used the linux dd command (something I have done literally hundreds of times). I don't copy partitions (for example, /dev/sda1), but rather the entire block device (/dev/sda) which captures the MBR & partition table, along with everything else. Because I'm using the suspect machine,...

1. Made a byte-for-byte image of the T42 disk drive 2. Observed that when plugged into another XP machine via a USB/PATA adapter, there was no warning or notification that the drive's first partition (C: on the T42) was not properly unmounted. This is interesting, because on power-up or reboot, the ...

T42 Erratic Behavior Diagnosis

Hello, friends! My problem is not necessarily T42-specific, but I suspect it may be a hardware fault which I haven't isolated. The T42 runs XP SP2. _________________________________ SYMPTOMS 1. The first symptom was an error message (don't have the text, did not happen recently) about being unable t...

Re: T43 Win XP Stuck at low CPU frequency

The battery is old, but can still power the T43 for almost 60 minutes. In my history with these machines, I have not seen battery condition affect the performance when on the AC power supply. Sometimes I run T4xs without any battery at all! However, your comments jogged my brain (which is also old!)...

T43 Win XP Stuck at low CPU frequency

Running XP SP3 (I know, I know) Within the past couple of days, I noticed that two things about the old T43: 1. It runs even slower than usual 2. The fan runs very little, with temperatures staying low (49-54C) I put on the Windows Performance Monitor (perfmon), which shows the clock frequency rock-...

Re: Difficulty finding driver

You guys rule! I figured the hardware fault (SB chip) is not a likely culprit, because the HD functions so well under Linux. dr_st, you got it in one :) By way of background, there's some mechanical fault on this machine (got it on ebay for a hundred bucks) that prevents the HD from mating solidly w...

Difficulty finding driver

My ancient T43 suddenly got dramatically slow (think continental drift slow). After some diagnosis, I saw that the disk read rate is something like 4% of what it should be -- but only running XP, when I measure speed from Linux it is absolutely normal. So, it must be something about the Win XP confi...

Re: Problem with Explorer (system) Font

Tonight, I was able to resolve the problem -- thanks to a young friend with much experience of this stuff :) Somehow, the 'Theme' got altered along the way. I don't know how -- I certainly didn't take any action that I expected to alter it. But reverting to a standard Theme both restored the menus t...

Ray, Thank you for responding! The Font Size has been at Normal throughout. In the standard scheme I use, menu bars are gray (at least, by default). Problem with Explorer (system) Font

I'm using an old T43 with 1024 X 768. I made a display settings change, which left effects I don't know how to undo. I tried modifying the "DPI Setting" in Display Settings -> Advanced. Note: It was initially "Normal size (96 DPI)". My changes didn't have the effect I was looking for, so I put the s...

Re: How secure is the harddrive password when set in bios?

2 cents from a student of security. Because of the weakest-link principle, practically nothing is as secure as it was designed to be. Sadly, nowadays a large proportion of malware seems to include keystroke logging. If even once such a program was running when you typed a security passphrase, that p...

Re: Spontaneous USB Connect & Disconnect Sounds

Follow-up on the issue: 1. The malware scans came up clean. 2. Before I shutdown the T43, I used Device Manager to delete and then renew all of the USB controller & hub entries. This apparently made no difference, as the noises happened a couple of times very shortly after I did this. 3. Since I pow...

Spontaneous USB Connect & Disconnect Sounds

I recently got a T43 in very good condition. I've been using it about 3 months now, with no misbehavior until about an hour ago. Adding WiFi to a T43

I'm looking at a T43 that doesn't have WiFi (although it seems to have the WiFi indicator-light mask below the LCD). The seller says that it has the mini PCI slot (perhaps they all do). My understanding is that the WiFi card uses an antenna in the T43's lid. Do all T43s come with this antenna, even ...

All of the Thinkpads I've bought (quite a stack of them, now that I think of it) have been Flexview, so I can't compare to Thinkpad non-Flexview displays. But the viewing angle is terrific, and was quite a big thing for its day. If you can easily read the screen from 45 degrees to either side, then ...

Re: Transferring XP HD between similar Thinkpads

Thanks, George! For anyone who may be interested, I just picked up a replacement Thinkpad. The old one (shuts down spontaneously) is a T43p 2687DUU. The new one (it was expensive, but looks like it was never used) is a T43 2687D4U -- I'm using it to post this reply :) Along with the T43, I bought a ...

@RealBlackStuff (or anyone else, who might know): I did replace the fan about one year before the shutdowns began (see above). By LCD blemishes, I mean dark/dim spots on the display, specifically NOT including: * broken pixels, * dirt/stains on the front (outer) surface, * backlight malfunction, or * mechanical "pinch effects" (LCD response to pressure) such as are often seen at one or more corners. The kind I mean are irre...

Thanks for the info, lukee. You asked about TPFanControl, which I'm not using. Is it better (I mean, less likely to overheat?) Also, I don't have a reading of the temperature -- does TPFanControl show that? I replaced the entire fan assembly about a year ago, and I think I did a fairly good job of c...

This is indirectly related to my first post on T43p sudden power loss. It will probably not be practical, to find an ident...

T43p Sudden Power Loss

A 2687DUU, with both external power and a charged battery, is abruptly powering down every few hours, for no apparent cause. [There has been no sudden movement or mechanical shock in these episodes. Also, no unusual temperatures, or abnormal fan operation.] To restart the T43, it is necessary to dis...
