hmm
Maybe worth a try, to get a more current OS on the G40.

Re: Which T60 should I chose?
+1 on the T61. You are not memory limited as the T60. So you can run Win7 with more memory. I have 6GB in my T61, running Win7. I found that with 4GB, I was using max RAM regularly, so the memory was probably swapping a lot. With 6GB I have more free memory, so it is likely not swapping much. But go...

Re: [T30] New (but late) owner of this great laptop *PIC*
If the SSD from the Toshiba is a PATA drive, I would move it into the T30. Alternatively, get a mSATA SSD and a mSATA to PATA adapter. I have this setup in my T23. The SSD will increase the performance and decrease battery drain. And the SSD will be cooler inside than the spinning HD, so less heat f...

Re: G-series hard drive upgrade/replacement question
The other option is to put a mSATA SSD into a mSATA to PATA adapter. I have one in my T23 and Dell C400. It really made a difference in how fast the OS boots and on drive intensive activities, I can really see the speed increase on these older PCs. On the PC with a HD, I can just seen the disk light...

I think you can apply the Middleton BIOS directly. If you have not, here are some upgrades that I did/plan to do. - RAM, as much as you can afford. System max is 8GB. Depending on what you do, you could see significant improvement by the system not having to swap files to/from the HD, I did. - switc...

Re: To Middleton my BIOS or not
i think the whitelist is worth it because you're limited to 54g cards with the Lenovo ID only? That's not acceptable 5yrs ago let alone today. Most of my downloads are less than 50 MBps/500 Mbps (Gb modem, switches, and nic), and many below 10 MBps/100 Mbps. Today, that slow speed is quite irritati...

Unless you increase the throughput of the drive interface, I would not bother going to SSD. Just leave the HD in there.

Re: New Lenovo T61 Questions
The problem with RAM is the blasted 4GB modules are so expensive
I ended up splitting my two 4GB modules between my two T61s, with each having 6GB (4+2 config). Not as good as going all the way to 8GB, but better than 4GB (for Win7-x64).

Re: New Lenovo T61 Questions
BIOS, then hardware, then OS, then apps. 1) BIOS - Depending on what hardware you are planning to install, you may need to install the BIOS before the hardware. I understand that there are certain things that may cause a POST failure, because the factory BIOS is not allowing it. The other is the dri...

The T61 is a nice computer. I am in the process of setting up my 2nd T61. I "enhanced" it and plan to do a bit more in the near future. Then I am going back to upgrade the 1st T61.

Re: T61 and streaming video (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M)
Check if there is another computer in your office that will play streaming video smoothly. Because the problem may not be your computer but rather your ISP, the internet connection, the internet itself or the source server. - Even on my quad core desktop, I have had video stutter or stop. To me this...

Re: Solid State Hard Drive on T23 (w/pictures)
Update to my T23 and SSD. I moved the 120GB SSD to another computer. I decided that another laptop could use the larger SSD more than the T23. So I got to do this all over again with a 64GB SSD in the T23. This time I made a few changes. - I partitioned the SSD as before, as an external drive on a X...

Recently did this with my two T61s, and it worked just fine.
I'm moving the best stuff to one of the T61s, and upgrading it as much as I can, to be my primary T61.

Re: Price check: G41 in perfect condition
Flash and Java, basically a lot of web surfing is painful with the old machines. I will use one of my old...

Re: Price check: G41 in perfect condition
Well, this is difficult. These systems seem really rare; and getting one in working condition (not to mention cosmethics) seem pretty hard. The G40/41 may be somewhat rare, but, what are you going to run on it? I have an upgraded G40 with a P4, and all I can run is XP, or Linux. The 2GB max RAM on ...

Re: Price check: G41 in perfect condition
Don't know. As much as I like my G40 and wanted a G41, the slowish single core processor, 2GB RAM limit and PATA drive interface were too constraining, and limited me to Win-XP (or Linux). So even though I like my G40, I've abandoned it for a T61 with 6GB of RAM and a SSD running Win7. So that is th...

Re: Keeping my nine year old alive, and SSD recommendation
I think Win10 will want/need too much resources to run well on the T60. Also, and importantly, you likely will not have the T60 drivers for Win10, so you have to make do with generic drivers, which may not work as well. On my T61, I have stopped at Win7, and I have 6GB of RAM in it. Granted I don't ...

Not all mSATA to IDE adapters work the same. I have one (Aleratec) that refused to work on my Dell C400, the BIOS refused to see the drive, but worked fine in my T23. But you bring up a question. Both of the following are running XP. Device Manager reports the following UDMA modes. My T23 with an Al...

T61 replacement WiFi card?
I've been reading the threads, and it seems the recommendations narrow down to the Intel Ultimate-n 6300 and Atheros AR9380. So any comments between these 2 cards? Or is there a newer card that is better? I have the Middleton BIOS, so that clears the whitelist issue. And I have 3 antenna leads on th...

Well now I HAVE to replace the fan, it just died.
Thankfully, it limped on for long enough for me to get a new main computer built, and files transferred to it.
Now the fan replacement is not so critical. Important, but not critical.

I have a fan that is going bad on my T61. The fan heatsink assembly are 'refurbished' which I presume means the fan is original and could be 10+ years old. Therefore, I would rather just replace the fan to get one with a new/good bearing. It seems that the fans on eBay are only being sold out of Ger...

I've been busy.
Screen is still in the box.
I'm getting up the nerve to do surgery on the lid to replace the screen.
update.
I'm also holding off to get a Bluetooth 4 module, to put into the lid.
That way I go into the lid just once.

I know that basically everything about an SSD is better than a mechanical drive, but I keep wondering about the slim possibility that an SSD can suddenly stop working without any warning signs, unlike a mechanical drive which starts making odd noises well before it fails. This is probably more a pr...

For the primary drive, the only time I ever do that is when I am installing a new OS, and blowing out the old one.

Re: Anyone use this drive?
I have the 500GB version in my T61. :D But having said that. I am questioning even 500GB. The only reason I put a 500GB drive into my T61, was that it was replacing my old desktop as my primary computer, so ALL of my stuff went on it. My pictures directory tree was over 100GB. And I forget the size ...
