Re: Your favorite Linux distro on a Thinkpad? Why?

At the moment, I've got Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my W510 and Mint 17.2 on my X201T. I like both. Mint is an easier adjustment from Windows. Ubuntu seems a bit slicker. I haven't used either enough to form any deep opinions. I recently worked on a laptop that was running Mint and it made a favorable impr...

Thanks. I never look on amazon and I didn't see them on eBay. It turns out the key word was NGFF. I tried "Nvme to IDE" and drew a blank but "NGFF to IDE" finds the ones on eBay.

Re: Upgrading drive in ThinkPad T510 to SSD

I bought the adapter for my W500 years ago. It's a b+m key adapter. It looks like it's the same as this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/386897126783 The drive is a Lenovo b+m drive. It was a screaming bargain when I bought it and a lot less than a regular Sata SSD even with the price of the adapter. T...

Re: Upgrading drive in ThinkPad T510 to SSD

Both will work. I've been running a W500 for years on a 512gb nvme drive in an SATA adapter. The speed is limited by the SATA interface so both options will give you the same speed. Nvme in native mode is much faster. In any case, any SSD will be much faster and quieter than the original Lenovo drive.

Re: Selling online $600 tax rule

Enforcement of the $600 rule has been suspended since the first year. I can't remember who lobbied for this but I only got a 1090 one year several years ago. I don't sell a lot on eBay these days but I've sold over $600 several years since then. The first year, I was notified by eBay when I sold a c...

Re: Any reason to keep both a 770z and T23?

At the moment, I can't bear to get rid of either one. One more question for the experts: is there a limit to the size of the hard disk in the 770z? I just tested a 120 gb mSata SSD in an mSata to IDE adapter and it was recognized. My educated guess is it's the 2tb 32 bit LBA limit as I see LBA is u...

T580 Compared to Classic Thinkpads and Macbook Pro

Just some subjective impressions here, no benchmarks or structured testing. This is the first Thinkpad I've bought in years and it's a direct replacement for a W500 that I've been using for years for work and business purposes. I just cloned the linux system and data I had on the W500 so I'm using t...

Re: Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

=The telemetry service can be disabled in the services control applet in all versions of Windows, even 10. It does stay disabled on reboot unlike Windows Update. Not quite, there are different levels of telemetry (you can review them in for instance, shutup10), and the 3rd level will randomly re-en...

Re: Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

Microsoft needs to give up on the intrusive behavior. The more computer savy among us are not going to allow it to happen. Maybe we're not their targets? Do you use any Google software (Chrome browser etc) or an Android device ? If so, the Windows telemetry is non-issue for you :D Not an apples to ...

Re: Windows XP x64 on T520

I tried it on a W520. It actually had decent driver support but it took some searching to find drivers. Nvidia had a compatable driver but it wasn't nearly as good as the Optimus driver supplied by Lenovo for Windows 7. The main issue was that it didn't handle the i7 multithreading very well. Most o...

Re: W700 GPU and Display

I've never had any issues with flickering. As I said, while not IPS, the W700 and W701 do have high quality displays. They have RGB backlights which allows for color adjustments. The W701 has an LED RGB backlight which is probably why it looks so much better. The actual specs of the different Thinkp...

Re: W700 GPU and Display

The GPU swap is easy. It will take all of 10-15 minutes. It is on its own board held in with two screws. I did the upgrade on my W700 which I sold a few months ago. The 1920x1200 Max Bright display is gorgeous but it is not Flexview. It is much better on the W701 which is one reason why I let go of ...

Re: OK to use old version of Lenovo Power Manager on older Thinkpad models?

All of my Thinkpads have the version of Power Manager they came with from the restore partition image or the one I installed when I first set it up. Once it works, I never upgrade. In the case of my newer Thinkpads, the W520, X201T, X220T and W701, I use the most recent version because I downloaded ...

Re: Booting from an SD card on X61 tablet

The X201 Tablet will boot from an SD card. It is the only Thinkpad I know of that will. It sees the SD card in the BIOS as a USB drive. On mine, I have Linux Mint 17.2 on a 64gb SDXC card. I've partitioned it with 32gb as a fat 32 partition and a 24gb system and 8gb swap partition. If the fat 32 par...

I have no issues with Facebook on a W500 with the switchable graphics set to Intel Graphics. It might be the browser, not the GPU that makes it burp on a W701. Facebook is a monster script wise and I have it thoroughly adblocked and script limited and on the server side, all games and apps disabled ...

Re: Speed difference W510 i7 720QM vs W520 2720QM

Windows 7 and Vista handle multi core processing well. The only OS I've tried that had problems was XP x64. I've never seen one core pegged and the others idle in 7. Processing is evenly distributed regardless of app unless there is some special setup to use one or two cores as in a VM. The W510 and...

Re: Speed difference W510 i7 720QM vs W520 2720QM

The W520 is much faster and uses much less wattage at the same time. I don't know why but the W510 with a 720QM that I had years ago burned more watts than my W701 with an 820QM. The W520 is much faster than either but the W701 has a great display while the W510 doesn't have any advantages at all ov...

Ubuntu was stable and usable until I tried launching a Windows 10 Virtualbox VM. It had a hard crash of both hos...

Re: How many of you no longer own laptops?

I've got a 17" 5:4 LCD monitor, a Cornea CT1702. I love the 5:4 SXGA display but the reason I have it is its sync range. You can put the desktop under the table, so it's not the desktop per se that's taking up desk space, but the monitor and keyboard. An Amiga 2500 purchased in 1994. It still works. I replaced the motherboard 10 years ago. It isn't one of the more collectible Amigas but it is still worth more than I paid for it which is a rare thing with computers.

In Thinkpads, my 770X bought in 2002. Neither get turned on very often.
