Thanks, I have put my location in now fwiw. I really can't be buying disks for a comp I want to sell - hopefully today as it simply isn't worth the lack of profit left in it. I run a business (not computers) and I just want the thing wiped clean with a fresh install so I can sell it

I have reformatted the drive but the intel boot is still there and I don't have recovery cd's - I only borrowed the woindows home cd from a friend. Am now well and truly stuck as I can't get back my f11 prompt either and I have tried the link on the forum to get back that - the drive images don;t ap...

I thought another copy of the disk would work, but hey the product key I have won't work with this disk. MS are more crafty than I had thought....I am now having to erase the system partition entirely to get me out of the windows set-up it keeps on launching me back in to. F11 doesn't work now UC.

Been there done that

Thanks Harry, but I have been through the same screens and it runs exactly the same procedure over and over again - nothing new copied, no OS. It certainly doesn't convince me to keep trying five dozen times (currently I must have tried it at least four or five). It just reboots half way through, th...

errr...nope

Andy, Thanks for that but unfortunately that doesn't work - the product recovery version 5.6 (blue screen bios looking type interface) just keeps on coming back up no matter what I do after running the ful recovery option. Honestly it's like the proverbial American Groundhog Day! I chucked a windows...

R31 stuck in product recovery - reboots back into it

I am sorting out my old laptop to sell it and wanted to restore everything to factory settings. Not a problem or so I thought... I instigated rescue and recovery and told it to restore to factory settings and all seemed to go fine except now it won't boot into xp and just keeps on coming back to the...

Do you know anyone else with a Thinkpad - doesn't have to be same model as long as ODD drive fits the bay - then you check whether it is ODD or system prob.

HMMs

I would second that - the Hardware Maintenance Manuals are v useful if you like to do work on them - bit like a Haines manual for a car really. I have a r31 and have found it really reliable and tough, but easy to work on. Hope you enjoy your R31.

Cheers

Ah, 'twas right then ;)

Thanx for clarification Thane - I have been digging around and it seems that the Broadcom one mentioned is pre WPA/WPA2, but there is a Atheros based card by IBM which is compatible with X23/X24 which share same chipset (X24 does) as R31 and also have same minipci type slot (although for some reason...

Thanks guys for your replies - glad to see signal improves with card Jay although never heard of netstumbler so I'm sure that wouldn't be an issue for me! As for combo cards Thane, I'm a bit confused - do you need a modem in that card if you already have the lucent one on your machine as I do (I bel...

AC adapter

Do these comps work ok plugged into AC without a battery? One sure-fire way of telling the adapter is working ok. Brilliant!

That's great to know Jay - I have now asked Undeclocker on that link. Does it pick up good signal strength? I have a PCMCIA card by linksys and it struggles to get a connection - apart from tidyness and freeing up the PCMCIA which use to do my downloading of pics (via USB2 hub) I would think somethi...

Hi Underclocker, Do you have any more Broadcom BCM94306MP's left? I would like to get hold of one for my R31 - it would also need antennas for a 14.1" monitor. :? Wireless Cards Compatible with R31?

Does anyone know which mini pci wi-fi cards you can drop into a R31? I was thinking of getting one and not sure which. I would dearly love to slot a 802.11g one in but lenovo won't say anything about backwards compatibility of the newer cards to older models.

Thermal pads

I have had my R31 apart recently - they apparently use thermal pads when assembled so there isn't the gunky compound or grease - just a fairly hard to get rid of grey residue together with a plastic 'surround' on the heatsink side. If you carefully use acetone on a cotton bud you should be able to r...

New CPU Installed!

Hey, got a 1.2GHz PIII-M SL6A7 on Ebay for £12.50 and swapped the old 1.13 celeron out, nicely got myself gunged up with heatsink comp, but got the new one well seated. Hey presto we have 1196GHz with proper stepping and a little less power usage :) I had checked all the specs and it seemed to match...

Thanks Thane. Just got the machine back together. Was a bit tricky getting rid of the old gunk but prized the heatpad off - I worked it out eventually that it was actually a pad rather then some sort of template. Used a real combination of stuff to try and get it cleaned up as best I could - Acetone...

Had the TP apart now, turns out it is a SL642 - a 478 pin Mobile Celeron 1.13. The socket 370 looks like a monster in size compared to it! Just hoping the ebayer that sold me it accepts it back... Otherwise I will have one for sale... Now gotta get the old cpu seated back in with heatsink. Shall nee...

Bought it, hope it is right one now...

Thanks Thane, I won the auction and got it for just over 20 quid. I have found that my r31 is a 2GG which I think equates to the 2Gx ,assuming the x is a wildcard designation. The 2Gx can be a Series II or III but since it originally has a 1.13Ghz celeron then that means it is Series II from what I ...

I cannot get the Hitachi drive to work -tried every conceivable way of arranging the data from the old drive no the new one and repairing or replacing MBR. It just will not boot it. I am beginning to think there truly is a limit at 40GB on size of HDD on the R31. My last ditch attempt is to take a 4...
