Re: Upgrade Display on T420

You can buy a new display panel online and swap the displays. It's easy just: speedster the display bezel from the lid, disconnect old panel, connect new panel and close the bezel again. You can even get a shiny glossy display! Just make sure you get a panel that works for your system. A good place...

Re: I have lost my faith in the Thinkpad Brand.

I have two lenovos now - a now dead R500, just died in last months of warranty. And a totally cheapo Ideapad...the plastic around the hinges is totally broken away..I will post a photo later. However, it has outlived the R500! This is probably just accidental. However, I am now hesitating between a...

Re: T420 build quality. Is it good after all?

It depends on your use case. For example, just last week I was prototyping a server build for work and had 3 VMs running on top of my host OS. 2 of the VM's required 3gb of RAM each and 1 of the VM's required 6gb. So that left 4gb left over for my host operating system. If you need the RAM, you nee...

Re: I have lost my faith in the Thinkpad Brand.

Most who use a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air use it because they want OS X. A lot of developers have moved to OSX thanks to the UNIX compliance, but a large number of them buy the Air and replace OSX with the OS of their choice. The Air and Retina MBP are both excellent machines in their own right. fo...

Re: T420 build quality. Is it good after all?

I've had a varying experience with the T420. I bought it from a Brick-and-mortar store (J&R in NYC) because i wanted to feel the product before i laid down the cash for it. My First T420 was a disaster-keyboard died, warping case, inexcusable service from Lenovo...it's chronicled in this thread - ht...

The yellow USB port supplies enough voltage to charge most devices while the computer is turned off. There are options in the BIOS and Thinkpad power manager to enable the system.

I have the same specs in a T420 with Optimus (i5-2520/8gb/128+256gb dual SSD) Try answering these questions>>> 0. did this behavior begin recently, or did it gradually come to this molasses-like state? 1. are you running an antivirus - not the silly Norton nonsense included with the system, but some...

Did you post this on 4chan's /g/ board last night   ??? I'll give you the same suggestion I gave there. Raise hell with the support people. Even if the trackpoint and trackpad issues are software related, the DC power jack is definitely a manufacturer defect. Thinkpad Power jacks are rea...

Re: about Replacement Hard drives...

X220 use 7mm (thickness) drives as oppose to 9mm, so you don't really have a many choices. I stand corrected. Clean installs of Windows from the Lenovo Recovery Partition or from the Recovery Disks they can send are not possible. however, you can download a genuine copy of your version of the OS fr...

I don't have recommendations for what brand of disk to buy, but I'm sure someone here will chime in with their experience. 1000 gigabyte / 1 terabyte laptop drives are available, but these drives are a non-standard 12mm thick as opposed to 9mm. 12mm laptop drives are not meant to go inside the X220,...

if virtual machines and virtualization are part of your required work, then the 3210 will not cut the mustard, as it won't support those features. the manufacturer's price differential between the 3320 and the 3360 is about $30. lenovo wants $55 for that. just as an FYI. put that $55 towards an SSD,...

A Caveat on System Restore - you can make backups manually using the Backup facility baked into Windows 7 (which is an excellent feature, by the way). What really needs to be turned off is 'system protection' the automated process that makes restore points to fall back on in case of failure. Norton ...

AFAIK on my system, Lenovo Airbag Protection seems to be SSD-aware. This is on the...

Check in the BIOS if you are booting from UEFI or Legacy BIOS. ACHI and UEFI are 2 settings crucial to Thinkpads and SSD Compatibility. your laptop's display cable appears to be damaged, or seems to have come undone from it's connector. The display itself also seems to have a bright spot in the right hand side, which I consider a defect(Lenovo may beg to differ) Also entirely possible that it is a Software / GPU problem, but those b...
