Re: need solid esata cable for my t410? Which type of cable you
Yes you can use both, the esata on the dock is independant, even Laptops without esata will have access to the esata connection via the dock. So you can transfer from esata on your laptop to esata on your dock. Esata speeds depends on the disk you are using. Normal HDD will max out at 80MB/S sustain...

T42 will not run hd footage with any editing suite, unless you think 1 fps is an efficient work environment.

Re: X220 review raised issues - have you experienced these?
In the HW32, we noticed quite early that the processor speed constantly changed between 3,2 to 2.8 GHz and 2.5 GHz down to 800 MHz Thats what its supposed to do, it's called speed stepping. Thats how laptops are supposed to perform. I wouldn't want a laptop that was always clocked at maximum. It wo...

Re: T420 display very poor.
I wouldn't suggest the 12" IPS display for anyone doing graphics work. I have X220T 12" IPS, its the worst display that I've ever seen for color accuracy. I'm sure its not from the same Apple Batch. The 12" IPS are the warmest displays that I've ever seen in my life on any laptop. The colors look li...

If you wanted a good display you should have gotten a w520 with FHD wide gamut display.

That expesscard can be used for a soundcard or a rendering io unit like a Matrox or a Red Rocket.
I wouldn't waste it on an external gpu, since the Quadro 2k is already pretty fast.

Your only solution is to get a series 3 dock with built in esata.
The esata on the dock is located in the rear of the unit, making it impossible to ever knock loose.

Re: Dock for W520 - Why not USB 3.0 ?
the docking station isn't the limitation. the W520's NEC/renesas USB 3.0 controller only has two channels and both are used up by the W520 itself. the dock would need a separate USB 3.0 chipset to meet your request and there's no channel to connect it. an external USB 3.0 hub might be an option but...

Re: Dock for W520 - Why not USB 3.0 ?
Cas Latency is the difference. The lower the number the better. In this case. The 69 dollar one is better. I would get 4 sticks of those. Remember don't mix DDR 1333 with DDR 1600 it will drop the speed to the lower model. If you want the full 1600 performance, then all four sticks must be 1600. Goo...

Re: Dock for W520 - Why not USB 3.0 ?
I'm currently using Corsair DDR 3 1333. You can go for the faster DDR 3 1600 but I'm not sure if it's going to be stable at that clock rate. PLus DDR 3 1600 is very expensive, so my suggestion is just get yourself a set 4x8gb DDR 3 1333. As for make and model. The cheapest ones are Corsair, and G Sk...

Re: t410 esata port performance eSATA I, eSATA II or eSATAIII ?
I've never gotten anymore than 250mb transfer rate out of my esata, but then again, it all depends on your source and input drives. In order to maximize the esata connection, you need to have two SSDs that can both do over 300mb read and write, only then can you saturate the esata bandwith. I've nev...

Get the T530 only if you don't care for the chiclet keyboard and other changes.
I think you also loose the Thinklight, and latches.
As far as speed goes, it will be more than 10% faster for sure.

You're making things way too complicated. Follow these instructions 1) Start rescue recover. Backup your entire C: drive to an USB drive. And make sure you tell rescue recover to make the USB disk bootable. 2) Remove your current HDD from the drive bay, so that Bios can only detect 1 drive. 3) Plug ...

Re: Dock for W520 - Why not USB 3.0 ?
Docks not made just for the W520, it works on almost all the current Gen Thinkpads, even the cheaper ones. Putting USB 3 would require a driver update for all the Thinkpads that use the dock, as Sandy bridge has no native USB 3. Even w520 doesn't come with native USB 3, its a third party add on card...

Re: SSD, Encryption, Trim, and Wear Leveling
A 7200rpm drive can do 80mb read and write assuming it's a latest model with decent cache. You'd be surprised how fast some of these new HDD are. I was writing some heavy data to my W520s 500GB HDD (7200rpm) from my msata SSD. I was seeing sustained speeds of 90-100mb/s. Not too shabby for spinning ...

Maybe you should send him your modded bios and see if that helps.

Re: SSD, Encryption, Trim, and Wear Leveling
Your drive doesn't support TRIM, you can check with crystaldiskinfo. First generation ssds like the X301 Samsung were never designed with TRIM. I had to spend like 400 bucks to upgrade to a 256 Kingston v180 to get trim for my X301. You need to use secure delete via BIOS or run Tony Trim on your dri...

Safe to leave Lenovo Turbo Boost always on?
I just realized recently that by turning on Turbo Boost, you can get some insane performance boosts on heavy duty CPU loads. I always thought it was just a useless gimmick to sell more laptops. Anyways, my question is is it safe to leave Turbo Boost always on, since it throttles the CPU fan to max w...
