Re: R60e IPS upgrade question
The R60 and R60e with Core CPUs use the 945GM chipset while the R60 and R60e with Celerons come with the 940GML chipset that don't play nice with the Core CPUs. The R500 all use the same chipset, which makes swapping CPUs more agreeable. If I recall correctly and I may not as it's been a while so th...

Re: R60e IPS upgrade question
Yes, this will work, but be advised if you decide that the panel looks great and you want to spend money upgrading the R60e after all, the Celeron R60e won't accept any other CPUs due to it using a different chipset. You'd need to swap the motherboard as well.

Re: WTB ThinkPad with 4:3 And XGA preferred
Just to let you know that I am not trying to argue it. I believe we're still in Los Estados Unidos and you're free to like whatever you want. I thought you might like a better screen, but your reasons for wanting a XGA LCD seem completely reasonable. Just spitballing here, but if you like the class...

Re: WTB ThinkPad with 4:3 And XGA preferred
Instead of buying a subpar XGA screen, why not get a better 15" SXGA+ or UXGA LCD that will offer you more contrast and wider viewing angles, then bumping up the DPI until it works for you? Bumping up the DPI works fairly well in Windows 10 or newer and Linux too.

Re: L490 i5 8365u vs T480 i7-8550u Performance
Anything else that's it useful to ask a seller without being petty? What the return policy is if you don't like it. I'd stick with the Ryzen 5 3500u if possible. That and the Core i5/i7 are fairly close in performance. I know the Zen2s are more expensive, but it never hurts to make an offer on eBay...

It'll likely be slower, but probably depends on the application/file. Anything that requires more throughput would make it slower, but presumably less so on small files.

Re: L490 i5 8365u vs T480 i7-8550u Performance
I don't believe the L490 offers AMD CPUs. To get them you'd need an E495, X395 or T495 to get them for the first gen, or X13, L13/14 or T14 for the Zen2 Thinkpads. I'd start looking for one with the Zen2. You may find something good at a price you like, but you'll never know unless you look. You can...

Re: L490 i5 8365u vs T480 i7-8550u Performance
Overall quality, like T vs E I think the most likely outcome, regardless of whether you buy a T, L or E, is it will give you years of faithful service. A notebook that travels a lot, giving it more opportunities to be dinged or dented, the T series may prove to be a bit more robust, but if you have...

I doubt there's much of practical difference between SATA and NVMe. How about the Western Digital Black²? Plus, it's era appropriate.

Re: L490 i5 8365u vs T480 i7-8550u Performance
True, though it does depend on which CPU one chooses. A lower or mid tier ThinkPad will likely be more wallet friendly than a T series if that's what you're after. There doesn't seem to be much of a premium for the L14 Gen 1 over the T480, though that's always YMMV. Plus, the L14 isn't hamstrung wit...

Re: Can I change the keyboard?
Yes, you can swap the keyboard. Lenovo used to have multiple suppliers. I presume they still do. Perhaps as a place to start you could take the keyboard out to find the part number, so at least you don't get the same one if you decide to replace it. It's really hard for someone to tell someone else ...

Re: Best new Win11 ThinkPad for a 15-year user of an x200 ??
The issue is not building the keyboard, but rather getting everyone to agree on what perfect is.
There's other ThinkPad keyboards out there. You just got to keep trying until you find the one.

I'd make the recovery media in case you want to put it back, but personally I prefer a clean install so I can get it the way I like it and then make an image, which I can then put back if needed.

The T480 is now six years old. Much will depend on what kind of shape battery is in.

You can get the ThinkPad L14, which offers the low power LCD as well, though I don't know how difficult is to find, but has two upgradeable memory slots. There won't be much of a practical difference between the L14 and T14 in my opinion.

It's true upgrading from one dual core to another likely doesn't make much of a practical difference, but adding a couple cores will offer a significant performance advantage as the system ages.
