Re: Long term (~2+ years) review: Economy

I met someone from San Francisco last summer. I said to her "If you don't mind my asking, how much are you paying in rent?". She told me "We got a super good deal, we're only paying $4,000 a month". I replied "You are one lucky [censored]". She said her husband was an engineer. Perhaps that's how th...

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?

I bought one of these for my R60 and seem to recall it being at less than 50% of capacity after six months. The bay battery always discharges first, so it wears quickly. I say you're better off buying the larger battery as it doesn't degrade near as fast and sticks out the back, which makes for a co...

Yup, you're right. I thought they were still using PATA for the opticals on the T400, but they must have switched after the T61.

Re: Blu-ray reader or burner for T60 / T61 series

I don't believe they made blu ray drives for the T60 or T61, but a few years later, they did offer one on the T400. The part number is 42T2517. I believe it is a 9.5mm Pata drive, which should fit a T60 or T61, though I have no firsthand knowledge. My guess would be if you can find one, it'll be exp...

In my experience all SSDs are fast and have never noticed a difference between any of them performance wise.

I believe the M.2 slot in the T440S can have a WWAN card or 2242 SSD, but not both.

Re: Corona-COVID-19 virus statistics and HOW is it affecting you.. what are you doing..?

The business where I work is shut down until the end of the month, but fortunately with pay. To count my blessings, I can afford to hang out for a while, but am concerned about my family, friends and co-workers who have rent, mortgages and car payments to make. We''ll be OK in the short term, but we...

Re: upgrading or at least updating my T410

Cool, I never knew about the Ultrabay adaptor. So can I use that to clone the old hd right onto the new ssd? Never done that before Cloning onto a new SSD from another drive rarely works well in my experience, though I'm certainly no expert on the matter and haven't tried for a while. Once you've i...

Do they still only offer 1-year, non-upgradable warranties on their outlet units? I thought they relaxed that a few years back, though my degree of certainty about said statement is probably less than 25%. I solve this problem by purchasing with Citibank credit card. Most Citibank cards give an aut...

Re: X1 Carbon 7th gen choice

Only applications that need more processing power and can take advantage of the extra cores will benefit from bumping up to a quad. There's not many of those on your list. If you're happy with the T460s that's a pretty good argument to wait if you don't want to spend the money. You could look at las...

The difference in CPUs won't make a lick of difference, given the usage. I think the most significant difference is the weight, where the X1C has the advantage, though not hugely so.

Worth mentioning is the fact that the mSATA slot is limited to SATA-II speed, whereas the Ultrabay and 2.5" SATA bay are SATA-III.
Only running tasks that place a heavy load on the controller would there be any discernible difference.

I have a 120GB Mushkin M.2 SSD in my HP along with a 2TB Seagate platter drive. I'd like to get a 2TB SSD for the main bay of my notebook. A 1TB M.2 SSD from a reputable brand is probably $100-125. If you add the M.2 SSD to increase storage and keep your current SSD, you won't have to re-install the OS.

I am comfortable with 100% scaling at 14" FHD; would be more comfortable with 125%, but keep it at 100% to avoid blurriness issues when going between different external screen setups.
The only computer I have with more than one screen is my desktop, which has two identical LCDs.

That was at native resolution. Eventually, I bumped it up to 125 scaling to make it easier on the eyes, but that kind of made it like 1600x900 screen.

Re: Lenovo CES 2019

While I can use a 14" 1080 screen at native resolution for a while, fatigue sets in pretty quick. I like the 17" FHD screen I had, but 6.5 pounds is too heavy for a portable notebook in 2019. I'm hoping FHD on a 15" strikes a nice balance.

Re: Dell to release a new XPS 15 model with a 4K OLED panel in March

Will they have better luck than Lenovo with OLED? The OLEDs did not last long in ThinkPads, they quickly developed tearing and other problems needing multiple replacements, they all suffer from it, to a scale like the historical T410s vertical bands problem. As always with new technology, it offers...

I liked the UXGA screens. The one portrait mode was just above my line of sight, which made it easy to use. My biggest issue with them was the dimming. Had they been LED screens, I'd probably still be using them and saved myself $425. Previous to getting the UXGAs, my monitor was a 19" tube running ...

Re: POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

Since like 2006, I've had a pair of Dell 20” UXGA monitors atop my desktop. I run one in portrait mode or 1200x1600, which is good for internet and office, but they had seemed to have dimmed a bit since I bought them in 2012 due to the bulb technology in them. I happened to find a pair of Dell 25” W...
