Re: X1 Carbon "Generations"
I think the X1 was originally part of the X series family, but this changed after the X1 Carbon Gen 6, when the it became its own "X1" series. BTW X series chassis design used to lag behind the T series, but interestingly, this has reversed in recent years: - X13 Gen 2 introduced an updated design l...

Re: X1 Carbon "Generations"
Yes, the X1 Carbon Gen 4 is the odd one out. It is indeed based on the X1 Yoga Gen 1, which is why it has this very un-typical hinge design for an X1 Carbon. It is also the X only generation where X1 Yoga and X1 Carbon would essentially share a chassis, although they would start sharing the mainboar...

Re: P14s Gen 5 intel: first impressions
Getting rid of the dGPU option was a prerequisite for restoring the dual DIMM on the T series, as not having the dGPU freed up valuable board space. I don't think the dGPU T series were that popular anymore anyway, especially outside of China (the Chinese market apparently really likes dGPUs, hence ...

Re: 2025 Lineup: will the T14s come with DIMM slots this year?
It is a typo, RAM is on board (Arrow Lake, AMD and Snapdragon) or on package (Lunar Lake) on the T14s Gen 6.
T14/T16 continue with DIMM slots (except for the Lunar variant).

Re: P14s Gen 5 intel: first impressions
The P14s G5 is an interesting case. As you noted, it is based on the T14p, but why? Lenovo stopped making T series ThinkPads with dedicated GPUs. Which means that the P14s G5 couldn't be based on the T14 G5, they had to use a different design. Unfortunately, this machine is made by Lenovo China, whi...

Re: A history of Lenovo's docking solutions - semi-random sampling
Are you referring to Lenovo's docks or some others? I would be curious to find out which LAN controller they have. Yes, this one for example: https://support.lenovo.com/ma/en/solutions/pd500503-thinkpad-universal-thunderbolt-4-dock-overview-and-service-parts As it says in the description: "Lenovo U...

Re: A history of Lenovo's docking solutions - semi-random sampling
Thank you for this observation. I noticed that the USB-C ports on the dock are not TBT, and didn't take the next logical step, to conclude that this is a corollary of TBT not being passed through the dock connector at all. It's a pity, although understandable. However, i'm curious whether it would ...

Re: A history of Lenovo's docking solutions - semi-random sampling
Nice work! One thing that always bugged me about the mechanical docks is that Lenovo would often place the fan exhaust at the top left corner, exactly where the docking had its corner guide, impairing cooling. Puzzling design choice. Just put the guide on the other side, most people are right handed...

He is probably dead. In the German ThinkPad forum, one of the admins had a last contact with him in December 2018 when he apparently lived in a hospice. So the theory is that he died in early 2019, though no one knows 100 % for sure.

Re: Current ThinkPads with larger key-travel?
All models released since 2023 have no more than 1.5 mm of key travel, same as your X1 Carbon Gen 9.
Of course, key travel is not the only thing that influences typing experience, not every 1.5mm travel keyboard will feel the same

Re: T490: out, T16 Gen3: in
Note that the T16 Gen 3 (like all other newly redesigned models) has moved the fan exhaust to the back instead of the side as before. This is the reason for the long rubber strip instead of two separate rubber feet in the back. That rubber strip creates a separation between the fan intake on the bot...

Re: T14 Gen 1 - Gen 4
I've just learnt that L14 gen 2 is 2.5" sata drive capable. Now I have to reconsider, this is tempting! Retaining my current 4TB drive and RAM would make it a much cheaper upgrade then T14. I guess I need to touch both computers to properly compare them. The L14 can only take 2.5 inch drives if it ...

Re: New favourite: P14s Gen 5 (intel)
Its one of the most exciting models of this year's lineup, for sure. I hope we see more models move to the 14.5 inch size in the future, as that provides a really nice balance (same screen height as 15.6 inch 16:9, same screen width as 14 inch 16:9 = ideal to display two documents side by side)

Re: Does Thinkpad P1 gen 7 support 8TB M.2 SSD:s?
I just saw in the Thinkpad P1 gen 6's spec document https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_P1_Gen_6/ThinkPad_P1_Gen_6_Spec.pdf page 3 says "• M.2 2280 SSD up to 8TB, 4TB each " and "up to 4TB M.2 2280 SSD". That is your misinterpretation of the spec sheet. The specs just list th...

Re: P1 gen 7, the end of an era
I just wonder why did they keep the trackpoint, since now, with no physical buttons it is barely functional. The top of the haptic trackpad is clickable and provides the same function as the dedicated TrackPoint buttons. You even have the small dots there for the middle button. So the function of t...

Re: What are the best X1 Carbon (generation) Thinkpads?
@mikemex, X1 Carbon G9 has 1.5mm of travel, not 1.35mm. Also, speakers may not matter to you, but if you compare the speakers of the X1 Carbon G9 vs your earlier models, you will probably find that the X1 Carbon G9 is much better in this regard. This is also one of the weaknesses of the X1 Carbon G6...

Such projects are always fascinating. One more thing you could do: The T470 had an optional Magnesium top cover. If I went the generic route for replacement batteries. Would they work in the X1 carbon? I want to make sure there is no chip technology allowing only genuine Lenovo Thinkpad batteries. Re: What are the best X1 Carbon (generation) Thinkpads?
ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 6 (2018) is considered a sweet spot: - 8th gen Quad Core CPUs (huge performance upgrade over X1 Carbon G5 and earlier) - Old 1.8 mm travel keyboards (newer models are 1.5 mm travel) - Windows 11 compatible (if you care about Windows) I would not bother with X1 Carbon Gen 4 or ...

At this point, I would request to get it exchanged for a ThinkPad P1 G6. Clearly, there is something wrong with your unit if it fails again and again.

Re: Similar keyboard feel to X1 Carbon 6?
Keyboard feel is subjective, and it varies from model to model and from keyboard to keyboard. After all, Lenovo sources their keyboard from multiple suppliers. So there is no answer here that can be 100 %. What is for certain is that none of the newest models will provide the same travel distance as...

No ThinkPad made after 2013 uses the old "regular" height TrackPoint. P50/P51 are close though, because they used the Low Profile TrackPoint, the first reduced height version. This is is still very close to the original one. P52 uses the Super Low Profile version where the TrackPoint stick has a dif...

Re: P50/P51/P52/P53 Buying Advice
I owned both the P50 and P51. I do not recommend either of these with the 4K screen, the Sharp screen used in these has some issues with an uneven backlighting. It is a shame, because the P50/P51 have excellent 2.1 mm travel keyboards. The ThinkPad P52, which is the model I would recommend, has a di...
