Re: Panic to upgrade from T42: Typing feel X220 vs. T420s

I went through this exact same decision, though for different reasons (I wanted something smaller than my T61 but didn't like the screen options on the 14's). I was also pretty apprehensive about the short palm rest, but it's absolutely no problem. If anything, I actually prefer the shorter palm res...

Re: My thoughts on Lenovo's changes to the Thinkpad products

I've been using Thinkpads since I had a work-issued 600 back in the late '90's, so I'm not exactly new to the brand. My assessment is pretty much the same as yours: I find that most of the changes are positive, and I find *most* of the criticism to be irrational and based on preserving some sort of ...

Re: New x30 line announced - thoughts on changes?

I've used the Chiclet keyboards on the X120e and the Edge 14". I have no complaint. But we need to lose the touchpad. That doesn't make much sense to me...you can always disable the touchpad--but you can't easily install one if it's not there? The fact is, a lot of people prefer the touchpad. After...

Re: e420s more feedback

I like this laptop. Two-finger scrolling is so jumpy, it's useless, better to use the trackpoint+button combo which is much more responsive. I replaced the Synaptics driver on an Edge E420 with these here : http://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll/downloads/list It's like using a brand new touchp...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

Backlighting is good for allowing one to see the keys in the dark. The ThinkLight does that equally well, and also serves as a miniature desk lamp. In my limited experience using a backlit keyboard, the backlit keyboard works much better for actually seeing the keys I need to see (namely the top ro...

Re: Installing Windows via USB on an X220 – please advise.

I used this guide here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/642274-hearsts-guide-clean-installing-windows-7-thinkpad.html#post8280806 I did the "clean install" which included downloading W7 from Digital River. 1) I don't know if the license is imbedded into your discs, but I don't believe it ...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

If you could point me to a good model of front / rear lights, that would be helpful. Based in Ireland . CatEye seems a popular brand here. Last I was in a brightly lit shop, it was difficult to judge. No doubt the one advantage to generators is that they're "set it and forget it", you'll never need...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

I concur with JaneL and the others. FWIW, see my post in http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=103398, which elaborates why I feel the same way. It reminds me of my bicycle. When I grew up in the 70s, my bike had 3 gears, a dynamo and a clamp for luggage. That was a common type back then....

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

a) If I have to use a crappy keyboard there's no reason for me to own a ThinkPad in the first place. why do you think the keyboard is "crappy"? I guess this is the crux of the issue for me. I've actually used it, and IMO it's much nicer to type on than my T61. As I see it, this isn't "change for th...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

Calling a long term tradition of quality and a proven work tool "retro-ironic aesthetic(s)" is kind of an insult. If you like huge touch pads for gestures, thats your choice, fine, but that is not a direct continuation of the Thinkpad standards, which are an trusty tool for work including an except...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

Yeah, there are valid concerns, like how removing the 7th row may impede productivity. Unfortunately, for each informative post, there are 17 more along the lines of: "Oh noes chiclets are here we are doomed!" "Screw this I'm going Apple/HP/Dell/Whatever!" "Bye bye ThinkPads you're no longer cool" ...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

How do you figure? Most of the worries on these forum have been about how typing would feel on the new keyboard style and about how the modified layout will affect productivity. These are performance, not aesthetics. I have heard very few people express any reservations about how the keyboard will ...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

Well, people have veeeeeeeeery strong opinions regarding traditional and chiclet keyboards. Think the PC vs. Mac phenomenon, or iOS vs. Android: the majority of debate really is not based on facts and experiences. Same here. Indeed, I'm finding that out. Of course, I also don't get the emoti...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

I’m not aware of any requirement on the internet to have anything beyond an opinion to comment, either positively or negatively, about a topic. And I agree with your assessment of the Edge keyboard. One can certainly comment (I never meant to imply otherwise). I understand asking questions about th...

Re: T430 Chicklet Keys

I have to wonder just how many people complaining about the chiclet keyboard have actually used the Lenovo keyboard? For some background, I've spend the last 4 years or so on a T61. The Nvidia-equipped motherboard just died a fiery death, and my back-up laptop was dead as well. So, I ended up laptop...
