Re: Lenovo Preferred Pro Keyboard vI vs II vs something else?

There are many different types of mechanical keyboards. They can be characterized as: "clicky" - produce a click at or near actuation point "quiet" - produce no audible click at actuation "tactile" - pressure increases near actuation point "non-tactile" - pressure is constant to which I would add: "...

Re: Triple boot?

There are a lot of issues with what you are trying to do. Ubuntu 18.04 is a new release, and is a little buggy. Windows tends to clobber grub2 (the Linux boot loader) on updates. None of these operating systems are particularly good at coexisting. You were right to remove the msata when installing o...

Re: W520 Motherboard Replacement Advice Required

If I understand your situation correctly, your machine works properly with Intel graphics.
If you are running Windows, you might consider downloading Belarc Advisor and
printing out everything that it finds about your machine. It might be useful after
you replace the MB.

Re: W520 Motherboard Replacement (Consolidated)

There used to be a per machine parts lookup page on the Lenovo web site, but I think it's gone now. Someone may have downloaded it somehow. If you look in the hardware maintenance manual, which you should be able to find on their site, the FRU parts numbers for about a dozen or so W520 motherboards ...

Re: W520 Motherboard Replacement Advice Required

You might be better off just buying a used unit from someone on this forum or e-bay. I'd go with one with a late-model motherboard, which you can determine from the CPU type. A 2760QM or 2860QM are both indicators of late-model W520s. You should be able to get a good unit for < $500(US) - I have thr...

ECC is definitely desirable if you care about the integrity of your data, but if you're just playing
games on it, then it probably wouldn't matter. File systems and operating system are designed
to work with ECC.

Re: T420 or T420s?

Forgot to mention that the T420s has usb 3.0 + 2.0, while the T420 has esata-p + usb 2.0. Esata is quite fine as long as you are willing to get the right enclosures, cables, etc. The T420s will not be able to use the usb 3.0 port on a mini-dock which is so equipped, for that I think that you need a ...

I use both. T420 has the advantage of better availability of third party batteries (i.e., 9-cell),
but screen upgrades are easier for the T420s (AFAIK, but this may have changed.)

Re: metal polish to remove scratches from IPS screen X220 tablet

If your screen has thin, well-defined scratches, then you can usually take them out with a pencil eraser.
But if you have smudges, then I don't think that there is anything that you can do except replace the screen.

Re: Speed difference W510 i7 720QM vs W520 2720QM

Since this thread is semi-active again, I thought I'd point out that the OP has so little ram in his W510 that this fact alone accounts for sluggish performance. Browsers like Chrome are particularly memory hungry. I'd recommend upgrading any of the older machines (W510, W520, W701) to 32GB ram (whi...

Re: Operating system cannot be found, Cannot boot from any device w510

It could be a lot of things. In particular, it sounds like you have puppy linux installed on a hard drive, so booting off a dvd or cdrom doesn't indicate that your hard drive is O.K. One place to start would be to do some form of hard drive diagnostics on your hard drive. If your drive checks out, I...

Re: t450s - trackpoint not working after keyboard replacement

Sometimes the trackpoint goes bad, either by failing completely, or by drifting uncontrollably.
However, the fact that the 3 buttons are also dead probably means that a connection somewhere
is bad, or that part of the cable itself got damaged.

Re: Quad Core in T420 - Disable Cores to stay within TDP limits?

The TDP of a T420 might depend upon whether it has integrated graphics, or Nvidia.
I believe that they share a heatsink in the T420, so going with the HD3000 might
be a compensating factor.

Re: Tips on buying a T420/T420s/or T430?

The T420s is interesting because it has usb 3.0 and can be upgraded to an IPS FHD display. The T420 is a great machine, but I must have one of the very few which upgraded to FHD without the flickering problem. The T430s is also supposedly upgradeable to FHD (or so I have heard.) This is all pretty silly. How maintainable can a laptop be when the battery is glued in,
as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fupkPz55tUo

I'll bet that the ram is soldered in, too. Not such a smart thing to do
with a component that has a 7% annual failure rate!

It could be throttling because of a temperature problem. What temps are the CPU (and possibly also GPU) running?
Also, there may be an option in the BIOS to disable turbo boost.

Re: Win7 Pro 64 / Linux Mint

Depends where the boot loader is.
What I usually do is to boot off a drive in the Ultrabay.
When I install an OS, I remove all other drives from the computer.
If you have Windows installed on your internal drive bay,
you can copy it to a drive in the ultrabay with Macrium Reflect.
