Re: Dire warning for FRUIT, to finally start making HMMs

This is all pretty silly. How maintainable can a laptop be when the battery is glued in,
as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fupkPz55tUo

I'll bet that the ram is soldered in, too. Not such a smart thing to do
with a component that has a 7% annual failure rate!

This goes to show that Scottish thieves are much more discriminating than their American cousins...

You could just pick up a W500. This is your chance to "upgrade."
I've always noticed that my W500 has a dim screen, suitable only for indoor use.
Was this the case with your R500?

my W520 as I discovered accidentally the other day.)

Don't know if this is new, but the board index now lists:

"W500/510/520 and W700/710 series specific matters only"

as the description for one of the board areas. Is this new,
or have I been missing this for some time? In any case,
now I want to hunt down a "W710."

It could be throttling because of a temperature problem. What temps are the CPU (and possibly also GPU) running?
Also, there may be an option in the BIOS to disable turbo boost.

Since this thread was started, I procured a precision m7510 to use because I need ECC;
I'd definitely be interested in such a site, but how would it be possible?
As someone has posted, Dell doesn't provide FRU numbers in their manuals.

Depends where the boot loader is.
What I usually do is to boot off a drive in the Ultrabay.
When I install an OS, I remove all other drives from the computer.
If you have Windows installed on your internal drive bay,
you can copy it to a drive in the ultrabay with Macrium Reflect.

There is nothing like a good IPS, but you can fool around with the gamma to get a TN screen like the one you have to have better blacks. It'll make your text look punchier, but you'll need to undo it to be able to see image midtones and shadows. On linux, you can set the gamma with the "xgamma" comm...

Re: eSATA power on both T410 and T420.

You'll need an "esata-p" cable to supply power to your enclosure, as opposed to an "esata" cable.
Also, you're better off with a "dumb" esata enclosure which does not spin down the drive,
there is less to go wrong.

Don't know yet about cooling and other issues, but I can definitely say that a Sandy Bridge laptop without Nvidia graphics is easier to set up than one with them. If you have a W510 with a quadcore, it should have 4 slots, and it will take 32G of ram. (I have one with this configuration.) I also have a W701, with the same generation of CPU, and have upgraded it to 32G. In all likelihood, 8GB sodimms were not available when the machines were released, so that'...

Re: Is W510 to T430 an upgrade?

They are 2 completely different types of machines, and each can do things that the other cannot. The T430 with a dual core is probably equivalent to the i7-720QM in the W510, but because the W510 can take 32gb of ram it is more suitable for certain tasks, such as software development. You could alwa...

Computrace probably injected something into the boot sector, or something loaded by the boot sector.
You didn't mention whether it was GPT or MBR, but it probably does something sneaky at boot,

I'd be interested in hearing if a W520 with a 1000M can be upgraded to a 55W fan
since there are so many motherboards specified in the HMM. The HMM lists different
motherboards for 2000M and 1000M machines (as well as for many other options,
such as RAID.)

You can put a drive in the ultrabay with this model, but you might want to consider
leaving open the option of putting an ultrabay battery in there, which is
possible with this model.

The main battery is actually pretty limited in capacity, at something like 44WH.

I just bought one of your machines, and am wondering what kind of error
you get when booting with a 170W supply. I looked the machine up and
Lenovo apparently sold them with both 170w and 230w supplies; perhaps
you only need the 230w for an XM cpu?

Here's my $.02: There is mechanical durability (how well it functions under adverse conditions/abuse.) They vary by model, but none of the Thinkpads are really MILSPEC. Sandy Bridge was a big jump in terms of CPU, and gains have been incremental since then. The only reason why one might consider a more modern machine would be ...

Just as an aside, I've been playing with a Skylake for the last month, and have found that it has taken quite a while to become well-supported under Linux. You'll need to run a late 4.8 kernel and fiddle with some parameters to get the power management to run properly. If you want acceptable power c...

You might start by downloading a program that will list everything on your system, since you have a CTO.
