Re: Kryonaut is no longer my favourite Thermal Paste

On laptop CPUs I don't use the "center dot" method, but spread the paste as much as I can. Maybe Thermal Grizzly Aeronaut could work? It's less viscous compared to Kryonaut. Also, is it newly-bought paste, or is it old stock? Some say pastes degrade over time, so you shouldn't hold on to them for to...

Re: Memory interchange matrix for T series ThinkPads

IIRC the T530 requires a minimum DDR3 speed of 1333, so the 1066 ones from the T500/510 era won't work. My X220 has shown itself to be flexible: I've used 1066, 1333 and (DDR3L) 1600 (the last one thanks to the unlocked BIOS) without much trouble. I'll check my X60sF's RAM speed when I find the time...

Re: X220i Fan Error

New fan doesn't give a pulse. I tried with the old fan by blowing on it and it does give a pulse. No pulse on the 3rd and 4th wires? I was thinking it could be wired incorrectly (the PWM drive and RPM sense wires were mistakenly switched on the connector). But if there's no pulse on either wire the...

It says that ms issued a "compatibility block" on 9 of the 10 major issues. WTF is a "compatibility block", is it a sw switch in the winblows update that will stop the normally forced auto install of updates for some reason? Blocks on realtek, synaptics audio, intel integrated graphics... Isn't tha...

Re: Converting X201 to SSD - Need FRU 42W8019, 42W7888, or compatible alternative

Oh snap! So the metal part of 7mm and 9mm caddies is approximately the same? And the ideal solution is a metal part from any caddy at all + those 7-9mm step-up rails (so to say)? The metal part is mostly the same. Heck, I managed to use the metal HDD tray from a T42 in an X61T once. I see.. if you ...

Re: X220i Fan Error

Can you check if the new fan outputs an RPM sense pulse? You could connect the 3rd wire (or 4th, I don't know which pin is the RPM and the PWM drive signal on this fan) to an oscilloscope and then give it 3v, then 5v.

While waiting you can surely ... go ghetto with cardboard, paper, and tape too as a temporary measure :) In fact sometimes to save space people take their SSD our of its casing and just stick the SSD PCB onto the SATA connector inside their Thinkpad. Not sure what the best way is to prevent SSD fro...

Those are for 1.8" MicroSATA SSDs, which is an obsolete form factor. Those were used in the X300/301 and T400s/410s. Common SATA SSDs like the Samsung 860 EVO you mentioned are 2.5" and are the same size as laptop HDDs; the only difference is that they're 7mm tall as opposed to the 9.5mm tall HDDs s...

Yesterday, the X220 wouldn't lock onto the dock. I opened the dock and found that the plastic post that held the spring in place had broken off. Not the actual image (was to grumpy to take pics). It's the small tension spring near the front, a little to the right: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZOPJtG7r...

Re: 14 inch replacement for X230

Looks like what you need is a laptop with a drop in IPS upgrade. You already have the Full HD IPS screen from the failed t420 mod, right? Is it still working? If yes, then all you need is a T440 and the FHD LCD cable-- that's because the T420 FHD mod uses the FHD IPS screen used in the T440.

Re: "Acceptable" CPU Temps?

My personal creed is "the lower the better". High temperatures shorten the lifespan of electronics, so it's worthwhile to make the effort to lower them. Undervolting the CPU yields some benefits. It's been a long time since i've used a T42 so I don't have a detailed memory of the temperature range, ...

Re: [Medium Pictures] X230 not recognizing genuine "44" 4-Cell Battery

Definitely a dead battery. The lithium cells may have deteriorated while in storage for a long time, and trying to charge it in that state can be dangerous (it may heat up and cause a fire). The battery pack has protection circuits that preemptively "kill" the battery (prevent it from charging) if i...

Re: Help: sd card reader much slower in Linux on T430

It's a Ricoh card reader, right? There is something strange about that generation and Linux. Somehow, when Linux boots, the device ID of the controller changes from E823 to E822 (E822 does not support UHS-I, so it's limited to ~20Mbps). This sounds like something in the BIOS's ACPI tables, most lik...

To explain: The 1-3-3-1 beep code (one beep, pause, 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause, 1 beep) denotes a memory error, which is expected when you power up the laptop without any RAM installed. If you do not hear this error code, then it means the system encountered an error even before the RAM is teste...

The RAM, not the HDD.

My aunt's X60 suddenly displayed an NMI error. Due to the lockdown I couldn't go to her and try to figure out the issue. She asked if I had any spare laptops to lend her, and I ended up sending my trusty X61 (designated backup machine) to her via motorcycle courier. Of course, I had to remove its HD...
