Re: T420: Linux Driver for Modem (RJ45 Dialup)

IIRC most Thinkpad modems have Conexant chips. There's a Linux driver at http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ , where the free version was limited to 14.4 kbps, with a paid license to get full speed. But since dialup modems are now obsolete, the company has ceased further development and released the fu...

Re: X220 Tablet LCD replacement

Well we live and learn, and what I now know is that the LCD was fine, but that what I am guessing is the digitiser had cracked. Is any of this worth salvaging? FRUs? In the meantime I have a very poor condition but complete lid assembly I will fit to the base to see whether the thing is working. Pr...

I've already opened up a 701C keyboard. I can post pictures of the matrix.
I'm not sure I can figure out the matrix with just pictures. It's best to have the keyboard at hand and use a multimeter in continuity test mode to verify.

Re: Why do people keep going back to Thinkpad?

If someone could wire up the keyboard to USB it would be very helpful. I can handle the rest, I have the display set up (iPad 9.7" 2048x1536 running off an adapter that uses DisplayPort and USB) and the hardware will be an Intel NUC That's the same display I imagined would like to fit inside....

AFAIK all the screens for the W520 are LED-backlit. Also, you cannot swap from CCFL to LED backlights without changing the LCD cable and/or the inverter board (LED backlights don't use inverters in the first place, and run on DC), so that's ruled out already.

Thx for your reply Axur. You are right - they seem to be exactly the same, but what about GPU/motherboard compatibility etc? Although unlikely it might be the T520 may not be able to support the 1920 panel? According to Thinkwiki , some models of the T520 have a 1920x1080 screen. :D Also, I've read...

AFAIK The T520 and W520 use the same chassis, which means many parts are the shared between the two.

Grab a copy of the T520/W520 Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) as it contains the parts listing and disassembly instructions. You can use the HMM link at the top of this forum's page.

Re: X230 left click, middle click , and right click on the trackpoint doesent work.

Either touchpad or Trackpoint is malfunctioning-- the two share one PS/2 port, so when one misbehaves, the other is also affected. What to try: Disconnect the touchpad cable from the system board (the the battery and charger are disconnected). Consult the X230 Hardware Maintenance Manual for instruc...

Re: x240 - trackpoint/trackpad problems and backlight keyboard support

The touchpad and Trackpoint share the same PS/2 port, so if one malfunctions, the other is also affected.

Most likely it's the Trackpoint that's malfunctioning after you spilled coffee on the keyboard. So disconnect its cable and check if the touchpad acts normally again.

To be fair, the X220i i3 isn't that far off the i5's performance. It's still a dual-core CPU with Hyperthreading/SMT like the i5, with a respectable 2.1GHz clock speed (compared to the 2.5GHz i5 2520M). Unless it's the ULV Core i3, which is only 1.4GHz. :x

Linux sets the BIOS time to UTC. I suppose your time zone is 4 hours away from it?

This can be a problem when dual-booting Linux and Windows, where BIOS time is set to local time. There's a registry setting to make Windows interpret BIOS time to UTC.

How could there be the wrong resistor in there? Why would there be a resistor at all in the first place?? The laptop measures the resistor inside the connector. Different wattage chargers have different resistors. In the old type (round plug), 9.5-10k ohms means 65w, and 0 ohms disconnected means 9...

If your schoolwork is just basic typing/document editing, and you can use a non-Windows OS, you might be able to make it work. If your schoolwork is more demanding, I'd get something newer. IIRC the T500 keyboard is supplied by 3 different manufacturers (NMB, Alps, and Chicony). There's a high likelihood that the keys from one manufacturer are not compatible with those from the others. I don't think he is specifically looking for an XGA screen that's "drop-in" compatible; it seems he just prefers XGA to SXGA+. This is surely possible, as there are definitely XGA IPS screens that were used in X4x/X6x Tablets, and people have used them in mods. Perhaps that what the OP intended. St...

IIRC there are 3 different manufacturers for the keyboards, and there's a fair chance that the keycaps are different between them, especially with regards to the scissor mechanism underneath.
