Re: substitute p8400 with a better cpu...

Do you want it to be an even better room heater? Get the T9600, T9900. Not sure if the X9100 works.

Otherwise, stick to the P series (P8600, P8700, P8800).

Further Debian Buster (RC1) adventures on the prodigal son: Trackpoint settings and udev Udev rules syntax seems to have changed since Debian Stretch. My old /etc/udev/rules.d/10-trackpoint.rules file doesn't work anymore: ACTION="add" SUBSYSTEM=="input", ATTR{name}=="*TrackPoint*", ATTR{device/sens...

Re: List of (postclassic) Thinkpad models and quick recap in here ?

To add to that, the T540p and W540 are among the last Thinkpads to have socketed (meaning upgradable) CPUs. Those of succeeding generations have sodlered CPUs which makes upgrading unfeasible.

Re: Is an NVMe SSD (theoretically) possible on an X61?

I made an ugly dual HDD hack for my old X61 a few years ago: https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=114432#p735315 Tapped into the SATA interposer card to add a bootable mSATA card, then used a mPCIE->USB3->SATA adapter that was wired back into the HDD bay for a 2nd drive. Heat problem we...

Re: Is an NVMe SSD (theoretically) possible on an X61?

If you want a dual HDD/SSD in an X61, just get a WD Black2(squared) drive. 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 1 9.5mm drive. Wasn't that discontinued due to compatibility issues, as it uses some kind of internal SATA port multiplier that doesn't work with a fair number of systems? Reading the reviews... is there ...

Re: Is an NVMe SSD (theoretically) possible on an X61?

You (under a different username) discussed this already a year ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/6s0ilq/msata_ssd_in_x61s_is_it_possible/ There was no mention of NVMe in that thread, just mSATA. We already know that mSATA won't work on the X6x mPCIe slots, so I was wondering if NVMe (...

Re: Is an NVMe SSD (theoretically) possible on an X61?

Theoretically, maybe. But even if you did, it would require reworking the socket Reworking? Maybe a PCB with edge contacts for both slots, with a flush M.2 socket like this one could work. what are you gaining? Racking my brain trying to find a hybrid storage (SSD + HDD) setup for the X60/61 family...

Is an NVMe SSD (theoretically) possible on an X61?

Let's set aside the BIOS boot issue for the moment.

We have 2 PCIe x1 lanes via the WLAN and WWAN ports.

Is it possible to link those 2 together and use them to connect an M.2 2242 NVMe SSD?

Or will the PCIe v1.1 bandwidth of 250 MB/s per lane make it moot?

1. Buy another one of the same model and transfer the working parts like RAM, HDD and/or SSD

2. Buy a different model that can use as much of the same transferable parts.

Those are the options that come to mind.

Re: Windows 10 Now Require a Minimum of 32GB Storage Space -- April 2019

When my (relatively cheap) phone has more space than a laptop...well something is seriously wrong with the laptop. 32GB of storage? I mean my T42p came with twice that from the factory in 2005! It's probably the same as the N22 Chromebook but with Windows shoehorned in. Well, they bought it without...

I've just completed undervolting the X61. I'm going to explain my CPU undervolting (and testing) method, and splitting it into parts because I realize it would be too long for a singe post. It can be described as a "bottom-up" approach, as it begins at the second-to-the-lowest clock speed rather tha...

Re: Windows 10 Now Require a Minimum of 32GB Storage Space -- April 2019

One of my clients has two Lenovo N22 mini-laptops with only 32GB SSD/eMMC soldered to the system board-- they're practically Chromebooks with Win 8 bolted on. An in-place Win 10 upgrade is impossible. They have to use external HDDs to shuffle documents in and out because the free space is too small.

A prodigal son has returned (a spare X61 loaned to sister)

My youngest sister upgraded to an X220 recently, and because of that the X61 she used before was returned to me. It had a backlight issue, which was solved by transplanting a spare lid assembly (salvaged from my cousin's dead X60). :D I put in a spare 1TB HDD (it was retired by my brother due to a s...

If the Fan Error message doesn't end with the X61 board automatically shutting down, then it's referring to the second fan. IIRC the error can be bypassed by pressing Esc, but it sure makes for annoying startups.

RT2571WF is a USB device. I think the WLAN slot of the X61 series does not have USB lanes? Try putting the card in the WWAN slot and check lsusb . Haven't thought of that possibility. But yeah, IIRC the WLAN slot does not have USB signals wired in as you suspected. I remember reading the schematics...
