Re: Running X230 off ultrabase only

I use a 90w charger with my X220 with no battery. I get full clock speed without any issues. :D
The X230 will behave the same way.

What's the poop on this? I would like to roll back to Windows 7 Pro on my new Dell, but I don't think this is possible with a ninth generation Intel CPU.
IIRC it usually due to Intel not bothering to write Win 7 drivers on newer hardware.

Can the fan RPM be altered? To go beyond the fan controls you'll need to reprogram the embedded controller, which isn't easy.

BTW, have you cleaned the heatsink and lubricated the fan?

IMo it's best to disable UEFI and Secureboot, and stick to Legacy BIOS mode. I don't know how good the UEFI support of major Linux distros are, but sticking to tried and true legacy mode wouldn't hurt.

Re: X201 RAM Upgrade problem

The naming system is like: PC 3 L- 12800 Number in boldface : RAM type. No number before the hyphen means DDR1; 2 for DDR2, 3 for DDR3, etc. An "L" after that means it's a low voltage version. This first appeared in DDR3L, as its operating voltage (1.35v) is lower than regular DDR3 (1.5v) Number wit...

You can edit the config file for tpfan to have a more aggressive fan profile.
You can also try undervolting the CPU to reduce temps.

Do you need to need to change the thermal paste? If you bought that T440s new back in 2013-2014, and haven't done any sort of maintenance, then yes you need to.. If you bought it used more than 2 years ago, and haven't done any sort of maintenance, then yes it's good idea to do so. If you just bough...

Re: T410 core i5 m520 vs t430 Core i3-3120M 2.5GHz worth changing?

T430i is basically a T430 but with slower CPUs. To be honest an Ivy Bridge i3 is no slouch either, and since it's a socketed CPU, you can easily upgrade to a dual-core i5/i7 or ever a quad-core i7.

The T430 also has native USB 3.0 ports, more capable built-in graphics, and 16GB max RAM.

Re: What about x270 ?

Still OK despite not being IPS. Specs look good. It's only 2 generations behind the current model, so that's a plus. The X220's biggest weakness (compared to the X270) is the Intel HD 3000 graphics-- this is something I've noticed when trying to play some Windows games via Wine-- the lack of OpenGL ...

Re: What about x270 ?

The price looks good. Does it have an IPS screen. If yes, the price is great.

You might need to get used to the 6-row keyboard layout.

It's lighter and faster than the X220, that's for sure.

Re: [SOLVED] 750C serial port max bit rate?

That's a strange finding indeed. The only idea that comes to mind is some kind of packet timeout issue due to the slow (but not too slow) 19.2-38.4 kbit/sec speed. 115 kbit/sec is the usual maximum for serial ports using the 16550A UART (or functional equivalent). I remember maxing out at this speed...

Re: Thinkpad 600, Win2k, and the curse of the disappearing FM Synth...

Windows 2000 uses WDM drivers while W98SE can use either VXD or WDM. In most cases, the WDM driver for 98SE and 2k are the same (I remember collecting various drivers for the Crystal 4236B/4237B when I still had that sound card).

Re: Does the T440p fan run all the time?

I don't have a T440p, but have experience with testing other Thinkpad models without a keyboard installed or have the fan clearly visible in some way. On power-on the fan spins for a second (to check if it works properly) and then stop if the temperature is low enough --usually if it's the first tim...

Re: Does the T440p fan run all the time?

The fan is controlled by an embedded controller than constantly monitors a few temperature sensors. Have you used a hardware monitoring program to read the temps and fan speed?

I'm trying to jog my memory of the Crystal 4236B sound card in our Pentium I desktop almost 20 years ago. From what I remember, the WDM driver prefers the software wavetable synth that comes with Windows 2000 (this may be the same with Windows 98), which is probably why it disables the hardware FM s...

Isn't this simply hardware failure? I mean it's around 20 years old by now. I've seen a much newer (non-Thinkpad) laptop have its entire audio subsystem go missing.

31C!? Yeah, that's gonna raise the system temps by a considerable margin.

83C peak is a bit hot, but still within limits. I'd be worried if it consistently exceeds 85C.

WLAN cards do not work in a WWAN slot. True. The T430 WWAN slot has SATA signals in lieu of PCIe in order to support mSATA SSDs. And the bluetooth part works off USB, which may have a (non-working) trace in the WWAN port. The WWAN slot definitely has USB signals, as the WWAN cards are USB-based. Ch...

I've never owned nor encountered the 770X, but its Thinkwiki page mentions that the CS4610 PCI audio chip is paired with the CS4239 ISA audio chip. This was done in order to have DOS audio capability (via Soundblaster emulation).
