Re: HDMI Port is no longer necessary

Another issue is the firmware not getting updates when the manufacturer abandons the product (or goes out of business). Components like the web browser will be stuck with older versions, which will be vulnerable to future exploits, like outdated Android phones.

Not to scare you, but Smart TVs have some nasty vulnerabilities, like this one: https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/0 ... -required/

Dunno if it could be made to work with ATSC though.

Re: Which version of Linux to install?

On Thinkpads that aren't the newer models I use Debian simply because I've been using it for 10 years or so.

On bleeding edge hardware (which I don't have) I'll probably try Arch, though it might be too much for beginners.

Re: Lenov G50-45 does not like use ...(:

I haven't handled many systems with Windows 10 and especially UEFI. I can't figure out if - it's just the laptop not remembering the proper boot order (which might be a hardware issue), - an overlooked BIOS setting (some have an "OS install" setting or similar) - a problem with UEFI (which I have li...

Bad RAM can cause boot failure (no display, not detecting HDD).

Try running a memory test like memtest86+. A few passes (4 or more) should be enough.

Powder-coat a design or just a flat color? What color/design are you thinking of.
Flat black, as a Thinkpad should be. :D

My aunt's X60 is even more battered-- the cat had a habit of sleeping on top of it. The lid is full of little scratches as a result. :o

Since my X220's battered and beaten, I'm wondering if powdercoating is a viable option for the magnesium lid and bottom chassis. :D

Not much you can do at this point, I'm afraid. It could be anything, like a bad solder joint on the RAM slot, failed electronic component (like a capacitor) somewhere between the RAM slot and the northbridge, or even a bad solder joint on the northbridge chip itself. :?

I will remove the fan assembly and replace any old heat-transfer paste with some fresh stuff when I get the keyboard replacement I ordered yesterday. Don't forget to separate the fan from the rest of the heatsink, and clear out the dust that would usually build up in the cooling fins over the years.

I liked 5:4 even better than 4:3, and used it as recently as 2014 on all of my work computers. I've used a 5:4 screen (NEC 1960NX, SXGA, PVA) until 2015, to proofread documents (prior to printing them), and I have to say they're awesome for the job. Too bad the LCD panel itself developed issues whi...

The answer is deceptively simple.

One is a Slim model (P51s) which generally have low voltage or Ultrabook processors.

The other is a Performance (T470p) model, which usually have more powerful (and power-hungry) components.

Maybe just put it in a warm dry place (not in direct sunlight) for a week or so, and hope that everything evaporates.

What settings have you tried?

I've played around with some settings, and added the speed setting to 10-trackpoint.rules file

Code: Select all

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="input", ATTR{name}=="*TrackPoint*", ATTR{device/sensitivity}="240" ATTR{device/speed}="200"

The second (beige) optical must be quite old or unique to have an analog volume dial and headphone jack.
Probably an IDE CD-RW / DVD-ROM unit. I don't recall ever seeing a SATA one with a headphone jack.
