You might take a look at gkrellm as an easy way of keeping tab of temps/fans/etc.
Psensor is another.

Re: Advice needed on t430s

The CPU in the T430s is soldered to the board (not mounted on a socket), so it's impossible to remove/upgrade without specialized equipment (BGA rework station).

No. The two generations after T410 accept mSATA SSDs.

Re: What do you do with Linux?

Pretty much what I used to do on Windows, I guess?

Web browsing, typing documents, listening to music, watching videos, etc.

Sometimes I go exploring the software repository in a "what does this program do?" mode, or try to look for alternatives for the default programs.

Re: Can Libreboot enable SATA II ?

Yes. The limitation is the ICH7-M southbridge chip common to R/T/X60 (and Z61). For some reason it lacks SATA II support, even though the desktop variant of this southbridge supports it. :? You want something even weirder? For some reason, ICH7-M has AHCI support, even though the desktop ICH7 does ...

Is the trackpoint cable separate from the keyboard cable? If yes, maybe it's possible to transplant the trackpoint module from the old keyboard to the new one.

Remove the palmrest, perhaps? You might be able to use a small flat screwdriver to push the hard drive out.

No, AFAIK. The closest thing to an X220s is the regular X220 chassis with a ULV processor and the single heatpipe heatsink (04W0436) that weighs only 34 grams IIRC.

Re: Your favorite free O/S

Years ago a friend of mine bought a Dell 1525 (against my advice), and it ran hot from day one. Decent thermal paste (like Thermal Grizzly) might improve it. It's ridiculously easy to remove the CPU heatsink (underside access panel), but the fan is a separate unit for some reason. Undervolting work...

I think it's a combination of the 4.9 kernel and the Intel driver in mesa. In one of my X61's I reverted to the stock kernel after encountering problems with kernel 4.9 and the latest Intel mesa driver from backports.

Besides, dealing with the inner workings of the failed one seemed a tad dangerious also
IIRC there's a capacitor on the primary side (operating at mains voltage) which presents a shock hazard even when unplugged.

I'm wondering how good the charging/monitoring circuit is inside that old battery pack. I mean, newer NiMH chargers have become "smarter", right?

Wait, GPU hang? Maybe it's the Intel graphics driver. The current Debian release defaults to the generic modesetting driver for any Intel GPU newer than the GMA 900/950, due to bugs in the Intel driver.

To accomodate different screen size you also need different motherboard size. That's why I am being pesimistic.
With proper design, that can be avoided. The system boards of the 14.1 and 15 inch T4x and R5x series shared a common size/form factor; same with the 14.1 and 15 inch non-widescreen T6x.

According to https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Yo ... 798.0.html, it's LP133WF4-SPB1, but it's glossy.

Since there's no docking connector, you have to sacrifice the DP port at the back.

Re: T430 loose hinge

From the pics you've linked, it appears that the hinge is broken. Check the cost for a new pair of hinges, then add the cost of either Plast-aid (if the lid is made of plastic) or metal-filled epoxy (if the lid is made of magnesium). If the cost is close to that of an entire lid, then getting a lid ...

I remember encountering an X61 with that grayish Enter key. My eyes register the color as a dark tinge of moss green, or maybe olive drab.
