Re: OS on USB 3.0 SSD via Expresscard ???

Booting from USB requires support from BIOS-- remember those Pentium II and III PCs with onboard USB ports which you can't boot from? In the X220's case, since the Expresscard USB 3.0 card is an external device (not built into the motherboard) it's impossible for the BIOS to have boot support for it...

Re: OS on USB 3.0 SSD via Expresscard ???

Maybe this https://www.plop.at/en/plopkexec/full.html or this http://www.solemnwarning.net/kexec-loader/ , but they only work with Linux kernels. Addendum: I have Debian 9 32-bit (Stretch) installed on an M.2 SSD inside a USB 3.0 enclosure. I use it for diagnostics, as a complement to Parted Magic w...

Well, if it says it wants 4.5.2, let's give it 4.5.2. :P

Re: T420 34mm Express Card and Dock

The USB 3.0 card is an external device, so boot support for it doesn't exist in the BIOS. I'm pretty sure it's the same for the T420.

Re: T60 with 4GB - 3GB detected

It's a chipset + BIOS limitation. It's possible to get around 3.5GB accessible RAM with Coreboot (an alternative firmware) if it's configured to disable Firewire, Cardbus, etc.

I'm a bit worried about changing the BIOS setting of the primary display to External. If you don't get any video output on both the external monitor and the internal display, I don't know how to set the primary display back to Internal. :o

Re: Which T6x-models support "Long Mode" (where a 64-bit OS can access 64-bit instructions)?

Let me guess, your T60 has a Core Duo processor.

Long mode is exclusive to x86-64 processors like the Core 2 Duo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_mode

This means you only need to upgrade the processor. T60's use Socket M CPUs like the Core 2 Duo T5600, T7200, T7400, and T7600.

Do those i3's have speedstep or are they always locked at a same cpu speed?
Core i3s have Speedstep. IIRC the last processors that were locked to a single CPU speed were Core 2 Duo-era Celerons.

Or maybe you're thinking of Turbo Boost? Only i5s and i7s have that.

If you really don't want to install System Update (and .NET), you can use Device Manager to provide the Hardware ID of the unknown devices.

Since your T450s has Intel Graphics (uses system RAM), try removing the 8GB RAM and check if the problem goes away.

Where exactly did you spray the lubricant? It should be at the shaft or axle of the fan. Usually that requires complete disassembly of the laptop.

Unusual X220 repasting story...

My X220's CPU temps have been rather high lately, so I tore it apart and had a look. Paste wasn't dry (I repasted it a few months ago), but the thermal pad wasn't sitting flat on top of the PCH chip-- I didn't replace it the last 2 times I repasted since I didn't have any at hand. I realized that it...
