Re: My backup machine (X61 T7500) gave up the ghost. :(

Luckily X61 boards are cheap nowadays :) Problem is local availability. They may be cheap and plentiful in the US, but where I am, they're not as common. I've seen X60's here priced at around 80 USD. :x If I find a cheap board or a half-working X61, sure I'll take it in a heartbeat. Then again, the...

I run cpu-Z and it report correctly ... ( t8300 2.4Ghz 800fsb 3MB ).. it's just Windows10Pro that reports it is another chip ( reports an Intel core duo with lower specs , a T7250 ) but I just noticed temperature on the chip have very wild swings , they seem to go from 30 40 to 60 70 in no time , l...

Try opening up the laptop and disconnecting the touchpad's cable. If the trackpoint works, then it could mean that the touchpad got bricked. :(

Have you tried removing all drives (CD/DVD, HDD)?

Sometimes a malfunctioning drive can cause the BIOS to seemingly hang, because it's waiting for the drive to respond.

Lenovo System Update is probably what you're thinking. I don't personally use it though. Drivers I usually install: - chipset - graphics - LAN - wifi - Trackpoint/Ultranav - Active Protection System (not needed if you only have SSDs and not HDDs) - Hotkey - card reader Software - Lenovo Power Manag...

Interesting - have you tried removing your WLAN card to see if you get the same beeps? The security chip is still a mystery unfortunately.
I'll try it later.

***Addendum **

Removed the WLAN card, no change. :(

My backup machine (X61 T7500) gave up the ghost. :(

Long story short: was using it, took a bathroom break, when I got back Linux had exited to text mode and a blinking cursor, I somehow managed to make a clean shutdown/reset, but it booted to a 4-4-4-4 error beep and the display not powering up. Removed RAM, same error beep. 10-second salute, no chan...

OK to use old version of Lenovo Power Manager on older Thinkpad models?

I'm currently setting up an X60 with Windows 7, but hesitating to install Lenovo Power Manager-- I've noticed that even with my X220 with SSD, it doesn't start up quickly, which leads me to suspect that it's a bloated piece of software. I've managed to get an older version (3.67) which is smaller (1...

One more thing: 6200ABGN can use 5GHz channels and 300mbps max IIRC, while 3945 is limited to wifi-G (2.4GHz, 54mbps).

Re: X61 - Impact of wireless card

The most noticeable impact of a new wireless card is lesser heat on the right palmrest. :D

You'll only need AC if you have an AC router (or planning to upgrade in the future).

Also, you'll need to flash the Middleton BIOS in order to remove the wifi card whitelist.

The link I posted in the previous message mentions This is as far as I can take you using the information that you've provided. Next up, you need to figure out what is taking up so much space in the UEFI variable NVRAM. NVRAM --> Non-Volatile RAM. It's a part of the BIOS flash chip where you can sto...

Re: I want to put an NVMe ssd into my x60s

NVMe uses 4 PCIe lanes.
You can only access 1 lane on an X60, on the WLAN slot.

It also needs BIOS support in order to boot. Of course, such support is nonexistent in the X60 series

Stick to a regular SSD.

Re: Can an X61T be upgraded to a useful extent?

Unfortunately. the X series Thinkpads are not upgradable CPU-wise. This is because the CPU itself is soldered to the system board, which makes it impossible to remove without specialized equipment. What program are you using to watch HD video? From my video playback tests, the Core 2 Duo L7500 is ca...

Re: Advice on buying a Thinkpad X60 in 2018

You don't need to buy an X61 cooler right away.
Monitor the temps first. If it's high, clean the heatsink and apply new thermal paste. Then try undervolting the CPU.

If the temps are still high after doing both should you then consider an X61 fan.

Re: Advice on buying a Thinkpad X60 in 2018

4GB? Due to chipset and BIOS limits, the max usable RAM is around 3GB. T7200? My experience with the X60 in general is that they ran quite hot due to a less-than-optimal heatsink design. My aunt uses an X60 with T5600. It took some undervolting to stop the CPU from being toasty. You could upgrade it...

The RAM type is correct (DDR2 667).

You could have run a memory test (like memtest86+). That way you'd know which of the two RAM sticks is defective.
