Re: cloning/imaging unnecessary?

Keeping a disk image of the OS drive gives you a quick recovery option-- no need to reinstall OS, set up user accounts, download updates, install applications, etc which can take hours, even a day or two of downtime.

Re: T61p with laggy youtube 1080p playback issue

A T9300 is able to handle 1080p H.264 video by itself. Problem is, web browsers add a significant CPU load. H.264 decoding can be offloaded to the nVidia 570M. The Problem again lies with the browsers, because they have a spotty record when it comes to supporting that. That's why I agree with beskus...

Re: Keyboard conversion custom case

It's already been done: https://hackaday.com/2014/04/30/using-a ... -over-usb/

The base circuit is usually a microcontroller board like a Teensy or Arduino. There's existing firmware for creating custom keyboards.

Re: Thinkpad x201 display mod (1900*1200 panel)

Not without extensive mods.

IIRC that screen has an eDP (embedded DisplayPort) link, whereas the X201's LCD has an LVDS link.

You'd need to make an adapter board similar to nitrocaster's X220/X230 Full HD kit, which uses the Displayport signals from the docking connector.

Re: Is the Dell Latitude D 520 Screen an IPS/Flexview screen?

Normally I open the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and look for a string called "EDID", most of the times (at least in my ThinkPads) the panel model is listed there. I tried that out just now, this is what I find: [ 18.008] (II) intel(0): EDID vendor "LGD", prod id 728 Not that helpful, but at least the ...

Re: Is the Dell Latitude D 520 Screen an IPS/Flexview screen?

OK, I tried loading read-edid and that worked fine from the package manager. I ran get-edid and it gave me no information except to say that "no buses have an EDID, mmap/dev/zero:operation not permitted, and error initialising real-mode interface" I played around with suffixes and tried some other ...

Re: Is the Dell Latitude D 520 Screen an IPS/Flexview screen?

Thanks, I'll try and do that. I had no idea Linux would put out information like the model numbers of panels. Will the dump pf the panel's EDID tell me the maker too, like LG or Boe-Hydis? Or will that come with through Google? It's between Google and accumulated information. Each manufacture...

Re: Is the Dell Latitude D 520 Screen an IPS/Flexview screen?

Since you're using Linux, you can install the read-edid package, then run get-edid from a terminal with root privilege. If it's successful you'll get a dump of the panel's EDID, the last part of which is the model # of the panel, like LP150E05-A2K1, HV150UX1-100 or something like that. Feed the mode...

Re: Anyone upgrade a T420 from 8 GB to 12 GB of RAM?

Have you ever hit more than 75% RAM usage? Has the system ever slowed down because it ran out of free RAM and started using the swap file?
If you answered "no" to either, then you probably don't need the RAM upgrade.

It might be similar to my X220.
At first it had intermittent speaker output, and eventually (after a few months) no output at all.

As it turned out, the headphone jack got damaged, and detects a headphone even when nothing is plugged in.

All T60 models suffer from the 3GB RAM limit, because it's a chipset + BIOS issue and not related to the processor.

Hi. My new roommate happens to own a T420s. After downloading the file, what's the next step? Does he just click the file and the BIOS will update itself? First, check the BIOS settings. IIRC the X1 Carbon 2014 uses the built-in Intel Graphics.

Does the issue persist even when using an external monitor?
If yes, it boils down to either bad RAM, or a CPU problem.

Should I insert insulation tape on the top of the HSF so it won't touch the keyboard's bottom ? Is the touching a problem flow of electricity ? Electricity? Probably not. IMO the bigger problem is heat transfer, as the keyboard wasn't designed to carry heat. I'm not sure, but the heat might degrade...

I've set up a small SSD (32GB) in a USB enclosure, with Debian installed. Once I boot from there, I can set the charge thresholds using TLP.

Finally found a card that works. It's a Broadcom BCM4313 BGN (2.4GHz) [14e4:4727]. Getting it to work on Linux took a bit of fiddling, as I wasn't sure which kernel driver to use (there's at least 3 drivers for the b43 series). Debian loaded wl (binary-only driver) by default, but wouldn't detect an...

My suspect is probably that one of the capacitors are done for.
See if you can measure any faults with voltmeter over the capacitors
For electronics this old, I'm inclined to agree.
It would help if you have an oscilloscope and a copy of the schematics.

mSATA SSDs won't work on those slots. Among the X series, only the X220 and X230 support them.

The mSATA connector only has SATA and USB signals, while the X200's mini PCIe slots only have PCIe signals (WWAN slot also has USB).

If the heatsink isn't lying flat against the CPU's silicon die, it doesn't matter how tight it's screwed.

One method I've read about is to turn each of the mounting screws 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time, in order-- turn screw #1 half-turn, then #2, #3, etc. until it;s tight.
