Re: T70 pushing 100 degrees under full load

Well you never know until you try! 1. I'll have to find a tube of thermal epoxy first. It seems unavailable in stores here, so I may have to order overseas. I have a few heatsinks from dead laptops, from which I can harvest some copper plates (and hopefully some heatpipes). 2. My X61 T7500 is dead,...

Re: No OS on Machine

A good number of Linux distributions have what's called a Live CD / DVD / USB, which is an already-running Linux installation on the disc itself.

Re: Spent TWO YEARS putting this vintage thinkpad BEAST together. Hope you guys like it!

IIRC no BIOS on the 760 series can support HDDs 8GB and larger. The solution was to install Ontrack Disk Manager's Dynamic Drive Overlay (DDO) on the HDD before installing it on the 760.

@wujstefan

That heatsink mod you linked to is quite interesting. I wonder if it can be done successfully on other thermally-constrained Thinkpads like the X series, as well as the T420/430 with quad-core CPUs. :D

IIRC the lid closed switch is a Hall effect sensor, which is sensitive to magnets. The magnet may have fallen off during one of your rebuilds, or the sensor may have been damaged.

Re: Is this a CCFL or LED inverter?? [PIC Warning]

I wonder if they still have a "card" even though it doesn't have an inductor on it. That's how the X200/X201 (not tablets) are" In the non-Tablet X200/201, the inverter card contains the indicator LEDs. For non-CCFL models, the card has no inverter circuit, just the indicators, that's why it's call...

Re: Is this a CCFL or LED inverter?? [PIC Warning]

I just checked the X200T/X201T HMM. It appears some of the models don't have inverter cards, which could only mean that those have LED-backlit screens. If yours has an inverter card, then it's definitely CCFL.

Definitely CCFL. The big part covered in orange plastic is the inductor. LED-backlit screens don't need that.

Re: X220: how do you tell if you have IPS or non-IPS screen?

I bought an X220 yesterday. When the BIOS boot screen appeared, I immediately recognized that the display was somehow different from the X220 I already own, so I immediately asked the seller if it was IPS or not. He said he didn't know, so I moved the lid back and forth, and realized that yes, it wa...

Yes. Note that the Intel-only heatsink is different from the one with nVidia GPU, it's recommended to buy a replacement board with the heatsink included.

Re: Buying a used Laptop? What to look for, how to test it, etc.

If you're familiar with Linux, it's not that hard to test. I have a small SSD (32GB) on a USB enclosure with Debian 9 32-bit installed. It already has tlp installed, which lets me check the battery status, psensor to monitor temps, 7zip as a basic CPU benchmark/stress test, and gsmartcontrol to chec...

Re: Can you help with getting these spare parts?

According to the X230 FRU list:

04W1414 HDD cover
04W1716 HDD rubber 7.0mm

Feed these to google, ebay, and amazon, and you should be able to find some.
The ones from the X220 are compatible (same part numbers according to the HMM).

Re: x41t mSATA mod - is it possible?

If I want it quick and cheap, I'd pick the USB port. The converter option is fine, but you have to tackle: - component placement: will the converter + SSD fit inside the HDD bay? - power: not sure if the X41T's 3.3v voltage rail has enough amps for the converter, OTOH the SSD isn't a power-hungry de...

Re: x41t mSATA mod - is it possible?

Another question I have, regarding voltage - some people said that I can take 5v from USB - is this a valid option? If yes, can I solder both 3.3V and 5V to SATA socket, i.e. 3.3V to old IDE one and one hooked up to USB, or I have to stick with only one power wire? I prefer connecting just the 3.3v...

Re: x41t mSATA mod - is it possible?

IMO soldering wires directly to the mSATA connector is difficult due to how close the pins are to each other. It's easier to use a SATA to mSATA adapter. Regarding voltages: Normal SATA SSDs use 5v. AFAIK 12v is never used, in order to maintain compatibility with laptops. And there's a thread from t...

Regarding LibreBoot , it only works on the older X60 motherboards. For some reason, Penryn X61/T61 models were skipped for the X200/T400. I have never be able to get a clear answer as to why this was the case - considering the high appeal of the T601 and X601 frankens. IIRC, the necessary documenta...

Re: Flexing-issue on T60p 15 inch: possible?

Well, to be exact, the "flexing" issue on A3x/T4x is also mostly due to repeated thermal expansion/contraction. The board flexing just makes it worse. :P Indeed it does, especially on the thin 14" T4x units. The thermal expansion is putting mechanical stress along the plane of the system board, and...
