The general term is inductor.

In this case it's a choke, as it's used to smoothen the DC input by blocking high-frequency signals.

Re: Is this cpu defective?

As for how you mentioned that it will not work, do you specifically mean that some processors do not have the appropriate software to downvolt/undervolt? Something like the mobile variants of the Pentium 2 or the Pentium 3? I'm curious. Mobile Core i series CPUs from the first (Clarksfield and Arra...

Re: X200s and Celeron M??

The Celeron M 723 is a single-core Penryn deprived of features like VT-x and Speedstep (!!). If you've ever used a Core Solo, that's pretty much it. Or you can actually simulate one by disabling multiprocessing in BIOS, then reducing the max CPU speed to 1.2GHz. Or just try any single-core Atom netb...

@axur-delmeria: Indeed, the X220 came with this aluminum piece heatsink and the X230 used copper. https://i.imgur.com/GB0NvE2m.jpg https://i.imgur.com/60RIvDNm.jpg I'm not sure that's enough to make a significant temperature difference The best way to find out is to mount the X220 heatsink in the X...

Re: ThinkPads with Pentium IIIs

I think the 600X could be upgraded to a Pentium III 850MHz; that goes for any Thinkpad that uses MMC-2 processors (and 100MHz FSB). The 390X uses MMC-2 as well.

IIRC the 240 had a soldered CPU, so it's not upgradeable.

Not sure about the others.

Re: Overheating while compiling an Android ROM

Idle temp of 50+ deg C is too high in my books. New thermal paste might help but might not considering you applied it 2 years ago which is not that long ago. Back then did you stress/stability test the CPU before deciding that it was fit for duty? That CPU will run hot unless you underclock it. I a...

Re: Tooling up for an X220 / X230 Frankenpad

Can you take a picture of the X230 heatsink? I want to see if it looks like this.

I'm referring to the copper plate around the fan where the heatpipes are soldered to -- in the X220 heatsinks I have that part isn't copper. It may be one of the reasons it has lower temps compared to the X220.

Re: X60 tablet overhaul. which OS for lower cpu temp?

i heard that it is always good to apply oil for sewing machines in the fan, is it ok to do that? That's what I do. It extends the life of the fan. Also, don't forget to dust off the fan and heatsink, especially the cooling fins. Another way to reduce temperature is to undervolt the processor. Regar...

IMO anything with a fast link between northbridge and southbridge (i.e. Intel Hub Architecture) has a good chance of benefiting from an SSD.
OTOH I've yet to try an SSD on anything that doesn't have SATA ports.

Re: ThinkPad 365E disk error

Actually the issue here is the Thinkpad's BIOS. It interprets the HDD's parameters in a way that's different from the XP laptop.
Does the 365E have port for the external floppy drive? If it does, maybe you can get an external FDD for it.

Re: ThinkPad 365E disk error

You probably need to boot the 365E from a floppy disk and format the HDD.

Then transfer the Windows 98 installation files via serial or parallel port.

IMO it's not about first time owning a Thinkpad or not. I'm guessing it's an LBA vs CHS translation issue.

To be fair, the Firewire port is a pretty rare option for the T420. It's the first time I've heard of it, to be honest.

From the looks of it, it's a drop-in replacement, but based on this picture you might need to fabricate a cover for it.

A/C lagging should if it is passive rather than flame..... I used black A/C lagging between componants (as a "soft mount/cushion") in an engine bay near the exhaust and never saw any problems. Should be ok in a laptop... Sounds good then. Maybe there exists some kind of self-adhesive version of A/C...

Can either of those survive high temperatures (up to 100c)? It's attached to the heatsink after all.

That you should do anyway.
And use a decent paste such as Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or Hydronaut.
And if those pastes aren't enough, it's time to consider more drastic approaches like:

* liquid metal

* heatsink modification (like a DIY watercooling loop)
