Re: W520 audio

It might be similar to my X220.
At first it had intermittent speaker output, and eventually (after a few months) no output at all.

As it turned out, the headphone jack got damaged, and detects a headphone even when nothing is plugged in.

All T60 models suffer from the 3GB RAM limit, because it's a chipset + BIOS issue and not related to the processor.

1) If that's the case, what does it mean for my ThinkPad? Sorry I'm a noob - does it mean it's dead, are my data lost or can I just replace it with a new one without either of those things being threatened? Your data is safe, as your data is stored in either the hard drive or SSD (if your X220 has ...

Hi. My new roommate happens to own a T420s. After downloading the file, what's the next step? Does he just click the file and the BIOS will update itself? First, check the BIOS settings. IIRC some models have an option to allow BIOS flashing. Disconnect from the Internet, then temporarily disable a...

What is this nostalgia bug that every now and then comes around the corner and bites me in the cheeks ? A yearning for things from a time when life was much simpler, maybe? As much as I like Thinkpads, it's generally tempered by 1. practicality :thumbs-UP: it's the reason i let go of the 760XD -- i...

Re: X1 Carbon 2014 boots with display errors

IIRC the X1 Carbon 2014 uses the built-in Intel Graphics.

Does the issue persist even when using an external monitor?
If yes, it boils down to either bad RAM, or a CPU problem.

Should I insert insulation tape on the top of the HSF so it won't touch the keyboard's bottom ? Is the touching a problem flow of electricity ? Electricity? Probably not. IMO the bigger problem is heat transfer, as the keyboard wasn't designed to carry heat. I'm not sure, but the heat might degrade...

I've set up a small SSD (32GB) in a USB enclosure, with Debian installed. Once I boot from there, I can set the charge thresholds using TLP.

Finally found a card that works. It's a Broadcom BCM4313 BGN (2.4GHz) [14e4:4727]. Getting it to work on Linux took a bit of fiddling, as I wasn't sure which kernel driver to use (there's at least 3 drivers for the b43 series). Debian loaded wl (binary-only driver) by default, but wouldn't detect an...

My suspect is probably that one of the capacitors are done for.
See if you can measure any faults with voltmeter over the capacitors
For electronics this old, I'm inclined to agree.
It would help if you have an oscilloscope and a copy of the schematics.

mSATA SSDs won't work on those slots. Among the X series, only the X220 and X230 support them.

The mSATA connector only has SATA and USB signals, while the X200's mini PCIe slots only have PCIe signals (WWAN slot also has USB).

Based from Intel's product page it's 2.4GHz only.

You can replace it with :

Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 FRU 60Y3233

Re: x220t insane temps

If the heatsink isn't lying flat against the CPU's silicon die, it doesn't matter how tight it's screwed.

One method I've read about is to turn each of the mounting screws 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time, in order-- turn screw #1 half-turn, then #2, #3, etc. until it;s tight.

I've noticed that major Windows 10 updates tend to break stuff, as they seem to revert settings to default. I had to reinstall a certain printer's drivers on a client's machine after a recent update.

The presence of the SIM card holder doesn't mean it has a UMTS modem. Case in point, all the X61 units I've owned had a SIM slot, but none had 3G modems. Strange. 7446-3sg doesn't show up in the MTM database, and model 7446 refers to the R400. :o Regarding the webcam, try installing the hotkey featu...

YouTube shouldn't be an issue, unless you're watching 1080p video and your processor is either single core or below 2.0 GHz.

NVS 140M supports video decode acceleration, but whether the browser can make use of it is another matter entirely.

If not the GPU itself, the video RAM chips are failing.
But since both are soldered onto the system board, the easiest fix is board replacement.

That's only usable for DOS or Linux. Windows should work with just 60GB, but I'd recommend at least 120GB, to have free space for Windows updates and whatnot.
