Re: Anyone ever ran Haiku OS on an X301?

The X301 has similar hardware to the X200 and T400 (late Core 2 Duo CPU, GM45 chipset). If it works on those, it will probably work on the X301.

Re: Stay on Windows 11 or switch to Linux?

See, people complained about getting integrated sound cards in the 2000 (I had a really nice Aureal Vortex 2 PCI sound card back then), Funnily enough, I have two PCI sound cards in storage: * Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! * generic Crystal Soundfusion CS4280 I tested the latter on a Pentium E5...

Re: Thinkpad x230 replacement for music production (Ableton)

If you're looking into second-hand Thinkpads, there have been many T480 units being sold since last year. Of course, if you find newer ones like the T14 Gen 1 AMD, that's great too. :D

Re: Theoretical oldest thinkpad to support gentoo x86?

IIRC the very first Thinkpads already had a 486-class processor, though some have the IBM 486SLC which may be closer to a 386 (in terms of CPU instructions) than an actual 486. The real question is whether the kernel still supports plain 486, because Linus Torvalds himself thinks it may be time to d...

It's a laptop that's over a decade old. At that age all bets are off. My X220 died late last year.

Re: Wifi Card upgrade suggestions?

I updated my 2200 to a 6205 and then a 6300 in my T430. Didn't really notice any difference! Well, they're all WiFi N cards, and a minor upgrade (2200 --> 6205) at best. The 6300's 450Mbps max only comes into play if your router has 3 transmit antennas. For casual internet use you won't really noti...

Re: Using the display and keyboard from a dead T460s?

When reusing a laptop LCD, the first thing you need is information: what's the exact brand/model of the LCD panel you have, and what are its characteristics resolution (1366x768, 1920x1080, etc.) , interface type (LVDS vs eDP), connector type (usually 30 vs 40 pin). You may find the LCD's datasheet ...

Intel X3100?
That's just the graphics that's built into the GM965 chipset. dGPU stands for "discrete GPU" which means it's a separate chip from the chipset or processor. The T61 may have an nVidia Quadro NVS 140M or Quadro FX 570M discrete GPU. They're more capable than the Intel X3100.

Dying CCFL backlight, as TPFanatic has already said.

LED backlight upgrade is possible, but I don't know if kits are even available. Might need soldering too.

Re: Upgrading x60 for fun. Have a few questions.

Keep in mind that older machines such as the X60 run on PCI Express 1.0/1.1 and will not have enough bus bandwidth to properly operate at the card's intended speed. PCI Express 1.0/1.1 x1 maxes out at 250 megabytes/sec, around 2.5 gigabit LAN speed. With most WiFi 6E cards having 2 antennas (2T2R),...

Re: NVME Boot On ThinkPad T43

There are existing Expresscard NVMe adapters that don't stick out from the slot, but only fit the smaller 2242 size SSDs.

The software part is a lot more interesting though: leveraging PXE boot is an unusual approach, compared to the usual Clover EFI bootloader route.

Re: Cpu swap gone wrong.

It's possible that the 2820QM is fine, the real problem is that you're running it on a T420 that already has an nVidia GPU. You see, the T420's heatsink was only designed to handle dual-core processors with 35 watts TDP. AFAIK all the i7 quad-cores compatible with the T420 are 45 watts. One way to m...

Libreboot won't magically increase the maximum supported RAM because it's a hardware limitation. The stock BIOS already supports most Core 2 Duo processors. If you're thinking of Core 2 Quads, that requires hardware modification, though I don't know the details of how it's done. 1vyrain is only appl...

Do not get the AX201. It's one of those cards with CNVi which only work on certain Intel processors because they literally put some parts of the WiFi and BT modules inside the processor itself/ In any case, the AX210 is WiFi 6E, which adds the 6GHz band. The AX201 (and AX200) is WiFi 6 which only ha...

Re: X220 Battery Recelling

There was another thread somewhere in this forum that discusses battery re-celling. One of the things I learned there is that there's a 3-pin fuse that the BMS can blow that prevents the lithium cells from getting any power. Replacing that fuse (if it's already blown) is one of the steps to rebuild ...
