Compaq Aero Contura 4/25
Our first laptop was a Compaq Contura Aero 4/33c. It's like the 90s version of the netbook: minimalist, with a small screen.

Has anybody tried upgrading the ports on the dock station? I'd like to convert the outdated VGA port to HDMI.
The closest thing to an HDMI port on the Series 3 Ultrabase is the Displayport++ port, which only needs a passive DP-to-HDMI dongle. It will work up to 1920x1200 IIRC.

Since he already has a T450, a T440p with a quad-core i7 should be fine. :D

IIRC no Socket 478 Pentium 4's were 64-bit-- only the LGA 775 ones were.

Perhaps an Expresscard Gigabit LAN adapter? https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-ExpressCard-Gigabit-Ethernet-Network/dp/B003N3G1BI/ Another idea is to get the 2503 dock and install a network card on its PCI Express slot. Re: Which ThinkPad gen suits best for Net/Free/OpenBSD?

The best Idea I've had in a while was to turn my FreeBSD based X61 with T7300 @ 2GHz and 4GB RAM into a dedicated .mp3 player. It has a tiny footprint, sits on a table in easy reach of my recliner and does nothing but play beautiful music for me. I never shut it down and it's at 178 days uptime. Th...

To me personally, the question is whether one is comfortable with relying to a lesser-known-SSD-brand to store their data. I know I'm not.
Western Digital has a budget line of SSDs (WD Green).

Of the lesser-known brands, I'd pick Transcend.

If the OS you use is like Windows 10 that has a nasty habit of running programs behind your back (downloading and installing updates), then a quad-core like the A4-5000 might be a better idea. Had Win 10 installed on an X61T (with 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo L7700) and the background tasks ate up an entire CP...

The T520 (or any Sandy Bridge CPU for that matter) does not officially support DDR3L. I mean, it works, but at 1.5v instead of 1.35v. I encountered a post a while back that says running DDR3L at 1.5v causes the RAM chips to run hotter, causing intermittent errors (resulting in BSODs). What the guy d...

1440x900 LCDs weren't AFFS. They only made 1280x800 AFFS displays. Oh, ok. Too bad. Are either of these displays slot-in replacements, anyways? The 1280x800 CCFL screens use a different cable and inverter compared to the 1280x800 LED ones. The X200 Hardware Maintenance Manual has an extensive parts...

The inverter does have a transformer. And yes it's the source of the buzzing sound. It would be nice if there exists a LED backlight kit for this screen. Thanks for the reply! How are your temps with the x61 heatsink and do you also undervolt? My X60s' CPU is a Core Solo U1300, with a TDP of 5.5w and max of 8.8w. If you're watching youtube through a web browser, you're sure to have problems with 720p and higher. The ancient GMA 950 lacks any form of video decode acceleration, so the CPU has to do all the work. Unfortunately, the web browser adds a significant CPU load, further burdening the processor. The yellowish hue may be a sign of an aging CCFL.
The buzzing noise would be the inverter, which could be an issue with it or the CCFL.

One alternative is to get a dead X60/X61 (with working heatsink and fan) and transplant the X61s board there. My current toy is an X60sF Frankenpad, which is basically an X60s board stuffed inside the chassis of a regular X60. It uses the X60 heatsink without any issues. There's the minor issue abou...
