Re: Feeling proud of my mint condition G40.

As for SpeedStep it did not work. I'm not bothered about that though, and now that I have a working SSD drive in the G41 machine I am very happy with the overall performance. Which 3.46Ghz CPU do you have? the "mobile" one or the regular desktop socket 478 ones? Not sure about the G series but the ...

Re: Feeling proud of my mint condition G40.

The crazy high temps I experienced were due to me upgrading the CPU, and using the old aluminium silver heatsink intended for the Celeron D that was in before. Once I took that out and replaced it with a copper heatsink and cooler from a G40 with a P4 2.8GHz Northwood CPU, then the temps dropped rig...

Re: Feeling proud of my mint condition G40.

I had two G40 machines that I have since sold, but I kept swapped out the heatsink from one, to use in my remaining G41 which I maxxed out with the best CPU for it. That copper heatsink does a fantastic job and turned the hottest running Thinkpad in my collection, into one of the coolest running. It...

Re: Upgrading an R50e to SSD.

Yes I have used three of the four sets so far, and all of them working just fine in a Thinkpad G41, T43p and Acer Aspire 5612WLMi. I also have another branded adapter mentioned here on the forum, that I successfully used with a Plextor SSD. The performance of that is about the same as the cheap Alie...

Re: Upgrading an R50e to SSD.

I needed some hard drives for some of my IDE based Thinkpads recently, and in the end it made more sense to buy some 128GB mSATA SSD drives + mSATA to IDE adapters from Aliexpress. I'm in the UK so it cost a total of £20 shipped, and took just over a week to arrive (things take way longer then they ...

Re: Experience with Broadcom BCM70015 HD Video Processor card

In my Thinkpad Z61p I installed the Broadcom by removing the WiFi card, and using the slot for the video card instead. After that just download the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and use Windows Media Classic player that comes with it, to play high bitrate / fps / resolution videos on your T61. Up until lat...

Re: T43p SATA Guide (Beware pictures, 56k-ers)

In my T43p I have a Plextor 128GB-PX-128M6M mSATA SSD drive plugged in via a Lycom ST-173-7 adapter, and this works perfectly but was expensive back in 2015 at £100 total. I also have some Kingspec 128GB SSD mSATA I think that work fine in all my IDE based Thinkpads, although I use a different adapt...

Re: Feeling proud of my mint condition G40.

Sorry I thought it was going to be used for more modern intensive games beyond the 1990s. I myself use my G41 for retro gaming with 1980s / 90s games, along with a USB interface to connect old joysticks etc. Although my beef is with the type of keyboards used with most laptops, as I prefer something...

Re: memory upgrade

I upgraded my T60P to T7600 and 2x2GB Samsung RAM. Also hacked a T61 CPU cooler into it which dropped temps significantly. Performance is much better and I can run 64bit Linux with the T7600. Like Cigarguy said, the lame Intel 945 chipset only recognizes 3GB of RAM which limits performance, especia...

Biggest decision would be the keyboard. If you're like me and really love the classic Thinkpad keyboard then the highest series I can get is a T420/T520/W520, etc series.
I think the W520 keyboard can also be fitted to the W530, from what I have read here on these forums.

Re: What OS to install on A31p?

I'd look for a lite version of XP or 7. The other day I put Win 7 ThinPC (x86) on my sister's old Acer Aspire 5612WLMi, which admittedly is a faster computer, but I will be putting it on my Thinkpad T43p soon. This version of Win 7 I am using is so fast and responsive, and my sister's Acer went from...

When installing Windows 7 Pro from scratch and then applying the updates, I use the Service Pack 1 single file download from the Microsoft site and then use WSUS Offline Update to add everything else. That's good I did not realise that about the Ultrabay port on the W520. My older Thinkpads like my Z61p have the SATA to IDE conversion limitation, and therefore a lot slower.
