Re: Questions on buying a Linux laptop

Why don't you ask Dell?

I have 4 Thinkpads of various model and vintages that run on my preferred Linux distro. No need to rely on what any manufacturer install. I like that freedom of choice when it comes to Linux.

Re: T60 CPU upgrade question

Different class of CPU with different Front Side Bus (FSB). The T7500 is 800 MHz FSB while the T60 generation of Thinkpads takes 667 MHz FSB such as a T2300 or T7200. My favourtite for a T60 is a T7200. There are also others that are mentioned in this and other threads.

Your HDD might be corrupt or is going bad. Back up all your data now as you might have to get a new HDD soon. Regardless, good time to do a fresh OS install.

Cancer sucks. Getting older sucks. A cigar smoking friend of mine was recently diagnose with stage 4 cancer.

No OS likes instant power shutoff. Not good for the hardware either. Get a new battery.

Re: BIOS time different

It's fine. Most OS on a lot of devices checks the time against an accurate site somewhere. The BIOS time was not meant nor used as an accurate time piece but is good enough.

Having said that, it's simple enough to hit F1 at reboot and change the time in BIOS.

Re: How much can you undervolt your T61 gpu?

Coming from an overclocking/underclocking background, no one can tell you what the voltage is for your particular system. The numbers that works for other people may not run stable on yours. At best it's only a target that may or may not work. Do it the old fashion OC/UC way, set your voltage then s...

Going from a HDD to SSD makes a big difference. From SSD to SSD not so much. If the Intel is working good, I wouldn't upgrade unless I want something of larger capacity.

Re: Lenovo, the thermal paste goes on the CPU.

Looks like a fairly typical factory paste job to me. It'll get hard and dries up with time. When you take it off it's not unusual for some paste to be stuck on the hsf and some on the cpu. The factory paste is put on too thick for my liking so I like to reapply it myself.

Been switching slowly to Linux. Always dabble with Linux but started to transition slowly when Win 10 came out. Now I'm 50/50 and can easily make the transition. There's no software that I'm so reliant on that I have to use Windows. Having said that, I'll miss Windows 7 but will continue to use it f...

Be careful with SLC, MLC and TLC marketing. Most consumer grade SSDs that advertise SLC is for the cache portion only not the storage components. Most consumer grade SSDs uses TLC for data storage. MLC SSDs are desirable but they are only available in upgraded models and will be more expensive than ...

Love the T60 machines, I still have one as a daily runner. Most any SSD will be faster than what this machine can handle. Makes a huge difference in speed. SSD are cheap these days so anyone will do. You don't hear much of chronically bad SSDs from any reputable manufacturer.

Not a good idea. At a minimum you'll have to format it to make it bootable. A 8 to 16 GB USB 2 pendrive is $5-$10, just pick up one of those.

Taking care and steps not to spill anything around the laptop would help too. Fortunately I never had an accident around a computer. Beer and drinks are placed in a way that when, not if, it spills there's nothing of value that it can damage. On airplanes the laptop, tablets and phones are stowed aw...

If you're sure the LAN cable is plugged in and is working (i.e. have a signal) then download and install the drivers.

Did you put the old CPU back in? If not then what are you waiting for? Once it's back in it should work as before. Take the opportunity to flash the BIOS at that time.

Either you got a bad CPU or the reassembly was not proper. At least now you know what the problem is. Happens to all of us. Most common for me is I forgot to tighten down the CPU in its socket.

When SSD was $400+ I'd worry about type, brand, etc. Now that 120 GB SSD are $30-$50 Cdn on sale locally I don't worry about any of that anymore. Grab the cheapest one. Use and abuse and carry on. 90% of my desktop and laptops are only SATA II so max speed is not an issue. Even turning on and using ...

What Thinkpad do you have? I've been using a docking station to achieve dual monitor capability on my T500 and T420. I really hate the T420 screen format so an external monitor is a must.
