Perfect. Don't need or want "like" feature. Been on a few cigars and whisky forums with this and it's nothing more than an popularity contest. Leave the attention seekers to social media and facebook.

Re: Bare Metal Install Advice

The BIOS doesn't really care which OS you boot to. So unless you know what you are doing I would leave the BIOS to default and boot directly to Fedora. The biggest issue you might find is that Fedora don't have the driver for some hardware. Best way to check this is to run a live distro and play wit...

Maybe you cleaned up your T500's version of the ENIAC's "bug".

I like the T500. It was and 10 years later is still a nice platform.

Re: X61 upgrade & Middleton BIOS

DDR2 4GB Sodimms have always been expensive. I was able to luck into a few in the local classifieds for a reasonable price which made it justifiable for such an old platform. Got a bunch of 2x2 GB ram for $5/stick while my 4x4 GB was $30/stick. The SSD was the biggest improvement to the computing ex...

Re: some of my new T500's BIOS settings were locked

Forum rules doesn't allow us to discuss resetting of BIOS password.

I'd ask the seller for the password or send it back. If and when the backup battery dies you'll be SOL as you won't be able to set the date and time.

Re: Bare Metal Install Advice

Take the old 256 SSD out and install Linux on the new drive. Put the old SSD aside and swap it back when/if you want to sell the machine. I wouldn't bother cloning anything. As for the BIOS update. Do it before the swap. Most BIOS will still update via a stand alone installer thus not requiring eith...

Re: T61 with SSD now takes 5mins to boot!

That's more normal. A properly installed SSD on these machines will give you a significant speedboost and will do most in speeding up the computing experience. Sometimes an OS reinstall is required to reset things.

As RBS said I would switch the BIOS SATA setting to AHCI mode and reinstall the OS.

Don't know I never tried doing that with this generation machine. It's pretty simple to burn a CD and you can do it from any machine. Your fancy desktop machine should do the trick.

Re: Thinkpad T60 CPU Upgrade

A T7200 will work in a T60 very nicely. Either you have a bad CPU, BIOS needs to be updated to recognize the "newer" Core 2 CPU, bad install, or something got damaged during the install. Put the old CPU back in. If it works as before then update the BIOS to the latest one available. Re-install the T...

Why don't you ask Dell?

I have 4 Thinkpads of various model and vintages that run on my preferred Linux distro. No need to rely on what any manufacturer install. I like that freedom of choice when it comes to Linux.

Re: T60 CPU upgrade question

Different class of CPU with different Front Side Bus (FSB). The T7500 is 800 MHz FSB while the T60 generation of Thinkpads takes 667 MHz FSB such as a T2300 or T7200. My favourtite for a T60 is a T7200. There are also others that are mentioned in this and other threads.

Your HDD might be corrupt or is going bad. Back up all your data now as you might have to get a new HDD soon. Regardless, good time to do a fresh OS install.

Re: BIOS time different

It's fine. Most OS on a lot of devices checks the time against an accurate site somewhere. The BIOS time was not meant nor used as an accurate time piece but is good enough.

Having said that, it's simple enough to hit F1 at reboot and change the time in BIOS.

Coming from an overclocking/underclocking background, no one can tell you what the voltage is for your particular system. The numbers that works for other people may not run stable on yours. At best it's only a target that may or may not work. Do it the old fashion OC/UC way, set your voltage then s...

Going from a HDD to SSD makes a big difference. From SSD to SSD not so much. If the Intel is working good, I wouldn't upgrade unless I want something of larger capacity.

Re: Lenovo, the thermal paste goes on the CPU.

Looks like a fairly typical factory paste job to me. It'll get hard and dries up with time. When you take it off it's not unusual for some paste to be stuck on the hsf and some on the cpu. The factory paste is put on too thick for my liking so I like to reapply it myself.

MLC SSDs are desirable but they are only available in upgraded models and will be more expensive than ...

Re: T60 recommended SSD

Love the T60 machines, I still have one as a daily runner. Most any SSD will be faster than what this machine can handle. Makes a huge difference in speed. SSD are cheap these days so anyone will do. You don't hear much of chronically bad SSDs from any reputable manufacturer.
