Re: Don't get ripped off on an SXGA+ screen for your X61/X62

X60T and X61T complete screen assembly are 100% compatible with each other. It's a simple swap and I've got a few machines with a X60T lid (SXGA+ screen, colour logo) attached to a X61T body.

Except in synthetic benchmarks, IMO no you will not notice a difference in everyday usage. If you are moving massive amount of data all the time then yes but in normal everyday usage that consists of frequent reads/writes of small files, no.

T410, T140, year 2000? I'm confused. Never heard of the T140. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_History

I don't understand the hesitation to download and run the latest version of Knoppix.

Not difficult and cost nothing to download a more recent version of any Linux live CD. Boot from that and see what happens.

Re: ThinkPad T60p Corrupted BIOS- Need Help!

That's assuming the BIOS is not to far corrupt. If it is too corrupt and will not let you flash BIOS, your best bet is to replace the MB. With a T500 generation or older, I still prefer to flash BIOS from a CD drive.

Re: Gmail messages 'read by human third parties'

Don't have to trust anyone Puppy. Up to Win 7 I agree with you regarding MS. The change in Windows policy from Win 7 to Win 10 is what I meant by getting worse. The other viable alternative is Apple OS and Linux. For me it will be Linux but even then I don't fully trust it or someone. Not trusting s...

Like the rest of you, I've come to NOT expect any privacy with anything Google. Unfortunately the alternative is not that much better and is getting worse. The drive to shove "ads" in my face can and is very annoying. More so the older I get. Some of us remember the 1984 novel by George Orwell, IMO,...

I run both Windows 7 and Linux Mint on my various T61, X61T, T500 and T60. Like both OS. Mint is worth trying, it's easy to to install, user friendly and cost you nothing but a bit of time to learn. Worse come to worse you'll learn a thing or two. There are many other excellent flavours of Linux too...

Re: T430: mixing different memory types

Yeah no problem at all. Back when I used to be a fanatical overclocker, I would spend a few bucks on fast matched memory. At best it was a small bump on some synthetic testing benchmark. I conclude it was not worth the time or money for the minuscule benefit. Mind you the OCD in me puts in matched p...

Looking at it holistically, I think you did good. Sure you could probably find it cheaper on eBay or elsewhere but the peace of mind and supporting local out weigh the small cost saving in my books.

Re: unlikely: memtest86+ might have killed Thinkpad T500

memtest was such and is still such a useful tool. I doubt memtest itself is the problem. Most likely it's a result of running memtest on memory, power supply and shaky motherboards. Don't doubt that a stress test is enough to kill a component that is about to fail.

When buying Thinkpads or most any laptop I prefer the higher power power supply. Given a choice, as a buyer I would choose the 90w as it's more versatile.

Re: Should I keep the 65w or 90w power source?

I used a 65w for either one of a T60, T61 or T500 while on the road. Besides noticing that it charges slower than a 90w, I've never noticed much difference between the two. More concern about other things besides charging efficiency. It charges and that's good enough for me. Very very seldom will I ...

Keep both. The 90w is great for docking station and permanent home hook up. The 65w is great for travel as it is smaller even though it takes longer to charge. It's always nice to have a few power supply kicking around in case one fails or goes missing.

Yep, I had the same problem. It will not recognize a USB 3.0 drive as a bootable option. Once Windows 7 or a Linux distro is booted, the OS will recognize it but I couldn't boot from a USB 3.0 drive. My solution was to only boot from a USB 2.0 drive. I found this out when making a dedicated $5 USB 2...

Love the T60s. My daily machine these days is a T60. I have 3 T60 15" and 2 T60 14" all in 4:3 format. I have 1 Frankenpad that hardly gets used. All my T60s have 3 GB or 4 GB RAM.
