Re: Intel T9600

Biggest improvement is a SSD. Depending on what and how you use the machine, additional memory and/or a faster CPU may help. For my portable computing needs, I prefer longer battery life vs more heat and a slightly, most of the time unnoticeable, CPU speed.

Re: Driver Update Recommendations

If this was my machine I would update everything except for the Active Protection because of the SSD. If there's a HDD instead of a SSD that would be different. As for the BIOS update, I like to typically update to the latest just because I like to have the latest BIOS. Having said that, some believ...

Re: Improving T60 cooling by cutting away plastic "lamellas/gills"

Doubt it'll improve cooling by any significant amount. Reapplying TIM and cleaning out the interior is the best and is about the only thing one can do. Only way to find out is to try it and find out. Entire T60s are going cheap enough these days that getting a new base or new laptop is easy and chea...

Re: Li-Ion Battery for ThinkPad

Well I run 2 batteries on my T601f - both dated 2007 (so they're decade old now). 54Wh/56Wh from SONY after 195 cycles, and 68/78WH from PANASONIC after 577 cycles. Not to mention my T43 battery that still holds almost a full charge. So, let's say, their longevity varies ;) Hate saying this but bat...

3rd party batteries always come with 3 parties. The first one is when you recieve the battery after 2 months of waiting. The second one is being surprised a 3rd party battery works fine. The third battery is the one when it becomes a confetti cannon and blows itself to pieces and your laptop too. I...

I doubt the machine will even boot with an unoffical CPU so installing without it would theoretically be impossible.
If one needs BIOS x to install CPU y, it would seems logical really. Otherwise there's no need to install said BIOS and CPU y is indeed supported.

Re: T7200 Upgrade - Max Temps on Intel 14" 4:3 Planar

For the age and general reliability of these machines. Use them, abuse them, enjoy them and move on. I have 6 different T60s in 14" and 15" variety. Love the 4:3 screens, durability and each were had for $30ish Cdn. Each are upgraded to the max (T7200, T7600, 3 GB ram, 6200/6300 wifi card). There's ...

I found USB 3.0 flashdrives will not boot on a lot of mostly older machines, not just a T60. For this reason I use USB 2.0 flashdrives.

Re: T7200 Upgrade - Max Temps on Intel 14" 4:3 Planar

That seems pretty normal to me. My T60 with a T7200 spikes up to the mid 80s while testing with Prime95. Slightly higher with a T7600. At no time did these became unstable or crash. Applying new thermal pasted and cleaning the dust out did help but they are stable and good. The T7200 is a good combi...

I'd try a live Linux distro just to see if the problem is software. If it is chirping in Windows but not Linux then a fresh Windows install might be on order. If both chirping is from both OS then it's hardware.

I'm guessing back in the day, some professional drawing or CAD programs.

Can't see AMD/ATI making separate drivers for a V5700 and HD3650 considering they are the same thing except for more vRAM.

I gave away my W500 V5700 with the ATI driver from Lenovo a few months ago. But I remember it working perfectly with this driver. And you're right, in normal everyday use, hardly noticed a difference between compared to the 3650. I love these T/W500 machines in 15.4" format. Better, hardware wise, t...

These routers are not depending on (lazy) manufacturers who rather sell you a new one, than update their firmware.
Laziness got nothing to do with it. It's all about the $$$. Everyone in every industry is doing it and have been doing it for a long time. We tolerate it so why wouldn't they.

Have you ever done/played around with desktop overclocking? Same principle really. BIOS motherboard is best. Failing that, sometimes software overclocking/underclocking/undervolting will work. As for trusting a 3rd party BIOS, it's just that a 3rd party BIOS. A T61 can be had for $30-$40 Cdn these d...

You don't need to "load" any Linux. Simply download a distribution of your choice for free. Burn to CD or USB key then try to boot from that. The purpose is to confirm that one or both OS will work or neither will work. It's a diagnostic tool. You don't need to do anything with that distro, matter o...

Re: Problems re-loading Win 7 Pro

Could have a faulty component. Download and run a live Linux distro. If it's working OK on Linux then it should load Windows. Another problem could be a faulty CD/DVD drive. If both Windows and Linux will not run on the machine then it's time to find out which component is causing the problem.

Re: Quad Core in T420 - Disable Cores to stay within TDP limits?

Unlike a desktop overclocking setup, it will be difficult to disable cores with a locked BIOS. Not much one can do about the cooling either. You might be able to do it via software. But, you're right, it's kind of a pointless exercise.

Yes, unless the previous owner knows the password.

Having Computrace enabled is bad enough but having supervisor password enabled is worse in my books. Personally a system with both enabled is a no go for me.
