Re: Comparing T60 SSD to T61 Sata 2 SSD, not much improvement?

Yes you should. Having said that, the numbers you got for a T61 is pretty much max for SATA II. You'll only see those numbers with certain large files but not so much with smaller files. Another big advantage of a SSD vs HDD is the very low latency/seek time that a SSD provides. SSD vs SSD this adva...

Flashing from Windows or Linux is always risky. Better to flash from a bootable USB/CD drive.

I've gone away from KVM switches long ago. A better solution is a docking station. They can be had for pretty cheap.

Re: Some recent ThinkPads can be destroyed by changing a UEFI-BIOS setting

If it is a minor feature I can maybe see it. But Thunderbolt? On a laptop advertise to have Thunderbolt and is a feature in which people pay more for? Little sympathy from me. The other thing they are counting on is not everyone raising up enough of a stink and returning the product. Even with the r...

Wow, just wow. Doesn't anyone do software testing anymore besides dumping it on the consumer? A BIOS doesn't have that many features that all the features can't be tested.

Nope not perception. A SSD vs a HDD is as fast as a bicycle vs car on the freeway assuming proper install. A car with 4 flats or stuck in traffic can be slower than a bicycle.

Depends, not all 3rd party battery are the same. You get what you paid for. I try to buy from a distributer who is at least in my country that offers a decent warranty. On the most part I've had good luck with non-genuine batteries. They don't last as long but at a quarter the price I can afford to ...

Re: T61 CPU upgrade T7300 -> T9500

An upgrade to a T9300 is while worth the effort. It will run faster and cooler than a T7700. While you are at it, take the opportunity to give everything a good clean. Apply good thermal paste on the CPU. It's not that difficult to do. Take your time and follow the maintenance manual. It's fairly st...

Re: how to read the HD of a "locked" T41p

Depending on the setting a SVP is not required until something needs to be changed in BIOS, such as when the CMOS battery goes dead and the date/time needs resetting. Without the password you won't be able to do this. You can still get data off the hard drive if it has not been encrypted or password...

Re: how to read the HD of a "locked" T41p

These have IDE (pata) laptop interface so you need to find an enclosure that 1) has PATA interface and 2) is small enough to accommodate a laptop drive. Again, that's assuming the drive still works and not protected by SVP or any other drive encryption. Of course the easiest is to remember your old ...

Overclocking/tweaking without stability means nothing as it's not useful. Stability test along with proper screen shots are key to authenticity otherwise it's just another wild internet claim. That's our retro way of doing overclocking and is a practice that is generally followed to this day. You gu...

Microsoft have been doing this for years. Using the users as testers. Being in a monopoly position this doesn't hurt them a bit. Would not surprise me one bit had this been done deliberately with the intent of promoting or justifying one drive.

You probably have done this already, if not check that all the ports and connection, especially USB ports, are not shorted out. Had a similar problem once, dissembled everything only to realize a USB port was broken and was shorting out.

I agree that this is not unique to NZ. It's a trend that ALL government are doing. What's most disturbing for me is how easily the sheep, me included, have accepted less and less and less freedom and privacy every year. What happen to freedom of speech and being able to say things, no matter how off...

I'm very calm but I know that this can and will happen in any country not just NZ. We as a society have accepted this. There's less examination only because they don't have the time to examine everyone. The fact that most border guards (failed cops) have the power of God over a person for a limited ...

Almost every country is going this route. It's the time that we live in where, in a way, the terrorists won. Governments are finding out that they can do almost anything and pass any stupid policy they want so long as they invoke the name of national security. That's why I got an older smart phone t...

Re: Overheating while compiling an Android ROM

Idle temp of 50+ deg C is too high in my books. New thermal paste might help but might not considering you applied it 2 years ago which is not that long ago. Back then did you stress/stability test the CPU before deciding that it was fit for duty? That CPU will run hot unless you underclock it.

I gave everything a good cleaning and reapply thermal paste which made a significant difference. Wouldn't hurt to apply some machine oil on ...
