Re: Backlit vs non backlit keyboard, is there a tactile difference?

To me "no" while I'm sure others will say "yes". You are asking how something "feel". Impossible for me to say how something feels for you. It really is hard to provide an answer as it is subjective. Similar to whisky, cigars, ice, and a billion+ other thing it's personal preference. Only way to kno...

Re: Eeking out every usable between 2 T60s, 2 1gb ram, and 2 2gb ram pieces.

Love the T60s. My daily machine these days is a T60. I have 3 T60 15" and 2 T60 14" all in 4:3 format. I have 1 Frankenpad that hardly gets used. All my T60s have 3 GB or 4 GB RAM. All except for 1 have a T7200 while the 1 have a T7600. I found the T7200 is a good compromise of speed and battery usa...

Re: Frankenpad value?

A Frankenpad is like a restored car, the owner always think it's worth more than it is. I've seen people ask anywhere from $300 to $1000 US. The market will ultimately determine the price.

Why reinvent the wheel? Have your roommate Google " lenovo t420 bios update instructions", the first link after the search is from Lenovo with detail instructions and videos.

You can use a Penryn CPU in any T61 by simply installing Middleton's BIOS. I'd install Middleton BIOS in all my T61 X61 anyways. I'd be more concern about Nvidia GPU issues.

Re: Why do i want a 10 year old thinkpad ?

A lot of it is being able to afford the toys that you can't afford earlier in life. Speaking of audio, I finally got NHT 1.3 speakers that I always wanted but couldn't afford during my high school/university years. Already got and moved on from the Porsche. Vintage women? Still can't afford them.

Re: T61p with Windows 10 and Intel Turbo Memory possible?

Msata and turbo memory are completely different. Msata was great works like a SSD and just as fast. As stated above, msata only existed with Sandybridge and Ivybridge generation of Intel CPU/chipset. Msata has been replaced by M.2. Personally I wouldn't bother with a SD card via an adapter as it's n...

Re: T61p with Windows 10 and Intel Turbo Memory possible?

Turbo memory was a stop gap tech with the intended purpose of speeding up HDD usage in Vista and Win 7. With the popularity of SSDs, Turbo memory was redundant and slower than a SSD so even Intel dropped it. I found at best it was buggy and did nothing. At worst it causes system crashes in Win 7 and...

Call it whatever you want, freezing or crashing, it's the same thing. This is not a problem limited to a T60 but can happen to any device. On and off, I've been using a T60 (various config) as my daily driver for 6 years and never experienced this problem you're talking about on a regular basis. Sur...

Re: Optimizations

I've found the biggest improvement in battery life that I can do is choice of CPU/GPU and not having too much garbage programs running on my system. For example upgrading from a T7700 to a T9500 really helps on a T61 machine. Along with choosing an Intel GPU, energy efficient SSD and more energy eff...

I don't bother with security on my everyday work laptop and a lot of my other machines. No password, none, nada, nill. Even my Linux machines have the bare minimum security (i.e. automatic login, no password required). I have 1 desktop and 1 laptop that is in a physically secure (within reason) room...

Re: Problem about memory

I find new memory warranty is only as good as the vendor. Some vendor can determine the date by the serial number on the label. GSkill was good with this. I sent it to them and they sent a replacement. Used memory can and is a crap shoot. Also, considering the age of your machine it could be the mac...

Dual mode is not that important. I doubt in normal usage you'll ever notice dual mode. I've mix and match memory size and chip all the time. 95% of the time there's no issue at all. If your budget is tight, 1 additional memory will not be a problem. Others will tell you that unless you buy brand X, ...

T9300 over T9500 because of price. I do have a T9500 and like it. Yes that's the Intel card. I'm not that picky when it comes to a SSD. Having said that I do prefer a MLC vs TLC but unfortunately everyone is moving to TLC. Not a fan of Sandforce controllers even though the latest few Sandforce contr...

Re: Can I install Middleton BIOS on T61p with Ubuntu Mate?

Good job, well done. It's not that difficult once you know the methodology. Similar principle applies to updating firmware/BIOS for a T61 or as I did recently my home theater receiver. You can use almost any version of Windows (32 or 64 bit) or most any Linux to burn a disc image (.iso file) to CD/D...

Re: Can I install Middleton BIOS on T61p with Ubuntu Mate?

If you use a 64-bit version or another operating system you have to burn the included ISO-file on a CD or DVD and boot from it. This statement from the ThinkWiki is pretty straight forward. If you don't know how to boot from CD/DVD, now would be a good time to Google "how to boot from CD". This is ...

I seem to collect a lot of the 80 to 120 GB HDD that came with T60/T61/T500 generation of Thinkpads. They are great for distro testing. Pop the SSD out of one of my Thinkpad, in goes a test HDD. Load distro, play, abuse and use. Like or no like? No like, format HDD and carry on to the next one. I'll...

I run Mint in a few of my Thinkpads. Love it.

It's Linux, it's free. Try it and pick the one you like. All it cost you is a little time while the trade off is you learned a thing or two. Not a lot of risk and doesn't cost you a dime.

I agree. For a $40ish (or less) laptop don't scrutinize it to the same level and time as a new car. At the very minimum check that the battery, if it comes with one works, A/C plug-in works and boot to BIOS. Most times I go a step further and boot into Parted Magic via USB. Parted Magic boots in abo...
