Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

I seem to collect a lot of the 80 to 120 GB HDD that came with T60/T61/T500 generation of Thinkpads. They are great for distro testing. Pop the SSD out of one of my Thinkpad, in goes a test HDD. Load distro, play, abuse and use. Like or no like? No like, format HDD and carry on to the next one. I'll...

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

I run Mint in a few of my Thinkpads. Love it.

It's Linux, it's free. Try it and pick the one you like. All it cost you is a little time while the trade off is you learned a thing or two. Not a lot of risk and doesn't cost you a dime.

Re: Recovery for Resale?

Recovery is restoring the cloned image of the laptop when it left the factory. Recovery will bring it back to the day it left the factory. It will wipe everything on your existing drive. Windows update will work fine after recovery, just as it updated fine when first turned on after leaving the fact...

Re: Please give advice on purchasing a used IBM Thinkpad T60p in 2018

I agree. For a $40ish (or less) laptop don't scrutinize it to the same level and time as a new car. At the very minimum check that the battery, if it comes with one works, A/C plug-in works and boot to BIOS. Most times I go a step further and boot into Parted Magic via USB. Parted Magic boots in abo...

Re: Bypassing Security Features on X6x / T6x era Thinkpads

Computrace vs BIOS security password are 2 different things in my book. I hate Computrace and don't use BIOS password on any of my laptops. I've learned to reset password on a few laptops and find the concept works with old and newer laptops. As for car radio, any authorized dealer or service center...

I agree jdk, sounds like a politician. Lies lies lies. Can't tell me that Lenovo can't talk to a Chinese manufacturer and get it done if the will is there.

Re: T43 with SSD has slowed down

As you said, the SSD is pretty much old, try to remove unnecessary data, and use 'Defraggler' software. That will help your SSD to re-arrange the data, that will help the OS to retrieve the data in more faster way. Hope this will help. Data fragmentation is not an issue with SSD. There is not spinn...

Can't live without Windows? Stick to Windows. Willing to learn a new trick? Try Linux but do it on a spare machine and wheen yourself slowly off the Windows drug. I like to think that I'm not so dependent on any one software that I can't live without it. There are different ways of doing things and ...

Re: SXGA+ from other laptops.

I don't think so as the connectors are different AFAIK. I do know that the complete screen assembly fits perfectly in a X61T body making for a simple Frankenpad mod similar to the T60/T61 mod. I have about 4 X601T in this configuration that is awesome. I use it more than my T601 Frankenpad.

Last few T61(p) I got was around $40 Cdn each used. The last few T500 I got was approximately $60 Cdn each. None had a HD, charger cable or battery. If found the screen and keyboard quality of both to be near identical in terms of quality. None compares to a 4:3 Flexview but was not bad either. I fo...

Re: Seeking Advice on a Potential T61p Purchase

$80 US is over price for a T61p in my books. For a few dollars more this machine that RBS is selling is a much better machine and value from a trusted seller. There's not much difference between a T500 and a W500. A T500 will be cheaper to upgrade to 8 GB RAM and have native SATA II support while st...

Re: T61p 15.4 - Keep or ditch for W500

I notice a bit of a performance boost going from a T61 to T500 but then my computing needs are not that high. A T60 is sufficient for my everyday portable computing needs. Anything requiring processing power is done on a desktop. If I were in your shoes I'd probably go to a T/W510, within reason, up...

Re: Windows 7 loses randomly drivers after rebooting

Windows doesn't lose anything. Either the improper driver is installed, in which case Windows will not load it at next reboot. Or the driver was not installed properly. Also is AHCI mode enabled in BIOS? If not the driver may not load if the mode is set to compatible. Personally I would not install ...

Re: [Is it Possible?] Installing a WWAN card alongside WiFi Card for 4G Data

I used to bother and hassle with a WWAN card which is limited to 1 or 2 laptops. A better way is to set you phone to hotspot tethering and use the wifi off of your phone. Better, simpler, and works with all devices. If you want to use the WWAN slot in your X61 then you'll have to find a WWAN card ad...

Re: Spectre/Meltdown BIOS and CPU

They are still identifying the security flaw and taking some time to find an effective fix without too many side effects. At least that's my optimistic view of what they are doing. At the microcode level, I would assume, it's not something one rushes into without proper thought and testing.

Who cares. Seriously, consider the age of these machine and the person using it. This is one security flaw is that is seriously overblown. Re: Can an X61T be upgraded to a useful extent?

For my computing needs, a X61T is still very useful. I don't do anything too CPU/GPU demanding on my laptops as I have desktops for this purposes. The CPU on a X61T is soldered on so it's not an easy CPU swap. A SSD, T7700 CPU, 8 GB RAM and a decent wifi card is about as high an upgrade as I'm willi...
