Re: Compare installing one W10 with seven(7) Linux distros

Took a while but the Windows fanboy have showed up. I use what works for me and use both Windows and Linux. Too bad if someone dislike a certain post. It's a mostly free speech board, deal with it. No one is forcing anyone to read anything.

Re: Compare installing one W10 with seven(7) Linux distros

I tried about 10 different distros on various machines before settling on Linux Mint. Currently running 3 different version of Mint on different machines but haven't decided what flavour I like best yet. It's been stable, easy to set up, and able to run everything I need to run.

I find that the "L", low power, memory modules will not work on some older machines. You could also have gotten a bad memory module too.

Re: Compare installing one W10 with seven(7) Linux distros

I've seriously started playing around with Linux since Windows 10 came out. Linux, for me, is a viable alternative. I've let friends play with a Linux laptop and do long term trials. A surprising few are liking it very much and have asked me to build them a Linux box. When Windows 7 is no longer via...

I agree. I find the WXGA+ to be a significant improvement over a WXGA screen on anything larger than 12".

I got a few T60 running a T7200 and I like it. Good balance of power and battery consumption. Sounds like you have a bad RAM module.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

They said this when they announced the device. Soldered SSD was even touted as a feature, because apparently it saves energy. Watch this: https://youtu.be/pnFVKycmbQs?t=10m23s "Up to one TB, if you choose, PCIe SSD, and that is integrated directly onto the motherboard..." Wow, I hope that isn't the...

Re: NEW LOOK TO THE OLD FORUM..

The new look, looks busier and more cluttered. Having said that, the author's box on the right have a lot of empty unused space on a 1080p screen.

On the functional side the site is much faster. Thanks Joe.

Re: Win7 Pro 64 / Linux Mint

Drives are cheap, even a modest size SSD. I used to dual boot Linux and Windows from 1 physical drive. Nowadays I simple load Windows on 1 drive, Linux on another and physically swap drives or on some system simple choose which drive to boot to by hitting F12.

Yep, sounds like a classic case of BSOD due to temp caused by insufficient cooling. Reapplying thermal pasted and giving everything a good clean to ensure airflow will typically solve the problem.

Re: X201 new than / warm processor and crash system

Sounds like something went wrong with the re-pasting. Check your temps with HWMonitor. When CPU temps reaches 90+ deg C, it's going to crash. The fan speed will kick in and out depending on temp. Also check your Windows power management settings. A X201 is runs fairly cool and quiet. Something is we...

Re: SD ram card as extended memory vs. SSD allocation

No not even close. The main factor is the interface. When compared to RAM, any external add-on is not even close to RAM speed. When compared to a SSD, I highly doubt the interface and OS overhead is fast enough. What machine and OS are you using?

^ OP is thinking of a motherboard replacement/upgrade, not the screen. His X60T had Libreboot pre-flashed, but he wants the original BIOS back. Unfortunately, a backup of the original BIOS was not included, and there's this warning on the Coreboot page for the X60 : You need to re-read what I wrote...

Re: Thinking about upgrading my thinkpad x60 tablet.

That's a great screen on the X60T. It doesn't suffer from the bubbling issue of a X61T. X61T are nearly as cheap as a X60T. Get a X61T, the complete screen assembly from a X60T will fit into a X61T body (MB, chasis and all). It's an easy simple swap. I've done this for 4 different X60T screen with X...

Re: I thought I wanted to retire this X61 Tablet...

Still a serviceable laptop. Buy a new hinge or better yet buy a cheap T60 tablet with SXGA+ screen. The complete screen assembly from these two models are a drop dead replacement for each other. I prefer this modification better than a T601 Frankenpad. I like the smaller size.

Re: ThinkCentre M82 Processor upgrade to 7th Gen

M82 is from the Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge (2nd and 3rd generation) so no you can't put a 7th Gen Intel CPU in there. You need to change at the very least MB, CPU, RAM and possibly OS. CPUZ is a good tool. Every 1-2 generation Intel have been changing sockets. On top of that there's a switch to DDR4 RA...

Assuming it's not just Windows 10 that is crashing on you, I would find out what's causing the crashes. If you're getting the same problem running a live Linux distro or Windows 7 then you can assume you got a hardware issue somewhere. You might be having crashes due to CPU temp problems. Download H...

Can't go wrong with the 3 antenna 6300 or Atheros 9380. If you have a machine that only have 2 antennas, then no harm no foul. If you have a machine that takes 3, the extra antenna is a benefit. Seriously don't over think it. Can't go wrong either way.

I would find out why it's crashing before ordering any replacement parts. What's the temp like? If temp is not the problem may start removing parts and see if it still crashes.

Not a fan of Atom CPUs. Pretty anemic performance wise. It was Intel's answer to ARM CPUs. Even Intel have pretty much given up on Atom.
