Re: Seeking Advice on a Potential T61p Purchase

Last few T61(p) I got was around $40 Cdn each used. The last few T500 I got was approximately $60 Cdn each. None had a HD, charger cable or battery. If found the screen and keyboard quality of both to be near identical in terms of quality. None compares to a 4:3 Flexview but was not bad either. I fo...

Re: Seeking Advice on a Potential T61p Purchase

$80 US is over price for a T61p in my books. For a few dollars more this machine that RBS is selling is a much better machine and value from a trusted seller. There's not much difference between a T500 and a W500. A T500 will be cheaper to upgrade to 8 GB RAM and have native SATA II support while st...

You click on that link? No wonder people need anti-malware, antivirus programs. I read RBS' post, had a laugh and decided not to contribute to the click bait or take a chance on catching something unholy.

Re: T61p 15.4 - Keep or ditch for W500

I notice a bit of a performance boost going from a T61 to T500 but then my computing needs are not that high. A T60 is sufficient for my everyday portable computing needs. Anything requiring processing power is done on a desktop. If I were in your shoes I'd probably go to a T/W510, within reason, up...

Re: Windows 7 loses randomly drivers after rebooting

Windows doesn't lose anything. Either the improper driver is installed, in which case Windows will not load it at next reboot. Or the driver was not installed properly. Also is AHCI mode enabled in BIOS? If not the driver may not load if the mode is set to compatible. Personally I would not install ...

Re: [Is it Possible?] Installing a WWAN card alongside WiFi Card for 4G Data

I used to bother and hassle with a WWAN card which is limited to 1 or 2 laptops. A better way is to set you phone to hotspot tethering and use the wifi off of your phone. Better, simpler, and works with all devices. If you want to use the WWAN slot in your X61 then you'll have to find a WWAN card ad...

Re: Spectre/Meltdown BIOS and CPU

They are still identifying the security flaw and taking some time to find an effective fix without too many side effects. At least that's my optimistic view of what they are doing. At the microcode level, I would assume, it's not something one rushes into without proper thought and testing.

Re: Spectre/Meltdown BIOS and CPU

Who cares. Seriously, consider the age of these machine and the person using it. This is one security flaw is that is seriously overblown. As of today, with regards to Spretre and Meltdown, there's still a lot of unknowns so rush fixes have a higher probability of causing more harm than good. These ...

Re: Can an X61T be upgraded to a useful extent?

For my computing needs, a X61T is still very useful. I don't do anything too CPU/GPU demanding on my laptops as I have desktops for this purposes. The CPU on a X61T is soldered on so it's not an easy CPU swap. A SSD, T7700 CPU, 8 GB RAM and a decent wifi card is about as high an upgrade as I'm willi...

SODIMM • DDR2 PC2-5300
To correct your original post, the key word is is DDR2. This generation of T/X61 takes DDR2 not DDR3. I found that most name brand non-low voltage DDR2 Sodimm works on mine. Unfortunately, even after all these years, they are not cheap.

This is the crucial memory that I have installed in both our T61p laptops and in our X61 and X61T laptops. No problems: 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.5V 512Meg x 64 I just looked and I don't see the paired kit on Cruscial's website anymore. DDR3 in a T/X61? Now that is SUPER i...

Thank you for posting the legacy link. But,specifying T400 gets no dvd/cd/ultrabay drivers. Just a firmware update utility program. For unknown reasons the driver on my T400 was corrupted. Un-installing and reinstalling automatically gets the same results, an Exclamation point in the device manager...

I hear you. Just install a 64 bit OS and move on. I don't know of any program that will run only 32 bit AND is not 64 bit OS compatible AND don't have AND will never have a 64 bit compatible version. I could be wrong.

Temps while idle or modest use is OK but won't tell you much. Those temps are a bit high for my liking. Having said that I'm always one to reapply thermal paste after 4-5 years. It's not that difficult to do and you'll learn a whole lot too. And I like having a clean machine with new thermal paste. ...

I've ditched new Thinkpads with the change from the classic keyboard to the chicklet keyboard commencing with the T4/530 series and onwards. I still buy and use T4/520 and older Thinkpads and frequently use a T60 as my everyday beater. I much prefer some Elitebooks or Lattitude for newer machines. N...

I can't speak for the OP, but in my case, it's not always about practicality. As an audiophile I completely understand so long as one is aware. Laptops are j...

Re: Just bought a T61, few questions *PICS*

That's a lot of money, tinkering and work on a 10 year old laptop with marginal reward at best. Install the SSD, upgrade the RAM to 4 GB and possibly a T9300 if you can find it cheap. Load it up enjoy and when it dies due to Nvidia GPU failure move on. The SSD is worth spending on as it's something ...

Re: T61 available RAM - confused

Nothing confusing, just 32 bit OS limitations. Lots have been written on this subject. 32 bit OS will only recognize 3 GB. Some Dell and HP laptops are able to recognize a bit more but never the full 4 GB. Install a 64 bit OS and you can install up to 8 GB on a T61.
