Re: w500 upgrade path for broke student

Hi, I was just handed down a magnificent w500 for college this fall. Its week 3 and I am already eating lentils 3 times a day. So, I would love suggestions on how to spend my meager upgrade budget to get the most bang for my buck and avoid any bottlenecks or wasted upgrades. This machine will for w...

Re: Anyone here own an L440?

I've installed Debian LXDE on the L440 and everything is working well. The flawed screen went back -- twice -- because the seller originally sent me an inaccurate shipping label and I got it back. It appears that the seller I went with is the only Canadian-based operation with reasonable prices. Eve...

Re: Anyone here own an L440?

Got a good L440. Ordered and received a 1080p IPS screen. It's an Innolux. Nice screen, but it has a dead pixel in the middle of it. Messaged the eBay seller to see if they'll exchange it. It seems like this entire process has to be painful.... Oh well.

That's how I have scrolling set up on my ThinkPad Yoga 260. I like having the two-finger click set up as the right click as well. It makes a touchpad without bottom buttons bearable.

Re: Anyone here own an L440?

A poster from another sub-forum had a good comparison/overview of the differences between the T-series, L-series, and the E-series, and may we quote it here for your convenience: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=68&t=129103&p=836523 E series aren't really ThinkPads in my book - despite th...

Re: Now I've done it...

I've had a couple of days to explore this new Dell G3... Nice review. I have a Latitude 5480 at work. I barely ever use it (except to print ... they have a proprietary printing system they're unwilling to install on personal machines), but I'll check to see if it has scrolling on the touchpad. The ...

Re: What thinkpad models that features lifting keyboard?

Well, in the realm of the ancient models, I know that the 365X and 365XD had the lifting keyboards. It was quite handy, but came at a cost. The keyboard feel wasn't really that great (flex and bounce) and the latches that secured the keyboard had a tendency to break. IIRC, they might have also doubl...

Re: Thinkpad + Linux = I really want to learn !!

Any old ThinkPad should serve the purpose. I suspect that the X270 in your list is a typo, given the price range stated. Get an SSD or the experience may be painfully slow. Ubuntu is a good distribution to start with. There are some old online guides that are really useful for learning the command l...

That seems like a very high end machine to me. The specs are well beyond my regular needs, though on occasion all that power could be useful (when compiling your own software, etc.). It would actually be more interesting to hear from you what the machine is like. I've thought about purchasing a gami...

I wish I would have read this thread earlier. I have a Latitude 5480 at work. I don't mind the feel of the keyboard, but it misses keypresses on a regular basis. I have found some decent deals on these (under CAD $100). Does anyone have any experience upgrading the L440? It looks like cpu, ram, ssd, and screen upgrades are possible. I got this because I’m an old keyboard addict

There are people here who know a lot more about this than I do, but I recall threads that discussed three different keyboard manufacturers for a single model, each with a different feel.

So I suspect that it is possible that you will detect differences between the keyboards.

If you can either convince Huawei to add a trackpoint or find out how to put one in myself, I'd get one. Yes, I'll miss trackpoint, but Bluetooth mouse is acceptable. Trackpad Lower Button Repair

This isn't really an R500-specific post, but since I did it on my R500, I'm posting it here. The left click button on my trackpad was wearing out (losing it's clickiness and also getting less responsive) but the right button was fine. So I popped the palmrest this morning and removed the lower butto...

I use it on my Windows 10 laptop at work. I've styled the start menu and taskbar to look like the Windows Embedded theme for XP, which was always my favourite.

Like others in this thread, I've worried that it was going to stop working with each update of Win10, but so far, so good.

Re: Finally the correct description of what Americans call football.

I'm a long-time fan of Canadian football, err, armpit-eggball. The Canadian game is faster (shorter breaks between plays), more wide open (bigger field, more space, and forward motion permitted prior to the plays, so the receivers get a running start), and only has three downs, so there's ...
