Re: lenovo near to being dumped

Assuming the HK market is similar to US markets, being de-listed from the exchange doesn't mean they'd be out of business nor even that their stock couldn't be traded. I thought at first that the issue was the company being de-listed as well (because of the very misleading headline), but that's not...

Debian 9 / LXDE on an R500. It's still as good as the day I bought it.

Re: 365XD RAM limit

Yes. The official limit for the 365X/XD is 32mb in the SODIMM slot (plus the 8mb of onboard RAM). I can't remember for sure, but I think I might have had to update the BIOS on that 365X to get the 64mb stick working, which compounds your problem if you haven't been able to perform the BIOS update. I...

Re: Microsoft is putting Windows on the back burner

I switched to Linux a long time ago at home. But I still use Windows for work. I have to, since IT loads their own disk images and restricts access to key functionality like printing and network drive access to systems using their software. I'm not sure what MS is doing with Windows. It's hard to be...

Sent a 365XD to LarBob last week. He let me know when it got there and the whole thing went really smoothly. Good guy to deal with.

Re: Seeking Advice on a Potential T61p Purchase

Ihaving a DisplayPort could be handy (for connecting via an adapter to HDMI projectors). I forgot to mention in the initial post that I also need to deliver presentations. Don't you hate when someone adds to their requirements mid-way through? I do. :( Anyways, I'm not sure how good an image you'd ...

Re: What exactly was the R series trying fit?

According to Thinkwiki, the R-Series was meant to be a cheaper model, which does make sense for the E/I type R series, but otherwise they usually come with more features (Firewire, QXGA LCD on R50p, S-Video(I think), Etc..). It would seem like it would be the heavy desktop replacement machine like ...

Re: Seeking Advice on a Potential T61p Purchase

Thanks for all the advice, guys. This has always been a great forum. I'd super gladly buy a container of well-shaped T61p's in 15,4" ratio for $40 each. May even be USD and not CAD, seriously. I'd super gladly pay $80 if the shape is good. Personally, I think that $80 is a great price for a good con...

But I can recommend to update the R500 LCD with a Sharp WUXGA (lq154m1lw2a or lq154m1lw02). Thanks for the update RBS. I s...

Seeking Advice on a Potential T61p Purchase

Here's my situation. My employer gave me a new Dell with a very poor keyboard. I can't stand it, and am looking for a serviceable replacement. At home, I have an R500/T9600/3GB RAM/SSD/1280x800 LCD, with which I am satisfied, though I have long wanted to change the LCD (and should do). A seller near...

Re: Is the x120e considered a "real" ThinkPad? and the laptop is slow, how to speed up?

You should seriously consider Linux for old ThinkPads. Browsing in firefox latest is very fast for a low-tier AMD E-350 with 2GB ram (at least it's DDR3, even if it's slow 1066MHz it's better than DDR2). Wine for old apps (such as Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete, legit the only reason i still ...

Re: R500 CPU Upgrade Questions

So I finally got around to doing this upgrade. The parts came a long time ago, but I got busy with other things, and it seemed like maybe the T9600 upgrade wasn't a good idea for a machine that already ran a little on the hot side. Well, the T9600 and the new fan are installed, and the machine runs ...

What do you do with Linux?

Almost everything: browsing, word processing and spreadsheets, Skype, music and movies.... The only exceptions are for a few proprietary programs (BlackBerry Link and autoloaders) and interfaces that won't work with anything but Windows. I've been trying not to buy anything like that for a few years...

Re: Your favorite free O/S

I like Debian. If you look around for the 'nonfree -including firmware' version, it has a lot of extra drivers in the .iso. My R500 (also Core2Duo) runs very nicely with Debian and LXDE on the Desktop. It's my everyday machine, and has been for a few years. XFCE might be a better choice if you want ...

Re: ThinkPads on the job

I still use my A30 occasionally to do typing at work. We have Dells at work with crappy keyboards and overly sensitive touchpads, so when I need to do some heavy laptop typing, I will sometimes bring out the Pad. It's gotten a raised eyebrow here and there from my students. They have no idea what a...

Re: What computer have you had for the longest? When did you get it?

A Toshiba Satellite 2410 laptop. It's a 15" model with a P4M processor and an Nvidia gpu, bought new in 2003 for somewhere in the neighbourhood of $2500. That seems crazy now. Later, I upgraded the RAM to 1GB and added an internal wifi card. The hard drive is still original. The screen resolution is...

I have an R500 and it's my everyday machine. Mine was a bit of a dog (from day one) with Windows Vista, but it remains very usable with a light Linux desktop (I'm using Debian LXDE).

Re: Prototype notebook with 3:2 LCD

When is the laptop industry finally coming to its senses, in that a (business) laptop is for WORK, and NOT for watching movies? OUT with this stupid 16:9 pronto! Revert back to 16:10 or 4:3 screens! Since they're making 3:2 panels, it would be nice to see a 14" or 15" ThinkPad with one. I liked 16:...

You seem to be on Win10, so should be fine. I have no idea which revisions of Linux support it. I'm mostly on Linux, windows 10 came preloaded on a 100gb hdd that I was using just for test. My setup is a 500gb Linux+1TB for storage. I will buy that device, but first I need to make sure that I can d...

Re: Compare installing one W10 with seven(7) Linux distros

I find that if I set up a light Linux system (usually Debian with LXDE), it is much faster than Windows on weak hardware. I'm not sure that a full install of Gnome or KDE would be much faster than Windows. But LXDE is so much like what I enjoyed with Windows 10 or 15 years ago that I have no desire ...
