Re: T400 keyboard parts and nomenclature

OK, now I recall the perforated/solid base difference when I was getting the T400 years ago. I had a T61p prior.

Will a T61p keyboard work? I think they are the same, just the case was wider?

Re: T400 keyboard parts and nomenclature

OK, that's an option I guess. I wasn't aware of any big difference between the keyboards. I used to have a T61p before this, maybe this one is slightly less firm or "clicky?" Do you just buy a T61 or 60 board and insert it, or swap parts?`If it is not too difficult, I'd get the older one and retro it.

T400 keyboard parts and nomenclature

I need help with replacing some keyboard parts. I was replacing my touchpad and palmrest, and I thought I'd clean the keyboard. I was overzealous with the brush and I lost one of the silicone/rubber "caps" that provide the return. Then I broke two of the hinging pieces that hold and orient the key (...

Re: Tips on buying a T420/T420s/or T430?

Thermal paste ex-factory is usually of inferior quality, applied excessively and quite often dried out. I don't quite understand; do you mean the factory paste is inferior and badly done, or jobs done post-factory are typically this way? This has the factory CPU, no mods. I had read about the solde...

Re: Tips on buying a T420/T420s/or T430?

So very, VERY much good info here! I went on vacation 8/19 and wasn't around to follow in a timely way. We went to Oregon to see the eclipse totality and are now camped out (figuratively speaking) on the beach for the rest of the week. I was intrigued with the comment about a qc i7, but from what I ...

Tips on buying a T420/T420s/or T430?

My step-son needs a laptop as he starts 9th grade this fall. I was thinking of getting him a T420. I want to run my thinking by the forum to get advice. I will likely buy a 2nd one for myself so being similar would be a bonus. I am currently using a T400 I've upgraded RAM and use an SDD with, and I ...

Why didn't my new RAM work (T400)?

I purchased a 4GB Samsung DIMM to upgrade the memory in my T400. I did some research and saw that they could sometimes be finicky so I ordered a PC3 2-Row, Samsung 12800. I received a PC3L and it was 1 row. Is that likely the reason? Likely the 1 row issue, or also the low-voltage? What do I need th...

Thank you for your help again RBS. I"ll work on that later tonight. I can plug in an ethernet cable directly to it and it works, so it should not be hard to find those and install.

T400 wireless not working

The answer to this may be: a )that a Windows 7 problem, or b) "You can't do that anyway, fool." I have a T400 available, using it as a backup for my T61p which just failed. Instead of copying a ton of files over, I tried the expedient of just plugging my T61p's ssd into the T400. Voila, everything w...

The PM software said the battery was good and charging (see above). I just left it in and went about my business for this past week. Sleep/hibernate/shutdown. Pulled it out once in a while. Re: t61p won't start - UPDATE - CMOS fixed, battery won't ch

Nope, nothing I try makes it charge, though the machine reads it and calls it's health "good." I must have shorted it while diagnosing the CMOS somehow; it happened the same day. Too much time, in my experience, tinkering under the hoods of cars, motorcycles, and humans over the years to believe in ...

t61p won't start - UPDATE - CMOS fixed, battery won't charge

Last night I had heartbreak as my T61p refused to boot. Lights show power source and battery, but nothing when you hit or hold start button. I had previously shut it down a few hours earlier and all was well. It is a late buil T61p with the corrected gpu. It's been well cared for, upgraded and littl...

T400 - screen flicker intermittently

I have a T400 (Win 7Pro 32). It has started having two pixel lines near the top flash intermittently every few seconds. Random colors, straight horizontal lines. It seems when this happens the rest of the screen momentarily moves up one or two pixel lines, then back down. It's actually not that anno...

Emeralgirl08 - thank you. That is a lot of very useful information. I was leaning towards T500 and that really helps. Ajkula66 - do you say that because of size alone or some greater ruggedness of the T400? I assume just because of size - correct? By old memory I meant having to find DDR2 if I got a...

Help me choose - T400, T500, or W500?

I need a capable machine for my partner. I've had T42p, T43, and now I have a T61p. I've upgraded it to a T9300, new bios for a/g/n, Samsung SSD, 4gb. It is late build (09/08?) post -Nvidia problems. Love it. I'd like to get the same thing for her, but finding another late/last build T61p isn't prac...

Re: Need a 2nd laptop: Suggest a sister-machine to a T61p?

I have WSXGA+, not WUXGA. I was confused on UXGA vs. WSXGA+.

Yes, looking at specs and thinking time/cost/effort, this time arround it may be a W500. Though they seem a little hard to find, may need to look at T500 specs and see if something there would also do.

Re: Need a 2nd laptop: Suggest a sister-machine to a T61p?

I thought WUXGA meant 1920 x 1200? Mine is 1650 x 1200-something. I thought.... maybe it is 1920 and I just run things at 1650, I'll have to look. I had a flexview before this so in my opinion this is mediocre, though adequate. I assume it's only the display quality you are talking about, not the re...

Re: Need a 2nd laptop: Suggest a sister-machine to a T61p?

They are very fine machines, but some of them (just like T61p) were shipped with Samsung WUXGA panels which were atrocious in my experience. I don't have any experience w/those; my p is UXGA and it's OK IMO. I'll keep that in mind and avoid WUXGA either way, thank you. Probably the W500 is the way ...

Need a 2nd laptop: Suggest a sister-machine to a T61p?

I have a T61p I am extremely fond of; this forum helped me sort it out last year. 08/09 build T61p with the fx570m. I added a T9300, upgraded bios/N card, and a 160gb Samsung 830SSD. I love it. I need a 2nd machine for my partner; her old HP w/XP is just not cutting it any more. I know that tech-wis...

User provided data and vendor reviews would seem to be anecdotal to me. It tends to skew the perspective negatively. If one were to re...

The problem with your methodology is that it's all anecdotal and people with an issue tend to be much more vocal than those who do not. Actually, it's not anecdotal. That flashing of the bios thing to get it to recognize all 4 gigs is new to me. The flashing was to get the SataII support and more wifi card selection. When I edited my "laundry list" of observations, I was not clear (fixed that). If you have Vista/32 or 7/32 on it, that's what limits the RAM acce...
