Re: Thinkpad T61 hard drive upgrade

Not sure that my budget can stretch to an SSD at the moment... Until it can, does the lack of limits on brand and size also apply to HDDs? (I have found bits online about how you can use W10's own backup function to clone a drive onto a new larger one, so I think that part of my question has been an...

Thinkpad T61 hard drive upgrade

I recently bought a T61 with Windows 10 pre-loaded. As the current HDD is only 100GB, I'd like to do as I've done with all of my previous Thinkpads (R32, T41 and T42), plus those of the rest of my family (T21 and T43) and upgrade the HDD to a larger one. I've got cloning software that I've used for ...

Re: T41 security chip issue

Fitted the new CMOS battery, tried the 10 presses and..... It's alive!!

So it seems like, in this case at least, that trick works for a security chip issue.

Thanks for all the help!

Re: T41 security chip issue

I thought at much, but you never know! As I've not got one in the house, I've ordered one online and am just waiting for it to arrive. Once I've got it swapped over, I'll give it a go. Just to clear things up, is it a total of ten presses, nine each of ten seconds, and then the tenth for thirty seco...

Re: T41 security chip issue

Thanks for the tip. Will that work with a dead CMOS battery, or should I replace that first?

T41 security chip issue

I have a T41 that I use mainly to run programs I don't want cluttering up the HDD on my main laptop. Today, I went to fire it up as I had something I needed to do on it, and encountered a couple of issues. When it first booted up, I got the bleeps and numeric error codes that I know signifies it nee...

Re: T21 display problem

Assuming that you still have an inactive display (and I'm assuming that the replacement panel is still installed AND was guaranteed to be functional), then the next thing to check is the fuse. I believe that fuse F5 on the T21 is the one that protects the inverter board. You can find it just "below...

T21 display problem

I've got a bit of a problem with a T21 that I'm hoping someone here can help with. A little while back, my Dad asked me if I could fix the T21 that he uses as his home recording studio to make CDs of him playing the organ that he gives out as gifts to friends who like that kind of music. All he told...

Re: T42 1802 error suddenly appeared when backup battery failed

OK, that's fixed it!

Took the card out, ran no-1802, reinstalled the card and it all booted up smoothly.

Thanks for the help!

T42 1802 error suddenly appeared when backup battery failed

A few days ago, my T42 that I've had for about 3 years suddenly refused to boot up, giving the BIOS codes I recognised as indicating that the backup battery needed replacing. However, it also gave another code I didn't recognise, which was "1802 - Unauthorized network card is plugged in—Turn off and...

Re: R32 display problem - Possible failed video chip?

Thanks for that, and you seem to have confirmed my suspicions as to it being related to the GPU and associated parts. I've checked the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the R32, and it doesn't say anything about being able to replace the video memory, which suggests that it is integral to the system b...

R32 display problem - Possible failed video chip?

Hi! After 10 years of faithful service being used every day, I've got a problem with my trusty old R32. It boots up fine but, after about 5 minutes, the screen goes funny (blocky and covered in fine vertical lines) and becomes totally unusable. I've tried plugging it into the PC input on the TV via ...

Do I have the T41 GPU problem?

I've recently started having problems with my T41, and it seems from what I've read, it could be the dreaded GPU issue. It boots up fine, and runs for a while (usually something like 30 minutes). The screen then suddenly goes black, but there's still HDD activity, as if it has gone into hibernation....
