Re: X210 CPU cooling improvement options?

Hi, I have a cool update (no pun intended...or, maybe). I replaced the stock thermal paste (some gold stuff) with my trusty (old) Arctic Silver 5 and re-ran the tests. The results are actually pretty good. First, here's the cooler I have (the 3-pipe one) and the paste which was on there before I rep...

Re: X210 embedded controller fixes (was: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control)

Hi,
Thanks for the tips. I installed tlp, r8168, patched i915 (psr confirmed), ASPM is L1 for all PCI devices and I added the command line parameters from earlier in the thread.

Now I get C9 and 3W idle even WITH WiFi connected :D

Re: X210 embedded controller fixes (was: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control)

Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear. Here's a screenshot of what I see now, on average. So you're saying the estimated number is just bogus? With the i915 patch + the new EC I was able to see the display backlight wattage drop from about 6W (before mod + EC) to under 3W if I got lucky but obviously I...

Re: X210 embedded controller fixes (was: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control)

Finally had time to play with the power saving stuff. Patched the i915 and uninstalled WiFi for testing - now powertop reports between 3-4W, which is nice. However, it also says "Battery reported" power draw is around 12W, at the same time that two lines down it says 4W. Shouldn't they be the same, ...

Re: X62 problems, quirks, and fixes

May I continue to recommend the Azurewave AW-CE123H card? Bluetooth 4.0 and Wifi ac - plus it's Broadcom-based so it'll work on a Hackintosh if you so desire. My workhorse for many, many years.

Re: 51nb X210 macOS 10.15 Catalina Hackintosh EFI

No worries, a dual boot with Windows 10 works great as well. The only issue I have now is that the Clover version doesn't seem to work with coreboot + Tianocore at all, but I've been told to use OpenCore instead. Have you tried an install with OpenCore, and if so do you have a guide / tips? Thanks, R

Re: 51nb X210 macOS 10.15 Catalina Hackintosh EFI

Hi-
Just want to report this is working ok with the 2880x1920 screen as well.

I'm sure there's some way to get it working with proper brightness control as well but I haven't tried anything.

Thanks for the EFI!

Re: X210 CPU cooling improvement options?

Hi, Needed some tweaking (there's no AC* in the /sys/bus/power_supply for example) but it does appear to be throttling, yes. Temps reach 90C+ after a few minutes, but it does manage to keep the frequency at or near 3.9Ghz until that time. Now the dissipation is around 32W. Guess I should go find my ...

Re: X210 CPU cooling improvement options?

BTW you have a letter "R" stuck to your messages. It's my first initial :D As far as the throttling, I can't seem to make it work right. My temps hover around 81-85C running "sysbench cpu run --threads=9 --time=600", but it still throttles to 3.5Ghz and dissipation is around 25W. I've set TDP UP in...

Huawei ME909U-523 - get GNSS working?

Hi, I picked up a Huawei ME909u-523 at a lab liquidation - it works great for LTE with my T-mobile SIM so that's great, but I can't get the GNSS portion of the card to work. Supposedly the card is meant to show up as several serial ports (including one for GNSS) but I only get the one for LTE. Under...

X210 - change BIOS chip size from 8MB to 16MB (guide)

Hi there- I wrote up an article on how to change the size of the BIOS chip from 8MB to 16MB. This is useful if you're running coreboot, then you'll have more space for more / larger payloads. It's not TECHNICALLY specific to Thinkpads - the method should work for any platform. I just did it on the X...

Re: X210 WWAN /mSATA port does mPCIE!

can the firmware reconfigure it? I have no idea. There's also a 3rd option, "GPIO", it's the same way the M.2 port decides between NVME or SATA-based drives...some pin could be set. Without schematics though we'll never know if that pin goes anywhere. Also, turns out I might have spoken too soon......

Re: Project: Thunderbolt 3 on X210

Quick update - the freeze can be gotten around by enabling "Peer Memory Write" in the BIOS. Now my dock connects and functions correctly, but I don't really have any devices to test PCIe passthrough (eGPU etc).

Re: mini DP to HDMI -- explanation?

Not sure about the hardware you have, but for HDMI conversion to work a passive adapter, you need what's called DP++:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPo ... ode_(DP++)

Otherwise you'll need an active adapter.

X210 WWAN /mSATA port does mPCIE!

Hi- Just wanted to inform the community of an undocumented revelation I just tried - KBL-R has "Flex-I/O" SATA + PCIE ports. OOTB, the 2nd slot is advertised as WWAN / mSATA only. However, if the slot is connected to one of these Flex I/O ports, then it should be remappable to (m)PCIe (assuming the ...

Re: Anyone tried non-storage devices in X210 M.2 slot?

Hi,
For PCIe cards, I pulled ~12V directly from the battery contacts. The mPCIE USB-C cards should "appear" without external power, afaik it's just pass-through power for the downstream ports.

Also, I DID manage to get the Thunderbolt controller working - see my post a few rows down :D

Project: Thunderbolt 3 on X210

Hi, For those of us who have an X210, you might have noticed the lack of USB-C and / or Thunderbolt ports. My work is particularly Mac-heavy and there are a bunch of Thunderbolt docks and screens around the office, which was the stimulus for this project. I've been toying with it since last year, bu...

Re: Coreboot on the X210

I'm still having trouble with long boot delays. 20 seconds on EVERY boot, it looks like it's redoing the RAM training each time.

SECURITY_CLEAR_DRAM_ON_REGULAR_BOOT is NOT set.

Does anyone have a clue why coreboot would be spending 20 seconds on FsPMemoryInit anyway?

Thanks,

Unaccounted-for battery draw on X210?

Hi, Maybe a silly question but this has me stumped. I'm currently using coreboot with vladisslav's EC. I've got a 9-cell X201 (8.6Ah nominal) battery I'm using. Pretty old, according to Battery Bar it's 17.5% degraded. That should put it around 70Ah, subtract another 10 for fudging and bad specs, wh...

Re: X210 embedded controller fixes (was: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control)

Hi, I've found a funny issue with vladisslav2011's EC. I built an otherwise working coreboot image against the latest master. On Linux, I get 14 brightness steps and everything works great. On Windows (10) brightness control doesn't work at all. It still registers the key events in that I see the on...

Hey, Has anyone tried turning an X210 into a Hackintosh successfully? I've gotten most things working on Mojave except for graphics.
