Re: Help! I need *another* new ThinkPad!

Upgrade to Linux. Run your 16-bit programs through dosbox. The x60 I am writing this post with runs Debian 8 and is using 360 MB of ram. I will admit that your efficient RAM usage is rather impressive, a level I don't think I could achieve on my system even with optimizing and cutting down my backg...

Re: Help! I need *another* new ThinkPad!

Hi Pete, I appreciate the offer, but as I said, I'm not interested in Windows 7. Windows XP has some pretty annoying defaults but it's fully customizable to work in a sane, standard way. Vista and later are designed intolerably badly, and aren't customizable at all, so I'm always infuriated whenever...

WTB: T60p or T601 ThinkPad!

Hello everyone, I am hoping to buy a new T60p ThinkPad or T601 FrankenPad. These are my desired specs: Functional cooling system. My current machine overheats and forces shutdown usually more than once per day. Hoping for around a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU. That's what I have now, which seems like a g...

Re: Help! I need *another* new ThinkPad!

As I said, I have had a look at the T420, and while I definitely see the appeal for a lot of people, especially if you want to "upgrade" to some newfangled version of Windows, but I am not interested. Last time I made a post asking about a new ThinkPad, almost exactly five years ago , I was told that...

Re: Help! I need *another* new ThinkPad!

I just came across this page: http://theboardroom.info/t61motherboard.html Is this what everyone is talking about with as the T60[p]/T61 FrankenPad?? It sounds like a pretty big upgrade, especially with the doubled SATA speeds, as I am planning to upgrade to an SSD. I still would worry about perform...

Re: Help! I need *another* new ThinkPad!

Thanks for your replies! I appreciate your concerns, as I do spend a lot of time Web browsing and while I thought a dual-core, (or even hyperthreaded virtual dual-core) was such a luxury and all anyone would ever need, but it never happens that way, does it? I had a look at the T420, and while I can...

Help! I need *another* new ThinkPad!

Hi everyone! As you can see from the title, the time has come that I once again need a new ThinkPad. In 2012, I extensively reviewed what was available, and found that the best ThinkPad available at that time was a T60p. I've been very happy with it ever since, but now, not only do I want a number o...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I don't think you understand how good Retina monitors are. You'd think the gloss would be a problem, but my sister uses her MacBook Pro in direct sunlight and the backlight is so bright that it's perfectly readable! Really incredible! (especially compared to my weak ThinkPad screen that's only viewa...

Re: What operatings systems are y'all using on your vintage ThinkPads?

Long ago, when I was young and stupid, my "techie" friend thought I should upgrade my i Series 1500 (my first and most beloved ThinkPad) from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. At the time I didn't understand formatting disks or the difference between MS-DOS and Windows NT, so I probably lost a lot of file...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Have you noticed transition from dynamic-width web design to fixed-with one ? I definitely have! Many Web sites like Facebook, Sourceforge, and others now require a vertical scrollbar on my XGA ThinkPad (1024x768). XGA has been standard for so long, but now with these wider Web sites, I find XGA+ t...

Hello all, I have been having this issue intermittently on my T60p running Windows XP for ages now but just figured out the solution! I didn't realize that all of these were strictly museum pieces.
Thanks for the recommendation!

WTB: Reflective/Transflective ThinkPad

Hello, Hopefully this is a better place to post! I am looking for a secondary ThinkPad which can be used in various ambient lights — mainly something that won't keep me up at night, though the ability to use it on a sunny day (like in direct sunlight) would be nice as well. Now, according to Wikiped...

Hi Khipata,

I'm still hoping to buy one of your monochrome or otherwise reflective/transflective/front-lit/usable-in-low-light portable machines!

Thanks,

Re: Reflective/Transflective ThinkPads!

Interesting! Mine is a 15" T60p with plain old TFT screen to clarify (DEFINITELY not FlexView, as I learned after ordering it!) :P Also, I have seen the X60 advertised as "MultiView" which I read somewhere it was transflective, but it's still backlit, so it might be good outside, but I can't imagine...

Reflective/Transflective ThinkPads!

Hello fellow ThinkPadders! :) I have a wonderful T60p that I love dearly and use daily (despite its broken rollcage) but the monitor is pretty sensitive to the ambient light. It is usually fine indoors but the screen isn't very bright so it's not really usable. It isn't very even either, especially ...

Re: T60 T61 fan lubrication - illustrated guide by msb0b inside

Hi, So, for those of us still using our T60s: Did any one particular lubricant result in a permanent repair? To me, "permanent" means 2-3 years of 12 hour/day use. Besides the fluids and greases discussed upthread, I've also seen graphite recommended elsewhere. With new fans available for $10 and co...

I happen to have a full copy of Windows 98 SE with genuine product key still in the original shrinkwrap with an AOL trial disc and setup guide, but I think I'll be keeping it around just in case I need it — you never know when you might need something like that!

I'd check eBay if I were you!

Re: Upgrading an I-Series 1410/1450?

I'll just add that I upgraded my i Series 1400/1500 ThinkPad to Windows 2000, and I think it's quite a bit slower, though your life will be much easier getting modern compatible software like an up-to-date Web browser!
So yeah, it depends on what you want to do with it for sure.

Good luck! :)

You're welcome!

Yeah I guess if you have an android phone it would be great to have continuity between computer and phone browsing. I've tried to do the same — it'd be great to have the favorites on both, but I use a BlackBerry so I couldn't get that if I wanted to! XD
