Re: T41: fan broke but do i really need it???
35c for cpu? Sounds like you are reading the wrong temp (sounds like the HD temp). CPU temp is usually 40+ for me. You need a fan. yes, I will get it and install it...but.. note, that temp depends on : - place where you live/room temp - how you use your comptuter - if CPU is downclocked etc.. Now, ...

T41: fan broke but do i really need it???
Hi, I was getting fan error message on the bootup...I pressed ESC and machine started w/o fan. I always run centrino hardware control (CHC) on my machine it downclocks major system resources to increase battery life. It also shows CPU/HardDrive temperature - it is quite normal WITHOUT FAN! 22-35C......

T42 fell off coffee table and ...
So, due to the obvious clumziness and carelessness of the owner, my T42 (it was closed) fell off the table in the coffe shop. It went down like this: "jing..clanck..ka-boom-boom- boom.." The audience with empathy gasped and "oh'ed" while all of this was transpiring.. Then I heard few of "ohh, that's...

2 aspects to quetness: - fan; - hard drive; Hard drive is the hardest issue. My verdict: with stock 40gig drives on all boxes, they are all pretty much the same. I have upgraded my T42 to Fujitsu 40G drive and it is much quieter than other options. If interested, search for threads where I have part...

Dimon I presume that the clicks you refer to are the sound of the heads moving. Have you set the drives to optimise for quietness rather than speed? David I used Centrino Hardware Control to set Accoustics Management to quiet. Not sure whether this info is picked up by HDD. If you know of any other...

Single platter 4200rpm Hitachi or Fujitsu drives are probably your best bet. Got Fujitsu 40G single platter. Much quiter when spinning comparing to 5400 rpm 40G Hitachi and Seagate. You need to strain yourself to hear it... BUT, regular clicks are more noticeble. If only there was a way to get rid ...

Just popped Seagate 60G 5400rpm into t42. As noisy, if not more, as 40G 5400rpm Hitachi. Soooo, 4200 rpm is the next stop for me... Any recommendations on high perf 4200rpm drives? I have read that some are using larger cashes etc. Can you fit 1.8 inch drive into T42? If so, how do they compare to 2...

Thats interesting, which 5K drive? According to Hitachi's site, the 5K80 should be a little quieter than the 7K60. Was it disc noise or head noise? Both IBM drives I have are 5K40. I can't compare it to 7K60, since I don't have it. I figured that 7K would be louder. Head/disc noise?I think it is a ...

Dimon You are quoting stgreek's words, not mine. Now that I have a TP with a 7K60, I definitely hear the drive spinning and while I can understand why many people would find it acceptable, I am actively seeking quieter options. To help gather information, I started the following noise related threa...

Re: Quiet T Series ?
In general, the less RPM the drive has, the quieter it is. However, the Hitachis are considered the quietest two-platter drives, and despite the few complaints you see in the forums, many people (me included) can reassure you that you wont hear a thing. Well, "wont hear a thing" is not the same for...

I am running just default IBM apps, which take ~280 Mg... I have total 750 Mg of RAM. The CPU does peg to 100% then drops. This is causing the jumpiness. I have tryed this is both high perf and adaptive mode. So this is somehow the function of the machine and not what I am doing. Note, I have tried ...

Jumpy text scrolling on X.
I have received X32 and am trying it out (1.6 G/ 758 RAM)
Noticed that scrolling the web page (googled for BLS) is much slower then on my old A20m (14" old box, specs are much worse) and on DELL (14", better specs). Movement is kind of chunky/jumpy. I am lost here. Is it due to smaller screen?

How much battery life is used by monitor?
I wonder , roughly, how much of battery life goes towards monitor? Say, on average T42 can get 5 hr of battery life during some non graphic intensive work. What if at the same time monitor was turned off, how much more juice will this add to battery? Once in a while I have to monitor some processes/...

Quietness: X32 vs X40 vs T42
I would like to have the level of noise coming from fan and/or harddrive to a minimum. How would you rate above models in terms of overall noise level? Thanks!
