Re: How many of you no longer own laptops?

So I still have a laptop (not counting retro devices), but I certainly wouldn't call it a daily use device. Basically, I went from a ThinkPad T60/T61p QXGA frankenpad as my primary computer, to a MacBook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2012, because of the screen. Ultimately, though, I found that I really wanted...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

You can actually use larger images, but scale them to a certain px (not pixel, but px, which is defined by the W3C as 1/96" - in practice, it's not, but at 100% scaling, it's 1 pixel, at 150% it's 1.5 pixels, at 200% it's 2 pixels) in HTML. Then, the browser renders the image with whatever quality i...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Technically, FrankenPad refers to any ThinkPad that is assembled from an assortment of different models' parts, ala Frankenstein's monster. However, it's often used to refer to a 15.0" 4:3 ThinkPad T60 or T60p chassis with a 14.1" 4:3 T61 or T61p motherboard installed. You'd do this to get the 1600x...

It is worth noting, by the way, that Apple had never sold a laptop with an IPS screen before 2012. So, while Lenovo did backslide, it wasn't like you could get a Mac laptop with IPS before June 2012.

(Also, the Samsung panel doesn't have the image retention issues of the LG panel.)

Re: Anyone still using their vintage Thinkpad?

The BJC-85 is an ancient printer - it's literally a BJC-80 from 1998 with USB 1.1 added. It's got infrared, but no bluetooth.

There is a driver in Windows Update, though, for it - even on Windows 10 64-bit.

Do note that there's four different LCD panels for the 365XD - 10.4(A), 10.4(B), 11.3 DSTN, and 11.3 TFT. The parts are all different for each model, and IIRC the only way to tell which you have if it's 10.4 is to open up the lid. If it's 11.3... if the color and contrast is absolutely awful, it's D...

Here's specs on the Skylake mobile SKUs, by the way: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/09/skylake-for-laptops-faster-core-m-and-ultrabook-gpus-with-edram/ Relevant to ThinkPads are the 15 and 28 W SKUs of the Skylake-U, and the Skylake-H SKUs. Possibly most interesting are the 28 W Skylake-U SKUs....

So it seems the 'real' thinkpads (if you can call them that today) are not affected: T/W/X series. Even if this is the case, it makes buying anything from Lenovo uneasy. Who knows, maybe there is spyware in newer thinkpads that is buried much more deep and better hidden on their business models. Th...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

The split in display closure methods is interesting. (It's worth noting that I voted for latchless magnetic closure, for what it's worth - I quite like it from my actual use of it on non-Lenovo machines.) Also, interesting that the status quo logo got a majority. I actually liked the Think P a d , a...

I'd have to get an M4800 in front of me to verify what options are available, but you can definitely disable the pad independently of the buttons. In other news, there's some conflicting images. This is apparently a P70 motherboard: http://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_MG_5741_7_0d...

I'm not sure that's a middle scroll button - on the Dells that I support, the one for the pointing stick is for scrolling, the one for the trackpad is for middle-clicking, and you use two-finger scrolling (like a Mac) on the trackpad.

Doesn't look that way to me... if you read through this you'll see that the battery is actually glued in . Yes, that's right, glued to the underside of the trackpad. For a tech , not for an end user. The technician just grabs a new top chassis, which replaces the keyboard, trackpad, and battery all...

To be fair, I'm surprised there's an ExpressCard at all. And, if you have to avoid downtime that much, that's why you pay for NBD on-site service, and possibly keep loaner devices around. Consider the success of machines like the MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch, though. While it's not ISV-certified, it's fairly similar hardware to a 15" workstation-class machine (contemporaries to the first generation (Mid 2012) were the W530, Precision M4700, and EliteBook 8570w). It's worth noting that the M4800 has a 3200x1800 option today, and the M3800 has a 3840x2160 option today.

Still, those are 15.6", and the M6800 (the 17.3" machine) is just 1080p I believe.

Oh, and they did sneak an optical bay into the P70, on the left side. (Which, to be honest, is a point against it having that much more power... although I'd still be surprised if it was stuck with a 55 W graphics solution, and I'd expect 100 W.) It's also worth noting that the Sossaman parts were only ever intended for blade server applications, and they were just dual socket versions of the Core Duos anyway. I'd actually argue that the "business users" you refer to don't want a solid old-school, built to last 10+ years, ThinkPad. Really, the retro ThinkPad is something that I'd think can only work as a prosumer product. Large businesses tend to want something that will get them through a 3 year refresh ...
