To enjoy Debian, you are expexted to read a little bit :) But I will point your in the right direction: https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList#Component You need to enable nonfree repos in sources.list Next: apt-get install intel-microcode firmware-linux-nonfree Got it skx. It's never too many laptops when they are organized and identified and enjoyed :-)

Esp if they are Thinkpads and such classics.

Re: Requesting Help Finding Modern Linux Distros for T60

Thank you TRS-80. I'm storing this info and will get back once I've installed Debian. First time ever seeing 'dmesg' - So thank you for the info! Unfortunately, I'm on the road and only have my primary Windows machine on me at the moment. So unless I pick up another ThinkPad over the weekend (could ...

Re: My 6 weeks of trying Linux Distibutions

Anything that stops a machine from working out of the box, is a bit of a hassle. That's just the way it is in the modern era where smartphones have taken over and thanks to Apple we have soldered down everything but the power cord on most laptops for saving a millimeter of space and losing all but o...

Re: My 6 weeks of trying Linux Distibutions

If you have an Android phone, you can use its USB tethering feature. Have the phone connect to the Internet via WiFi, plug it to the computer via USB, then enable USB tethering. Boot the Debian installer. It will detect the phone's USB connection as a virtual LAN port. Once Debian is installed, add...

Re: Requesting Help Finding Modern Linux Distros for T60

Debian is the best choice... but many people are scared as they perceive it more complicated as Ubuntu or Linux Mint (false argument if you ask me) or too boring compared to distros like Arch... but Debian is able to do everything you want it to do and this in probably the best maintained distro of...

Re: SD Card Reader not Mounted on Elementary OS

This should work out of the box. Not too confident in Elementary OS as distro which focus more on eye candy compared to stability, but this reminds me to a bug from years ago. Can OP post his fstab? nano /etc/fstab and post it here... in the past there was an SD card entry mentioned when installed ...

Re: Debian do you also experience these pbs ?

The i915 is the Linux driver for Intel chipsets. Unfortunately that set of error messages are quite generic errors on all sorts of display driver or adapter issues. Have you tried running any other Live ROM distro through USB to see if the same kind of errors occur? There are a few workarounds to ha...

Re: My 6 weeks of trying Linux Distibutions

If I ever get really thinking about Privacy and safety, I'd probably use only Tails or Septor to use the Internet and even that with an iota of caution. Don't have any hands on with Subgraph, but that appears to be a choice as well. At this point, the sacrifices in comfort and speed are not worth th...

I decided to move back into Linux after a decade and a half of using just windows on all my machines Curious though, 2006 was about when Windows Vista was coming out. I decided to move back into Linux after a decade and a half of using just windows on all my machines and after a few queries on here I settled on Elementary OS as my OS of choice for a couple of weeks, but a SD Card issue and boredom made me start trying a few other distros and I ended up running th...

After going through Elementary OS, Linux Mint 20, Zorin and AntiX on my T430, I've finally settled on MX Linux 19 as my regular daily driver, although I still do have the X230 running Windows 10 20H2 as a backup.

Re: SD Card Reader not Mounted on Elementary OS

Maybe the card is formatted using a file system that is not supported / not enabled by default in your distro? It does say FAT32 on it. I'll reformat to double check. It's certainly not NTFS as it worked fine on the old Canon 500D DSLR. It's a rather old card as well, and is on it's last legs. The ...

Re: Windows 10 might have killed my ThinkPad

It's darn near impossible for Windows 10 to have 'killed' your Thinkpad. At the end of the update/setup process, all the OS does is a request for reboot along with a temp change in boot request if there are further steps needed upon first boot. I'd suggest basic hardware troubleshooting such as remo...

Re: T420s always underclocked

Chnage your profile to maximum performance and see if the CPU clock speed doesn't dip in speed as much. It will run much warmer with constant higher clock speeds. I just came back to take the post down, cos it was just the same. Moving to maximum performance brings the CPU back into the 2.3 to 2.53...

I upgraded my T420s from Windows 7 to Windows 10 at launch and for the last few days it always seems to be underclocked even on full load. I tried exporting a bunch of images from lightroom and the CPU is at 0.78 Ghz throughout. Restarts, Drivers checks and Clean boots don't seem to have an effect. ...

Re: Windows 10: Supported Lenovo machines

Considering that I just upgraded my T420s to Windows 10 in a straightforward manner, it just means that Lenovo just wants to keep their butts safe on machines more than 3 years old. The Sandy Bridge machines being the last of the classic series is probably another reason. Maybe they just want users ...

Re: USB 3 express card and T61. Is it worth it?

If yours has a smart card reader/cage, then you can replace it with an express card/cage. Look on eBay for "lenovo 42x3828". These are all the same and fit in T61/T400/T500 and others. You'll also need to remove the slot in front of that PCMCIA cage and replace it with a 'flap'. To do that you'll h...
