Re: W500 with broken magnesium frame

Wow, I didn't think the magnesium frame would be an easy part to find, but I guess it is. Definitely makes sense to go that route. Replacing that part looks like it is certainly going to give me practice disassembling a thinkpad :)

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

Yes, non-free needs to be enabled in the sources.list file. For me, this is usually done during the initial OS install; when doing a net install with the advanced option, it asks if you want non-free software enabled by default. I do not know if it asks this when not using the advanced option. No i...

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

I do the install over ethernet. During the install, debian generally detects your wifi chip and tells you the exact package you need to install (at least it does when doing advanced net install). Then its just a matter of, on my X200s for example: ... Most wifi cards require binary-only firmware bl...

For those of you running Debian, how do you get wireless working? I think I'd like the stability and weight of Debian. I do the install over ethernet. Re: Throw me Distro suggestions!

BunsenLabs is good for working OOTB (out of the box)

I prefer doing Debian Net Install without the GUI installed from the installer, and installing something like OpenBox or IceWM once the system is up and running.

Re: Help - How to get drivers for Radeon x1400?

On Debian and Ubuntu based distros, you should not get drivers from websites unless as a last resort. They should be installed from the package manager. We need to know what driver you currently have loaded. Please run the following command to show us what driver you are using: lspci -k | grep -EA3 ...

Re: Linux Mint Installtion

I do not think a 600X can boot from USB. I think you should install completely from a CD. Linux Mint and even anything that uses XFCE or LXDE will not run well on your machine. My suggestion is to install Debian with either IceWM, OpenBox, or FluxBox. A few other distro choices would be Puppy Linux,...

Re: Positive feedback for FAIR Traders

I bought an X200s from brucehe. The unit was extremely well packed, shipped out quickly, and cleaner than it looked in the photos. The included battery is at nearly 100% capacity. Super easy to deal with. Thanks!

W500 with broken magnesium frame

With my first time attending college coming up and having just received my tax refund, I went in a Thinkpad buying frenzy and bought 3! Thinkpads within about a weeks time. One which I decided I will not be using for school any time soon is a W500 that has a cracked magnesium frame near the VGA port...

W500 LCD Upgrades and Mods Qs

Hi all, I picked up a project W500 with 1920x1200 LCD. I just have a couple questions. 1 - Can this panel easily accept an LED mod? 2 - Are there IPS panels of at least 1920x1200 that have been swapped into W500? 3 - If I ever need to replace the mainboard for any reason, what other model mainboards...

I might not mind any bubbling issue. I just need something for school and really my only concern is resolution. Well, I want something that can stay powered on through a 3 hour class and preferably not too big and heavy.

OK. Do you know the result of trying with no adapter? For example, is there a garbled image, no backlight, wrong colors, etc.? Also, has damage ever occurred from trying with no adapter?

Main concept is placing CCFL IPS/AFFS LCD into X200 CCFL LID.
Thanks very much for the links. I am only considering this mod if I can keep an LED backlight. What prevents use of an LED/IPS screen?

Re: X200s / X201s IPS mod

1 - NO. X200s with WXGA+ LCD have different (thin) LID and normal IPS LCD didn't fit inside.
So if I got a 1280x800 X200s/X201s, would the IPS/AFFS LCD from my X200 Tablet fit into that? Or could I replace my 1440x900 lid with one from a 1280x800?

Thanks again

Re: X201 Tablet motherboards into X200s

Why an tablet mainboard?
I foolishly assumed the X201 Tablet mainboard was the same as the X201s, and hastily purchased one as it was the last one the seller had left.
You'd better would have bought an X201 I7
I wanted an "s" model for the lighter weight, and X201s models are very rare

X201 Tablet motherboards into X200s

I wanted to convert my X200s into a ULV or LV i5 or i7, so I bought an X201 Tablet motherboard. However, the limited information I have found online have suggested this may not be a very straight forward swap. Can anyone enlighten me as to what would be involved in this?

Thanks

I would also keep an eye on that SSD, Kingspec is famous for having high failure rates... :( How would this manifest itself? Actually, that's a Banias CPU in there, only some of the X41s shipped with Dothans, but none of the X40s. I hope you're wrong, because I specifically chose the 1.4GHz model because I thought it was surely a Dothan. According to ThinkWiki, all X41s had Dothan, and all 1.4/1.5/1.6 X40s had Dothan. Im...

X40 Linux under-clocking, under-volting, and fan speed

I just recently obtained my first ThinkPad, an X40. CPU is 1.4GHz Dothan, RAM is 1GB. I installed a 32GB KingSpec SSD, and installed Debian Testing. Kernel is 3.2.0-4-486. My main priorities are to get this thing to run cooler, followed by increasing battery life. What speeds in MHz can I use? Is 60...
