Re: Forum donations for upgrades

Popped in with my $20 as well. This has been a great resource for me across nearly a dozen Thinkpads, and many years of great user collaboration. Thanks Bill!

Re: X31 and alternatives to XP

I have an x41 which is a different animal, but I've owned it from new and the world evolved to make it and me obsolete. I run mine with a mSATA card and a PATA/SATA converter board. Not sure if there is a hardware hack for the X31 that would do the same thing, but the SSD made a huge difference in p...

Detection error 2100 HDD0 not accessible

I've owned my X61 for 10 years. Yesterday it would not boot and gave me a detection error 2100. I vaguely remembered getting this message when my original hard drive died, but now it is on its second SSD, a 500GB Samsung EVO. I still had the previous smaller SSD, so I put that in the drive bay, but ...

Re: Upgrading --> x220 to a x250?

I find I get 5-6 hours with the 9-cell battery using my x220 with the IPS screen. A bit less if I'm running a lot of heavy-duty statistical analyses or video conferencing. I've been using an x240 at work and hate the keyboard/trackpad, but the x250 is better, I think. The x240 has really remarkable ...

Re: Windows 10: Supported Lenovo machines

The only ThinkPad-related frustrations I've experienced are: [*]Bluetooth appears to be always on (at least the indicator LED is). This could be because I upgraded to Intel 7260AC wireless with Bluetooth 4.0, so will probably just have to live with that.[/list] i had this problem as well. When I bo...

Re: Windows 10 Sleep hibernation problems

I was struggling with this as well. I discovered that I was letting Windows Update run in the middle of the night, which would wake up the computer, even when on battery only. Also needed to uninstall Intel control center, which was checking for updates frequently. If you discover that your computer...

Re: Windows 10: Supported Lenovo machines

My experience on the X220 has been similar to that of Josh5K. I have not tried everything, and I did have some mouse issues (see separate posts), but everything seems to be working, and each day things actually seem to be working better. I have not made any objective measurements, but it seems like ...

Re: Annoyances X220 under Windows 10 -- Fixed MOUSE hovering

My problem with disappearing windows is Fixed! The poor pointing stick has multiple control programs giving it instruction. Windows seems to have mouse options, Lenovo has some more and there are some specialized Synaptic menus as well. I couldn't find one to solve a major issue I've had since upgra...

Annoyances X220 under Windows 10

I've been testing my X220 running Windows 10 for the past 3 days. For the most part, things seem to be working well. I'm still checking things like battery life and everyday usage. One thing that continuously annoys me is the pointing stick actions. I have disabled the trackpad in BIOS ever since I ...

Re: Became a X41 owner, what to do?

I still regularly use my X41 for note taking and even a little web surfing. I really like Peppermint Linux, quite lightweight, yet still nice gui and interface. I did install a MSata drive, and even though throttled by SATA I, it's still much, much faster than the old Hitachi 1.8" drive. It is entir...

Re: Fast GUI distro for x40? ez install and wifi setup

I can wholeheartedly recommend Peppermint Three, which is a branch off Lubuntu (see Peppermintos.com). i don't have the patience for patching distros to get them to work, so I was very pleasantly surprised to find this one worked out of the box. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and I'm v...

Bringing new life to my old X40 Thinkpad

I wanted to sing the praises of my rejuvinated X40. I bought mine new over eight years ago. Even though I've had three Thinkpads since then (x61, x201, x220), the old X40 was one of my favorites. I just like the keyboard better and the tall screen (especially compared to the wide-but-short x220). I ...

Re: Is "2.5 IDE to mSATA" a viable upgrade for an IDE Thinkpad?

Actually, I'm running win XP sp3. I've downloaded the Intel SSD toolbox, which supports periodic trimming on my Intel drive. If you are running Win 7, you may have some issues via the PATA connection.

Re: Proud new owner!

Congratulations on your new computer! I agree with you about the keyboard. I actually bought an x230 and used it for a week, but returned it because I did not get along with the keyboard. Now I have an x220 with the Core i7, a 160GB SSD, and the IFS display and I like it a lot. The keyboard is clear...

Re: Upgrading wireless adapter to 802.11ac?

Life on the cutting edge... So Intel has officially released the AC 7260 wireless adapter. I have one installed in my x220 now. I was able to flash my BIOS with the latest patched version 1.38 8DET68WW (8duj24us) from mydigitallife (whitelist removed, as modded by Serge008). This allowed me to boot ...

Re: Questions about the x220/x230

Yes, my eyes are not good enough to see smaller text. So at the same physical text size on a screen (height measured in inches/millimeters), I get fewer lines per page. I must stick to a physical representation of a page; I can't just let each line float to the edge of the screen as in normal typing...

Re: Is "2.5 IDE to mSATA" a viable upgrade for an IDE Thinkpad?

It's working for me too on an IBM x40. I got the Chinese eBay mSATA to IDE adapter (making certain to get the 3.3v version not the 5v version). Picked up a used 80GB Intel 320 mSATA drive for $70. Used the original R&R restore disks to re-install all the Thinkpad factory settings. Speeds are terrifi...

Re: Upgrading wireless adapter to 802.11ac?

Well, I'm still proceeding apace, undaunted so far. The Intel AC 7260 wireless adapter is available in China, and "ships from the factory" when ordered in the US (e.g. comes from China). PC Superstore (AKA Erie Computer) had a listing for it, but told me they could not complete my order because the ...

Re: Upgrading wireless adapter to 802.11ac?

Well, I guess I'm going to be the guinea pig on this one. I wonder if Lenovo still whitelists the Wifi adapters in BIOS? I had this issue when I replaced the wireless adapter in my X61, or maybe it was the X40. I forget. At that point, someone had created a hacked BIOS that I was able to use to run ...

Upgrading wireless adapter to 802.11ac?

My understanding is that Intel has released their latest AC adapter that should work in the X220/x230. Does anyone know for sure that this will work? see http://ark.intel.com/products/75439/Intel-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-7260 I'm looking at putting in an AC bridge for my home business. I would like to ...

Re: Questions about the x220/x230

First) Yes, I was not clear in my post, but my first comment was about the X230 island keyboard. I tried an X230 for a week, and returned it. I type about 3-4 hours per day and it wasn't cutting it for me. YMMV Second) It's not a matter of resolution, it's the physical space. The Lenovo change from ...

Re: Questions about the x220/x230

Well, as the new owner of an X220 coming from 6 years with an X61, I think I can address the keyboard question a bit better. I find the X220 keyboard a little more "springy" than my X61, although that could well be the effects of 6 years of nearly daily use on the latter. When I tried to do some ser...
