Re: Which BIOS / flash chip is used on the X210?

Mine used MX25L6408E, i fried it and replaced it with a W25Q64FW that works.

Re: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control?

It is challenging to poke the SPI flash with an external programmer: the EC gets powered as well and pulls all the signals the wrong way. It seems like i have to find a level shifter to hopefully power the flash chip enough to talk to me while the EC is underpowered.

Re: X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control?

Poked the firmware downloaded using flashrom and then dissected with UEFITool (https://dump.[censored].net/files/pixovuk/ec-fw-candidate.bin) with ghidra a little and it looks good: the architecture is CR16C and the entry point seems to be 0x100. I'm yet to understand why do i see quite a lot of unr...

Wrote HOPE at 51nb, if he won't answer, i'll play with Ghidra. EC seems to be CR16C+, and its firmware resides in the BIOS flash.

X210 EC datasheet/better brightness control?

I found out there are only 15 levels of brightness in X210, and the lowest level is a lot more brighter than on proper Thinkpads, and it makes me hate it in the dark (the battery isn't happy either). The EC seems to be Nuvoton NPCE985LA0DX, and i was unable to find a datasheet on it. Can anyone help...

Re: Heat and fan noise and coilwhining with x210 ?

So how hot is the x210 during idle ? during load ? 54° at "idle" (running browser, playing music and [censored]) now. does tpfancontrol even works on the x210 ? I couldn't find a way to control the fan. Also, is there any coil whining with the x210 ? There is a lot on the x201 and I hate it. Yes, i...

Re: X210 ThinkVantage button

I don't know about you, but I don't think I've ever actually used that button for anything. Likely one of those wierd deep hardware things like the thinklight and how it can be controlled by windows through some nasty BIOS calls and custom assembly code. It's a handy key for enabling the screen loc...

Re: X210s

How are you getting the CPU temperature so high? My fan is nearlyalways off and there is no heat on the bottom or side from average use -- fan only kicks on if I'm doing a lot of heavy work, such as compiling. Even during hours of repetitive memtestx86+ runs, the reported temperature was maximum 45...

Re: X210s

This is really strange since i have already compiled for ~10h on it and never encountered any problems. Maybe the microcode fix was applied to your board already? Mine is part of the third batch (delivered from the factory in Dec 2018) and perhaps they forgot to apply the patch to the third batch. ...

Re: X210 fan and battery communications

Not really an answer to my questions, but https://github.com/erpalma/throttled/ can adjust CPU temperature ceiling and display CPU power consumption (among other immensely nice things) that can be used to tune the battery performance of X210 and other newer Thinkpads.

If anyone is using their system without these issues, which RAM are you using, and what BIOS settings did you tweak. Re: 51nb motherboards and spill protection?

Taking care and steps not to spill anything around the laptop would help too. Fortunately I never had an accident around a computer. Beer and drinks are placed in a way that when, not if, it spills there's nothing of value that it can damage. On airplanes the laptop, tablets and phones are stowed a...

Which kernel and distro are you using? I'm still using debian jessie with kernel 4.8 (need to upgrade badly). I'm getting battery read outs just fine. When I installed kernel 4.9, I was getting ACPI read error on bootup. Gentoo, 4.20.6. I get the other battery data just fine, but no current (/sys/c...

X210 fan and battery communications

Hi there, i just got the third batch™ X210 kit, and it seems like it cannot report battery current in Linux (0 via ACPI where X230 reported correct values) and neither report nor control the fan speed. The former makes me unable to optimize my battery life, and the latter results in the CPU frequenc...

Re: Upgrading X220/X230 to FHD 1080p

VBL20 is responsible for the backlight power. Given that you bridged F1, either your solder bridge is blown or the copper track is blown somewhere on the motherboard. Two things to keep in mind: 1. Do not bridge fuses I've bridged F1 on the mod board and desoldered AUX power as you've suggested ear...

Check if BACKLIGHT_ON, PANEL_BKLT_CTRL and VBL20 are present on the LCD connector.
VBL20 is zero, was too frightened to try touching the others due to their size.

Are you sure it's not a soldering issue? eDP cables failures are extremely rare unless you intentionally abuse them.
Yeah, you're right: after poking the PTHs thoroughly with a soldering iron it works flawlessly. Thanks a lot for the suggestion!
