Re: mSATA in X220/X230

Very much agreed. We have a client that installed some "cheap" TLC SSDs into older 1st gen i/C2D desktops some 3-4 years ago in order to extend their lifespan, and they are failing left and right all of a sudden with little/no warning lately. Thank goodness for folder redirection! :) I personally ke...

Re: Slow suspend wake-up on T420

How is it suspending? Is it going to S2/S3 (suspend to RAM) or S4 (suspend to disk/hibernate)? S4 will take longer to resume from (esp. if you add RAM) because of the need to access the disk.

And I love this tlp-stat command :) So useful! I also love tlp recalibrate BAT0 That's something for Windows users to be envious of here :-D They only can do it via BIOS we, Linux people, can recalibrate our batts from command line :-P Actually, recalibrating can be done in Lenovo Power Manager and...

Re: Battery life on T420

I can't say exactly how on Linux, but there should be a way to check the Watt-hour capacity and discharge rate of the battery. 6 cell or 9 cell?

You should be seeing 3-5 hours on a 6 cell and 4-7 hours on a 9 cell, for light-moderate use.

Not sure about with the laptops, but with desktops, they won't recognize anything connected to the PS/2 port unless it's connected before the system is powered on. Is it still not showing up even when you have it plugged in before booting? Many ThinkPads do indeed have a small plastic ... thing.... ...

Re: mSATA in X220/X230

Why not? It allows use of more than one storage disk. Having distributed filesystems on separate buses increases overall R/W throughput compared to having it all go to a single disk.

Re: "Acceptable" CPU Temps?

I don't know if I've seen good data for this (to be fair, I haven't spent a ton of time looking ) but the lower the better is always a good place to start. It's hard to give a hard number that spans CPU generations because each has its own set of quirks. Higher clock speeds at full power always...

Re: Blu-ray reader or burner for T60 / T61 series

I'm inclined to agree. By the time Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) came to the scene, T60 was the new mainstream and the T61 was just on the horizon. The format(s) didn't really gain traction until the T61 was nearing the end of its service life, and by then the industry as a whole was switching fast to SATA f...

With undervolting, CPU clock and fan speed management you should be able to keep the heat down sufficiently to let it run well enough with whichever CPU you use, assuming no prolonged torture sessions! You'll need to decide if you need higher single-threaded performance, or a slight boost in overall...

Re: Serial Ultrabyay Slim or Enhanced Blu Ray drive for T500, T530, or W530

I got both of mine from China. It takes a while to arrive but they work. The T410 and T400 both use the Serial Ultrabay Slim, but the T420 and T430 have Serial Ultrabay Enhanced which is a bit thicker. You can put the Slim drives in the Enhanced bay, but not vice-versa. There will be a gap under the...

It's not impossible but it's not likely, unless you happened to/went out of your way to get a motherboard that uses the G3 mobile CPU socket that the T440p Haswell mobile CPUs use.

I had a T60 that did something that sounds like this. Eventually replaced the motherboard. Never did figure out what the cause was - in BIOS the clock was not moving.

Yes, it is the same 16V charger used by most IBM era ThinkPads. A few years back some folks claimed to have NOS batteries for sale, but they were pricey. I am not sure if there are any out there anymore. I'm sure someone here would have something though. I would be surprised if XP didn't work fairly...

In your config.sys, it is written so that the name for the USBCD driver once loaded is USBCD001. You will need to update that in autoexec.bat (or, based on what you posted, it may be loaded in driver.bat) to be the same, or you could change it in config.sys to be IBMCD001 which is what the name of t...

Re: T450s - web surfing and high chassis temperature

Always a good thing to do every so often! Chances are your T450s has a dual core, HT CPU with 4 threads. If that is indeed the case, any application that is using close to 25% CPU (or more, if it was developed with SMP capabilities) will certainly cause the machine to heat up. Otherwise just look at...

That's the Windows account password.

Ask the previous owner if they have the password that they can give you, or if they can log in to remove it. Otherwise you'll need to re-image or re-install the operating system from scratch. Discussing password bypassing or hacking on the forum is prohibited.

Re: Thinkpad Battery "Whitelist" ... how does it work?

I don't have much technical expertise to contribute, but I do know that this is related to the EDID chip on the battery. It's software embedded on the battery control chip - probably some kind of challenge/response from the system BIOS to authenticate the battery. Possibly similar to how OEM Windows...

Yes, it's possible. What browser and OS are you using? I have found that Google Chrome likes to start up several instances of something called "SoftwareReporterTool" which hogs up 100% of one or more CPU cores. Depending on website content it can also be very CPU hungry. I would load up task manager...
