Re: Buying a W520 in 2019?

Duh. I've been working with too many T420s lately. :) Worth mentioning is the fact that the mSATA slot is limited to SATA-II speed, whereas the Ultrabay and 2.5" SATA bay are SATA-III. I have never really noticed any negative side effects of on any of my *20 series machines, but it is a technical li...

Re: Buying a W520 in 2019?

All of the W520s will have a Quadro and the iGPU. The lower end models will have the Quadro 1000M, the higher end ones will have the Quadro 2000M, which is about 35% faster than the 1000M. You can also install an mSATA SSD and keep the 2.5" HDD and ODD. There is a slot for one (or a WWAN module if s...

Re: Buying a W520 in 2019?

I love my W520. I don't notice any sluggishness or lagging doing day-to-day computing. I also use it to encode Blu-rays on occasion. Make sure you get a quad-core model and upgrade it to 8GB+ RAM and an SSD and you'll be good to go. Also - Ivy Bridge is not significantly faster clock-for-clock compa...

First thing I'd do is check task manager to see if there are any lingering processes using one of the cores heavily. If there is you can terminate it and see what happens to the temps without rebooting.

Re: How to store 'new' batteries?

Keep them cool, above all else. 70F/20C or so is fair - don't let them freeze, and I'd think putting them in a refrigerator is a little extreme... although a cool basement or cellar (50-60F/10-15C) would be most practically ideal. If the voltage in the cells drops too low they can't be safely rechar...

Re: Shorted out x220 mainboard. Repairable?

Depending on how it/what shorted out, it's possible. You'd need to test each fuse individually and replace any that are blown. If none of the fuses are blown then it's not likely to be repairable. I had to replace the LCD/backlight fuses a couple times on my W520 during the process of fitting the IP...

I got mine used off eBay. They are hard to find, for sure, and I paid $50 for it.

I had to set up a saved search using the 40Y8122 and 40Y8124 part numbers. After a few weeks (or maybe it was months?) one popped up and I snagged it.

Probably not related, but I figured I'll mention this anyway... My T60 (now my T601F) would randomly freeze up shortly after I received it a few years ago. As it turned out, there is a problem with the trackpad - I disconnected it and it no longer freezes up (merely turning it off in BIOS was not en...

Re: Browser not loading many websites with Windows 95 installed.

What you're running into is the fact that the web has evolved well beyond the capabilities of IE5.5. The simplest explanation is probably that few modern web servers will accept the outdated security protocols IE5.5 supports (e.g. SSL 2.0), and simply terminate the connection when no cipher handshak...

No external displays, Optimus enabled. I have modded an FHD IPS panel in mine.

Re: This T61, need some opinions...?

If the price is right I might be interested in acquiring it. I have a quad core CPU and was going to try a quad mod to see how it performed compared to the T9900 I have in my T601F now, but didn't want to have downtime on it in case something got messed up.

Re: W520 CPU cooling swap

Basic tests I would run include using the various heat sinks, then pulling up TPFanControl and setting fan 64 (max fixed) and monitor temperature of CPU and GPU and running furmark to load the GPU, and Prime95 to load the CPU. Then use CPU-Z to monitor CPU clock speed after temperatures stabilize. O...

Nice find! I abused loved my T61p since I received it new in October of 2007, until I officially retired it in favor of the W520 I have in my sig. in early 2015. Re: FS: A handful of T400s in various conditions

I am. Shipping internationally is not out of the question but can be cost prohibitive, I'd say. Usually $40-$50 to ship overseas (although I can fit two into one box, if I omit the AC adapters, which makes it slightly less horrific), compared to the $12-$13 it is to ship domestically. Well, it's by no means brand new... it's just well cared for. The fact that there is hinge play speaks that it was used regularly for a time, possibly with a docking station and an external mouse and keyboard - which would explain the lack of wear. I remember when my T61p was brand new, the hinges w...
