Re: Fundamental differences between T420 and T430?

Aside from [slightly] higher clock speeds, the Ivy Bridge CPUs aren't much faster clock-for-clock than Sandy Bridge CPUs. They aren't particularly more power-efficient, or heat-efficient, either. Most benchmarks show 3-5% improvement over Sandy Bridge. There is definitely an improvement, but it's no...

Quite impressive! Very evident the tremendous amount of ingenuity and work that you put into it.

Out of curiosity, why the 727-200?

Heh... I stopped using Chrome (except for certain, very infrequent tasks for work which virtually require the platform) a number of years ago. With all the latest buzz about it I see I wasn't wrong to!

Re: Install a 1066MHz FSB CPU on T61 (including Core 2 Quad)

I've got my T601F which I've already 1066 modded and I've been running a T9900. I got a reasonable deal on a Q9100 and am contemplating whether to install it in that machine or mod another T61 for it. I do a fair bit of work on battery and don't want to run into a scenario where it won't be stable o...

Re: Windows 7 on T25 - any "real life" experiences ?

I successfully modified the Windows 7 installer to load, recognize USB 3.0 devices as well as the NVMe SSD. I did not go beyond letting the installer see the various W10 partitions of the factory preload. Here's what worked - fairly simple, actually... You need a Windows 7 Pro x64 ISO (I used one wi...

Re: Windows 7 on T25 - any "real life" experiences ?

I may be out of my mind... but I think I'm actually going to give it a shot. If I can get the installer to recognize the HDD then I'll consider it a "success" - but I don't have any intentions to wipe my T25 to see about other Win7 drivers [yet]. I'll report back after a while.

From what I can tell, at least one person here has tried. But it didn't appear to work... quote from the relevant thread is below. Re: Surprise addition to collection: A21m *PICS*

I'll always have a soft spot for the A2* systems. First computer I bought and paid for on my own was an off-lease A22m back in 2004 while I was still in high school. The LCD backlight went bad on it after about a year; I have strangely fond memories of hooking it up to a TV using the S-video port an...

Shipping cost to 44039? I'm assuming by "ready for core 2 quad" that you've done the SPD reflash on the RAM already, correct?

Is the CPU an ES (engineering sample) chip?

Preferred method of payment?

The software I use for my web server is old and finicky; I actually just rebooted my machine that hosts it this morning (because I was having issues RDP'ing into it) and that probably fixed it. :)

I'm not sure why you would need to flash the Middleton BIOS to run 64 bit Linux. In any case, flashing Middleton's BIOS won't do anything to your hard disk or existing OS/partitions.

I fitted a T420 I bought about 3.5 years ago with the nVidia NVS 4200m, upgraded it with 8GB RAM, the i7 2640m, a 256GB MSATA SSD (kept the 500 GB HDD for storage) and also put in an IPS FHD kit when the T420 non-s kits were being sold. 9/10 (or better) condition... Re: Why do people keep going back to Thinkpad?

Trackpoint, keyboard, the ease of upgrading/accessing commonly upgraded/replaced components (e.g. HDD/RAM). The no frills styling is a plus to me as well. Honestly though my first laptop some 20 years ago was a ThinkPad (I bought it because the price was fair for the hardware specs, and I gravitated...

Re: a long-lived T61 ?

Good input in this thread. The T61 is a fine machine, with a few quirks like any other model, but still worth the time investment to keep running. I "frankenpadded" a secondhand T60 with the T61 motherboard and use it daily as my workhorse on the job. Is it a little long in the tooth? Sure. But is i...

Re: need X60 Recovery cd-please !

I am not sure. If I had to guess it's probably SP2 since the X61 was released about a year before SP3 was published. The PE image on disc 1 is dated 2009 but the software contents on the other discs are all dated 2006 or 2007, so it seems consistent that it'd be SP2.

Those include defragmentation and the indexing service for searches, and making sure partitions are "aligned" to ...

Re: Why so few T550 for sale?

The 50 series was short-lived due to the abbreviated Broadwell cycle which was something Intel set. There were delays with the shrink to 14nm for Broadwell after Haswell and instead of delaying Sky Lake, they shortened Broadwell's life cycle. As a result 50 series machines didn't start shipping unti...

Thanks for the photos and insights into the 6 cell removable battery. I had been considering getting one but haven't pulled the trigger yet; I don't use the system as much as I could, probably because I've not yet developed much of a fondness for Windows 10 yet.

Re: Any tips on protecting battery usage when plugged in 99% of the time?

Dr_st pretty much sums it up. Depending on who you talk to, everyone will give a different opinion. The facts are that Li-ion batteries degrade over time much less when they aren't stored at a full charge and are kept cool. Higher temperatures is more degrading than higher charge levels. There was a...

Re: Why does FedEx needs 168.00 CDN to ship a 0.3Kg 2" thick and 16" long?

I shipped something via FedEx once, and only once. Their up-front rate was slightly better than the others for my package (it was shipped domestically), maybe a dollar or two less than USPS or UPS. A week or so after delivery, they hit my account with a "fuel surcharge" that cost almost as much as t...

That I can't say, as I don't own either model I haven't done nearly as much research about this issue on them. But I can't say it's not possible. I'd say it's more likely on the A30 than the T30 because the T30 uses the Pentium 4, whereas all the 20 series and the A30 used one of the Pentium III fla...

Re: A21 Turns on then off inmediatly

If all else fails, something to keep in mind is many of the 20 series (A2x, T2x, X2x and TransNote) have a fairly well known motherboard design flaw around the implementation of the power circuit. There isn't a fix that I know of, aside from a known working motherboard. Some have suggested the sourc...
